Compared to the frescoes in many Renaissance and Baroque churches throughout Rome (and Italy), maybe especially those of the Counter Reformation, these murals are fairly primitive. Nothing to compare with those by Signorelli, Masaccio or Ghirlandaio.
I'm a little disappointed that you didn't cover whether the Stairs themselves have been "restored". They were covered in wood overlays that were considerably worn. Have those been replaced?
Sooo.....you think you have the holiest site ever, some stairs Jesus actually "walked" on and "bled" on, a place the Vatican museums considers extremely important as the "last great restoration"..... .....but the Vatican couldn't be bothered to part with any of its' billions of dollars to actually restore the damn stairs? It took almost two decades and required private donors, hence the snails pace. In all fairness, I'm sure they were busy using their wealth and power in other ways, like hiding criminals, and simply didn't have the time. The best part of this restoration is the cleaning of the frescoes. Stunning, stunning work.
What if you use the stairs like a normal person? Or there is an emergency and you have to hurry up or down? Do you still have to go up or down on your knees.

Hello! Of course we shal now pray in spirit and truth. But the Truth is Christ who came in the flesh and actualy walked upon those steps (or perhaps did not but that is another question) People like to go the holy land or walk up those steps because they feel close to those events and that sweet face (especialy for people from the mediteranean this kind of experience is important). When the apostles point out to Christ how awesome the temple is He seems to tell them that physical places do not matter, but the temple the true temple is Himself and he is physical. I supose you are protestant? I am a hypocrite so pray for me.

It was always my understanding that these were a replica of the stairs Christ walked. Nevertheless, trust me, they are not holy. The only thing valuable and holy is your living relationship with the living God.
