Ohio farm families invite you on a tour of their pig farm! You may not be close enough to a farm for a school field trip, but we invite you to take a virtual look around these farms. See how these farmers take care of their pigs.
Check out the momma pigs, baby pigs and growing pigs. See what pigs eat and drink. See how pigs live on today's farms, and hear how farms have changed over time.
We invite you to take a look at these two Ohio farms which are very similar to many others around the state.
Also check out the Frequently Asked Questions page on OhioPork.org to ask more questions about pigs, pork and farming.

did you know that piglets learn their name by 2-3 weeks of age and they respond to being called? they rank as the #4 most intelligent animal. (behind chimps, elephants, and dolphins) did you also know that pigs like to snuggle together when they sleep? and that they have a more sophisticated cognitive ability than dogs or 3 year old human children? they can even play video games. :) they are clean animals and will not soil where they sleep or eat if they are given enough space. they are capable of feeling pain and love. in the US, 112 million of them are killed each year for food. they deserve better.

Nice video girls. I am not sure why people hate the way pigs are raised. We give them shelter food and care when they are sick. Hog farmers want their hogs healthy and happy as long as they are with us. Every hog that dies before slaughter only takes money out of the farmers pocket. You do not get rich raising hogs. Of course, there is times of good prices and other times not much money is made from them. You city folks or ones that know no better most farmers do what they can to keep their hogs healthy and happy. Farming is not a nine to five job, No holidays every day they need to be cared for. Would you work for your job this way?

Pigs in those barns look happy and comfortable, but I wonder why pigs are grown so quickly. Are they given any growth hormone?
@themarineman_8779
@themarineman_8779 7 лет назад
MrEjidorie no. They get given a lot of food. Once they get about a year they stop growing. It's basically like any other living thing. Even trees.

There are no steroid hormones approved for swine. I work in the pork industry, pigs are not given any hormones. Great question. Why do pigs grow quickly? 270 lbs. in 7 months, because of great well balance feed, sound barn management (managing temperature), great vet care, and genetics. I hope that helps, thanks for asking.
@MrEjidorie

+Daniel Gowanlock Thank you for your reply. I`m going to relay your message to my wife because she is very nervous about the safety of imported pork and and quite reluctant to feed pork to our fourteen years old son at a growing stage right now. Your information convinces us that my son will not grow to 270 lbs in 7 months.

Daniel Gowanlock I was just gonna comment this, we had Payleen here in Canada and we were the only farm in our area that didn't use it and we had the highest production rates of all

The floors are slated, so the manure falls into a pit. The pits on my farm are around 14 feet deep. We haul the manure in large tanks into out fields twice a year and "inject" it into the ground.

ole Laupsa The pig farms of today are nicer than some homes in the poorest parts of the United States and foreign countries. Unfortionatly you know this is true.Why worry about the pork industry and what happens to pigs and you do not care about the people in the world. If we did not consume pork or beef where would you put them all . this is a never ending cycle Most of the normal people like to eat meat the body requires meat to do hard physical labor .you know nothing about the pork industry .the pigs are care for better than some children and the elderly .You will never stop the livestock and dairy industry .It is needed in this world The American Farmer feeds the world now more than ever.It is sad that the people of the U.S. are so miss informed about the number one industry of the United States.

perry spradlin pigs are not made to be inside and tortured and if all livestock animals was released in to the wild it's more space to homes to dose people
@perryspradlin9356
@perryspradlin9356 6 лет назад
ole Laupsa DO you kow what would happen if pigs wear turned loose they turn wild and kill your pets and you kids possibly . wild hogs are a major problem in the southern states they destory crops pastures and will kill dog and cats .Kown to attack humans .Now how do you know that pigs or any livestock are torture. Any thing that is torture will not grow to 280 pounds in 6 or 7 months. If a pig is in any form of stress it will not grow no livestock will .it has to be warm and dry and have clean drinking water and plenty of feed this has to happen this is the way the farmer makes his liveing if they raise live stock . This is a problem to much misinformation . NOT ALL LIVESTOCK PRODUCERS A CRUEL. IF YOU DO NOT LIKE WHAT YOU SEE TURN OFF WHAT YOU ARE WATCHING . you are not going to stop people from eating meat it is a muitly million if not billion dollar business. THE pigs are raised inside to protect them from sickness .
@thejack9178
@thejack9178 6 лет назад
perry spradlin have you seen a pig outside animals are not made to be inside I just want animals to tenured to the wild. No farm animal cen have a good life inside if you can't see that is it something rong with you.
@perryspradlin9356
@perryspradlin9356 6 лет назад
ole Laupsa Yes i have saw pig raised out side .I used to raise pig when i farmed . NOTHING WRONG WITH ME .It is just easey to raise hogs inside .you keep them fed and watered and they do fine. Yes people still raise pig out side it take longer to take them to market weight witch is now 280 pounds . when i farmed the market weight was 240 pounds. it is easer to put them in side and use the ground to raise corn ,soybeans or wheat .The farmer do not due this to be cruel . the farmer has to due this to make a little profit you do not make much money farming.just because you see a new combine or new tractor or a new steel building more than likely it is all paid for . farming takes alot of money more than most nonfarm people want to think about farming is not 9 am to 5 pm job with live stock yourr on call 24/7 365 it is a way of life and a good life a lot of hard work.

Everyone who thinks this is wrong and that we should all go vegan , if we stopped eating meat and started eating plants we would take away the food from the herbivores and that would cause them to die which would leave the carnivores with no food. this would ruin the food cycle

This is a much nicer farm than the full confinement ones. At least they have some community pens. But even jail prisoners get a hour outside every day. Raise your own as I do, and feed them real food, not soybean meal and distillers grains. They make soft pork - not like what we have been eating for the past 8 or 10 thousand years. Franken food, but I am not knocking the farmer, America is cheap and lazy and so this is the result.
