This video demonstrates steps for turning a common flat file into an attractive hunting knife. I recommend at the start of the video to watch this safety video before attempting this project:

I did not temper my knife in my procedure thinking the file was already appropriate for a knife, I have found out from comments that this is not the case.

I would never make a knife from a file but I found the video very interesting because I learned some new things about working with metal. I'm a woodworker but sometimes it's handy to be able to incorporate metal into a project so thanks for sharing George. Your knife turned out beautiful!

NEVER use any oil on a diamond stone, they require zero fluid. Having said that you can use a non water based lubricant like Windex or similar but certainly not oil.

Thanks for the words of wisdom, they sound much like what I might have said to you years ago. I watched your video, "Knife Making - DIY SUPER Simple Bushcraft Knife". I don't know if I was more impressed with the knife-making or the video production. Your camera angles and editing were "spot on". I also loved the metal jig you made for holding your knife while grinding. I wish I could take a class from you and go full circle on the student/teacher cycle. I looked hard but I still couldn't recognize you, I am sure you've changed since the 8th grade!
