Maine had a real banger of a flag back in 1901. The "Lone Pine" flag was a beauty but only lasted less than a decade before being replaced by a boring seal on a bedsheet flag that it has today. However, the 1901 flag has had a resurgence of popularity and could possibly come back for good in 2024. I traveled to Maine to visit with the man who has been trying to bring this flag back into vogue since before I was born...and of course, to explore the beautiful Pine Tree State.

I wish I was a Mainer so I could help vote next year. Hopefully most residents of the state will have the good sense to vote back the 1901 flag. The fact they changed it in the first place to what it is know is just honestly dumb.

I had the opportunity of doing an interview with you on this subject in the State Capitol park. Even though it did not make the cut for this video, I still enjoyed it. 😛 I still have my Flags For Good pin you gave me that day, hanging in my cubical at work.

Your opening shot is Nubble Light on Cape Neddick. I've been there a million times over the last 5 decades. It's iconic and amazing.

I’d love to see the Old Maine flag become the new state flag! It’s simple but very unique

Love the video! When are you guys going to redesign the New Jersey state flag? I'm very interested to see what you guys come up with!

It's a hard one for sure! Never found a good starting point yet.

I designed one a very long time ago, it was a tricolor of Buff, White, and Jersey Blue with a green star in the middle. It’s based off of the states Tri-Centennial flag

Hopefully our fellow New Englanders in Maine will have their state officially recognize the flag design which has already been overwhelmingly adopted by the public. Whether it is the minimalistic tree or the one with the brown trunk and roots, either are superior to the SOB the state officially recognizes currently.

I love your videos! Thanks for everything you're doing. 🧡 I assume you've looked through the thousands of entries for the new Minnesota flag! (My home state.) Oh, I just found out there are 6 finalists. I'm disappointed that the existing alternate flag isn't among them. What do you think?

I hope Maine doesn’t decide to go with the modern corporat-ization of their old state flag, and instead revived the one with the beautifully intricate pine tree

While I do like the idea of people and entities being free to create their own version of a flag or emblem, I also think that there should one official version that all official representatives (in this case the State of Maine) should be required to stick to as part of the visual identity of a place or entity.

There would be one official design that the state uses, but like most things, it’s not ILLEGAL to riff off of it or make variations.

I think I read somewhere that one of the designs currently being considered for Massachusetts' new flag (or was that Vermont?) also features a simple stylized fir tree. Maybe the fir tree is a traditional symbol New England. 🌲💚 I do love green, especially light green. Such a "friendly" and positive colour.

Yes it is! Massachusetts ensign is a long pine on white. The New England flag has just a pine in the canton on a red flag. Definitely a symbol for the region and they all have intertwined colonial pasts as well.

The trees represent the "King's Pines" - back in colonial days only best trees (White Pines) would be selected for making the masts for the naval ships. Representatives of the Crown would mark these trees, meaning they were off limits to the Colonists. Needless to say, as the colonies started to fall into open rebellion, the trees became a symbol much like the tea from the Boston Tea Party or the Liberty Bell. Which is why almost all the New England states have a variant of the White Pine on their old flags. It was a sign of rebellion against the King.

As a FWIW, the state is getting new license plates starting soonish, and its based off of this flag.

The way this flag works is exactly like how a blazon works in heraldry. I absolutely prefer it to standardised flag designs, it's one of the reasons I think that modern flag design trends have become so boring and corporate.

The links between heraldry and vexillology are definitely strong.
