Actor David Farrar plays the role of an RAF pilot advising some unhappy locals in a British country pub in this 1943 public relations film. They had tried - and failed - to rescue a downed pilot unconscious in his wrecked Spitfire.
Farrar explains how to trigger the cockpit latches and access doors on a varieth of combat planes - including an early model Hawker Typhoon and Bristol Beaufighter.
At the end, Farrar says that he doesn't mind trying to give some pointers and advice - the pilot somebody saves may be him!

Thank you Armoured Archivist for these wonderful old “instructional “ films. I think that some people here have no idea of what they are mocking and zero respect for what went on before , what was endured and the sacrifices made .

Oh-no, we didn’t get to turret-fighters before the landlady chucked us out! 🙀

"Is there anything else you can possibly tell us that might help us save lives in the future?" "Well yes, actually..." "TOO BAD, GET THE ELL OUT!"

Imagine trying to remember all these instructions if the time came. (I love the bit when the three people stop and listen to strange noises. Oh father!)

It really just boils down to "Break the window (preferably without killing the pilot), find a red lever in the canopy or door and pull it, release the seat belt and dinghy, lift guy out". Having a more consistent design between planes would have been a good idea, of course.

In the context of the time and of the events, the need to inform yet not disclose any information that might aid the enemy, these old films are outstanding in every respect. Some of the comments are insulting

I’m afraid I initially mistook the struggling Spit for father’s problem - an almost musical complaint brought on by those dashed cigarettes.

I think i was shown this at RAF St Athens in the early 70`s ...as we were learning how to load bombs onto a lancaster bomb rack ...3 weeks later working on Phantoms !!!!!!

Wow, that's crazy. Although thinking back. As late as the early to almost mid-Eighties, I served with an old Chief Electricans Mate from WWII. We were on an DC-9 in Europe one time, and I go, " I hope this fn' crate don't crash." He looked at me like I was some sort of mental case, lol. Great guy, funny, and was in attendace at his retirement at 65 years of age.

The sound effects are comical as are the visuals of the plane. All done on a budget in wartime I guess

Invasion stripes on the Typhoon, check the date. I just realized they are not invasion stripes and the canopy is an early model. My bad!
