The rainbow trout, originally native to the Pacific rim stretching from Mexico to Kamchatka, Russia, is the number one cultured trout globally and is now found on every continent bar Antarctica.
In 2011 Anders Halverson, an award winning journalist, fisherman and aquatic ecologist wrote a book entitled 'An Entirely Synthetic Fish'. The book detailed how in an attempt to establish Pacific salmon runs in the Atlantic states to replace the Atlantic salmon runs that had largely disappeard due to environmental degradation, rainbow trout inadvertently became the primary salmonid of America's burgeoning fish hatchery culture.
This video is based upon that book.

Because of the introduction of other species of Trout in the McLoud the original Red Band McLoud Rainbow are found in only one river in the world today. It was introduced in 1881 in a small spring creek in Missouri (that will go unmentioned) and to this day are believed to be the only pure strain of RBMR’s left in the world. They are beautiful hardy fish with a bright red band on their side. Somehow God has found a way to protect them with wise men managing and conserving their habitat since 1881.

Wow, the interesting to read. I can imagine that they're gorgeous fish. We have a couple of wild populations here in the UK and they're stunning.
