A fledgling Red-bellied Woodpecker is quite shy, tries to get to the food plate while I'm close by!
One of the first birds that came down from the trees to eat bird food we put out was a male Red-bellied Woodpecker. Ever since, we have seen them raise a couple of young each year. The last two years it seems we have more than ever with an adult male recently feeding a fledgling male and an adult female simultaneously feeding a young fledgling female. we also have a couple of juveniles that were likely fledged a few months ago, in late Spring. they are fun to watch, as Daddy Red-bellied will chase his son from tree to tree and then make him follow him to the food sources.
