Yes. While I have no idea where the pantyhose idea to test sharp fret ends actually originated from, for sure Phil McKnight is to be given credit for bringing the idea to a larger audience - he has been doing that exact test for years now in his videos and AFAIK he is the only guitar youtuber who uses this concept. Gotta give props to Phil...

People do not realize how much work (if done by hand, even MORE work) a neck requires to make correctly. The truss rod routing, insertion and capping alone is tedious work, if it is a different wood fretboard, that fretboard needs HOURS of work to cut, radius, sand, glue, drill - repeat several times, before it is ready to even begin putting frets on. When I buy a neck and it has perfect fret work, I.E. no sharp edges, no hanging frets, no frets cut short, and no high frets...I count that as HUGE win. If I have to do a little sanding, filing, gluing, refinishing work to it and it has perfect frets....I really do not mind the extra work I have to do.
@TheGuitologist

Same here. And when you do the work yourself it’s YOU who controls the level of quality.

I've scratch built a dozen or so necks from curly maple or flamed tiger maple for les Paul builds and it is almost 1/2 the build of the entire guitar. mahogany is easier but it still takes a lot of work. Fret boards can take hours of work even if they are prebuilt.Very nice work Brad

Nice job Brad. BTW I finished the Larrivee. (Yes knuckles are bruised battered & scarred) It was 3/4 size. Any way after 2 weeks of humidification all cracks closed except the biggest. So I CA glued the living sh*t out of it, & the other cracks. Sealed all the open wood, etc. The owner was thrilled. Now they're talking about a 70s Gibson acoustic that used as a bludgeon during a family row. I said I'll try. Great idea on the Blend pot. Never thought of it. (After a year & half of US Navy Electrical Electronics training you'd think I'd remember that crap). Any way your boy is impressed.

Don't download the app. The app is not just asking for the right to access your camera, contacts and Wi-Fi network. TEMU also wants the rights to unlock your phone at night without you being there and the right to be able to record audio. You also give TEMU permission to install software on your phone, read your messages and the app can take screenshots.

I couldn't agree more. Temu is such a fraud. I really wish that Canada would police sites like this from China. I was ripped off by Temu for 3 items that were stamped and advertised as solid silver, but i received Silver plated instead. I also asked for a refund for a silver ring that started turning a copper color just after about a week of wearing it. Instead of the full refund i received less than a third of the price i originally paid. I got 6 dollars!!! Please stop supporting these sham companies.

Great video. The "strat" is the most basic form factor of electric guitar in the world. Leo Fender designed it to be modular. I've thrown together many dirt cheap but high quality strat builds in 40 years of guitar slinging. Strats are my thing. I don't care who makes it if the quality and price are right. But when they are not, I do my own build. I laugh my ass off at those who waste money on the Fender "Custom Shop." What a rip! There are also plenty of great aftermarket parts for great prices. For pickups you don't have to settle for Duncan, DiMarzio, EMG, or spend even more on Lollar, Fralin, and some of the other "boutique" brands. I've found good pickups for ten dollars or less.

Temu has some great deals (except for the clothing) to be sure and I use them a lot. However, for around $200.00 or less you can get a Fire Fly guitar with locking tuners, bone nut, roasted maple neck, roasted ash or mahogany body, 2 alnico five pups and one Hum-bucker in the bridge and stainless steel frets. These are quality guitars that rival Fender made guitars. My 2 Stratocasters cost me $169.00 for a relic and $179.00 for a solid white guitar plus shipping. Just my 2 cents worth. Peace.

Neat. I would like to see how TEMU parts hold up to months or years of settling down, as far as the neck remaining stable etc. Of course, any unfinished or oiled raw maple neck should be expected to shrink a bit. Bill Nash actually says it's a feature that his guitars lose moisture in the first few years. Fret sprout is inevitable.

One thing to keep in mind when thinking about the extra work needed with the frets- more and more frequently these days even a brand new instrument from a big name company needs some fretwork and setup. Fret ends rounded, nut slotted down to an appropriate height (most are way too high), truss rod adjustment, bridge height and intonation adjusted. Seriously, I have seen many of these issues with guitars in the couple thousand dollar range.

Log pots are different... I've used them for volumes for a while and linear pots for tones... might have to swap them around or do 1 type in my next build

I use linear only for everything... I cannot stand that "all the sudden" BS, for tone there is zero control you cannot mix or blend at all . . also you can make that no load by putting glue over the carbon, then it can be removed if you want and you can make it more precise using the proper applicator, bring the glue down over the edge so if one day you want to reverse you just grab the glue hanging over and peel it off, clear nail polish works well, let it dry to desired consistency, drip over edge so it will peel off... nice budget strat build Brad . . . . . .

The glue trick might work. Id only worry about it getting caught on the wiper and messing that up.

One of the biggest issues with Strat type guitars is the synchronised tremolo system, keeping it balanced over time and in tune, I used to think the issue with friction was worse at the neck nut, but there's a much steeper break angle at the bridge so I mean all friction points are important to get on top of reducing or if you can completely get rid of any friction without compromising tone, before I discovered the locking saddle blocks for a standard strat bridge with just one additional upgrade a pand head Allen screw flat and wide to lock the strings to the blocks individually, and of corse if you don't want to for out over the acceptable price range for such a small but clever design, roller blocks do really work well if they're high enough quality rollers, apart fromall that any thing made from high density ptfe works well without too much of a tone loss in fact if you like your pups high and loud a softer than brass bridge saddle block like ptfe or a ptfe nut at the headstock will help reduce those shrilling highs.

Precisely why I prefer hard tails. I wish Fender would make more of them. I also hate the volume knob location. Too close to my picking hand. If they could do away with one of the tone knobs and use the bottom locations for one volume and one tone that would be cool.

The good thing about a Strat is, if you don’t like the volume knob location, and you prefer two knobs instead of three… You can swap the pickguard. You don’t need Fender to change the design, you just need to not be lazy. If you don’t like the bridge floating, slam it. If you don’t like the tremolo system at all, convert it to a hard tail… All this talk about ptfe vs x, it’s snake oil. The thing’s that have the most dramatic effect tone is the pickups, the amp, and the speaker. The speaker being the biggest change. If you genuinely believe you hear an immeasurable difference between materials, you’re lying to yourself. Shout out to Jim Lill for debunking these stupid myths.

@@TheFakeNewsFrog Granted, it doesn't make that much difference compared to the guitar speaker, but there was a slight difference in highs in Jim Lill's neck vs string to two bench clips. I really admire the guy for his efforts. His speaker cab and mock tube amp sound videos were real eye openers. His clips aren't really long enough to hear how a note degrades, though. Bridge hardware makes a substantial tonal difference. FI, my b4 and after recordings after swapping a stock pot metal TOM bridge to an Aluminum one with Ti saddles are pretty different. What makes you think plastic saddles would damp string vibrations the same as a hard metal? Softer saddles absorb more highs. Another example: every comparison, including my own, of an Alder vs Swamp Ash body guitar reveal a difference in midrange character, and possibly bass. The Alder is more mid-forward, and the SA has stronger lower bass (which could be from how less midrange affects bass into a gain stage). Those differences become more apparent when you quickly A/B between two clips and focus on one portion of the tonal spectrum. I don't see why guitar players are so dead set that different pieces of wood make no significant difference when there are numerous examples showing otherwise? I guess your avatar is a hint. Doesn't evidence matter?

@@mattbauckman9907 regarding the volume knob location, I had the same dislike for the same reason on a jap 57 reissue strat I had in the 80's/90's, I had the all tones connected to the bottom tone knob and the volume placed in the middle tone knob location, fixed the issue. I've been thinking whether it is worth doing on my std 1996 strat that I have now but I don't play out anymore so couldn't be bothered yet.
