I used to have the 2002 Trix version in maroon with the metal German eagle plates which has the same tooling and made in Germany. The main tooling actually dates back to the late 1980s. They did make a later plastic bodied version for a while which was made in China but went back to the old tooling with updates. I use Trix -C track which has live frogs but it's clear this model pickups are marginal and it doesn't need 2 sets of traction tyres!

What I find with Marklin and trix is that there older models, not the new tools, tend to have this problem. I have majority new tool models and lots of unpowered switches with no problems. After checking their pick ups… there definitely seems to have been more thought. This model seems to be relatively older in tooling and mechanism so they most likely just kept updating it and the pick ups most likely are just an old design. You mention the roots of Marklin being strong and you are right as this model is not a retool, it’s just an updated tool

Good video. Here's another mystery, the exploded parts diagram for Trix 22451 on their website shows it fitted with a modern can motor with flywheel and 2 axles fitted with traction tyres. So does the instruction manual?
