Today I am in Stonehaven in Scotland's north east. It might be November, but I'm still up for the odd overnighter in the van! Parking down by the harbour in a free spot with no signs to discourage me, it turned out to be the perfect place - quiet, toilet block nearby, the sound of the sea, a great little coffee shop, and a short walk to a spectacular castle. What more could I need? Well how's about something deep fried...

Hi, I’m Steve. I am a travel reviewer and post my trip reports here on RU-vid. I pay for my own travel and produce my own videos. If you have any questions about my journeys or travel advice in general, please drop me a comment - I do my best to respond to every single one. I’d also love to hear any recommendations you may have for future content, or why not challenge me to try something a little out of the ordinary! If you are looking to collaborate on any type of project, I’d love to hear from you - email me your ideas and hopefully we can work together in the future.

Hello from Canada! What a beautiful video! I wish I could go there again. My great-grandparents lived in Stonehaven, Boatie Row. I met them in 1967 when I was only 5. They were very old and that was the only time I would meet them. As I recall, a sketchy family history, says that my great-grandfather and his son were associated with the Cutty Sark. But, what do I know???? I have loved Scotland for my entire life.

After recently discovering your channel and seeing you travel all over the world you inspired us to book a holiday to… Montrose! Just seemed like a nice place a great location to get to all the things we wanted to do. Then today I heard about the outdoor pool in Stonehaven and suggested it to my girlfriend as she’s a keen swimmer. She likes the sound of it but what will I do while she swims? (I can’t swim). Then this evening while I’m working my way through your older videos I find this one and see that there’s an awesome castle I can wander over to while she’s in the pool. Perfect!

Deep-fried Mars bars sound like the main line to Coronary City! Though as a true Scotsman you're bound to try one. Square sausage and Haggis (which is quite close to Polish Kaszanka) are the outer limits of my Scottish culinary explorations! Stonehaven looks like a fascinating place to visit, especially if you can park up for the night so close to the waterside. I'm really enjoying your Scottish trip reports while destinations further afield are unreachable. Neat van conversion video too.

Damn every time you show a place in Scotland, makes me want to go to my closed travel agent & book a flight to a place I can’t go. My father was a fighter pilot in 1944. He use to fly (training) in Scotland. He loved the flying side . What used to bring a grin to his face was St Andrews Golf Course. He & a couple of others buzzed it one day, he said golfers were going everywhere. Just made him smile. He just loved the country though which I have inherited. You can keep tourist traps. A walk down the Royal mile is my definition of being a tourist . I love your blogs Steve. Parts of London are special to me too particularly St James Park. Oh yes Red Headed Women, I was in heaven in Scotland. My dad married one from London ( my Mum obviously ). The town in the film “Local Hero” wasnt that on the East Coast. I live in a beautiful place too. A friend went on a week holiday on what we call the Surf Coast in Victoria , it’s cold water here comes up from the Southern Ocean, but has some of the most amazing surf beaches anywhere. We have no virus here 0 cases for basically 4 months.Beautiful country lots of Bush.but lacks the history of Scotland.

Without going through your video library, I recall seeing a Stonehaven video only it was very stormy. The local folks really take pride in their town. Very clean. That Mar's bar. Well, my mouth was watering for a moment. I'd pass. Trying to cut back on chocolate. Not sure if you review comments on these older video's, bring shelled walnuts and toss a few into the oatmeal. Hi Steve, Just watched your film on Stonehaven, can I ask you do you have a plan of what you are going to film before you arrive in the town? I only ask because you do make such enjoyable travel films. I also agree with Collin below, you should invest in a drone & licence as nowadays drones are so easy to fly and so portable too. Obviously would definitely add a further enjoyable dimension for you as the filmmaker and also the viewer.
@steve-marsh
@steve-marsh 3 года назад
Thanks so much Alistair! And yes, a drone would be awesome, I've been researching a bit and it's a tricky balance - the cheap ones are pretty poor quality, but I think I need to start that way rather than invest £500-£1000 and crash it due to inexperience of flying. I'd need at least 1080p and a gimbal I believe? Definitely on the radar! I try to put a little bit of planning in, and always look for something a bit different to drop in (hence the mars bar!) but other than that I just try to wing it! Thanks so much for the positive feedback!

Another enjoyable, charming video from you. I couldn't decide if it was amusing or sad--maybe both--that Stonehaven boasts on its Welcome sign of being birthplace of R.W. Thomson, inventor of the pneumatic tyre; is he a big name in those parts? Here in the US abominations such as the deep-fried Mars bar--and worse--are usually found at county fairs and the like, not in picturesque seaside towns. I've never tried one but I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't, given the opportunity. Cheers, and thanks for another entertaining video.

Thanks so much James! Yes, Mr Thomson is a big deal here 🤣 I’m biased towards Stonehaven so I think that’s a pretty cool invention :) I’m surprised it’s taken me so long to try one, never again but it was fun! Thanks so much for watching!

Hi Steve Hope you're well.. Would be great if you could do the Q&A you thought about doing. Would be ideal whilst we're in lockdown? I'd love to see you make use of a drone, happy to contribute a couple of quid... Something to ponder.

Awww thanks so much! I'd probably crash it into the sea :D The Q&A will happen I promise, I was thinking to maybe put something out around Christmastime, but with restrictions tightening around us and no hope of travelling any great distance it might end up happening sooner! :)

There is a first class caravan and motor home park beside the leisure centre. As a local I would prefer to see that used rather than have camper vans parked everywhere. Glad you enjoyed your visit though.

Thanks Jane, I lived there for all my teenage years and my dad is still there. I understand your comment as Stoney really has changed a lot with all the campers on the road these days. I remember when I was a kid being able to go to the fireballs and have no problem getting a great spot, I don’t even bother now! I try my best to camp in a non-intrusive way, and never use campsites, but still appreciate the comment.

Great film! Nice to see something positive about campervans in Scotland! I'd heard that overnight parking was banned in that carpark and the locals were really pissed off with campervans and motorhomes in general? Hopefully not the case?

Certainly no signs there, and I'm semi-local (lived there in my younger years and my dad still does) and not heard anything, but I guess there will always be some who don't like it and I guess a minority who might leave rubbish etc, but I'm always considerate for sure. @steve-marsh
@steve-marsh 3 года назад
Yeah, Stonehaven still has a few boats, but nothing like it used to be - I guess the quotas and restrictions have affected the non-commercial industry over here quite a bit, but I say that as someone with no real knowledge! I believe lobster and crab are what they catch here, but not sure about the bigger boats that go further afield. Cheers for watching :)
