On October 31, 1517, a rebellious German monk named Martin Luther is said to have nailed his Ninety-Five Theses to the door of Castle Church. This simple act of protest sparked a religious revolution that would split Western Christianity and shake the foundations of Europe's cultural identity.

Luther happened to live in the age when the printing press was invented. It’s helpful to realize that the vast majority of people were illiterate in medieval times and before. That’s why pictures were painted on the walls of churches and stained glass windows served the same purpose. The only Bible that existed, pre-Heidelberg, was a hand written manuscript that was worth lots of money.

There is no such thing as the “Protestant Church.” From the Reformation emerged the Trentian Roman Catholic tradition, the Lutheran (Evangelical Catholic) tradition, the Reformed tradition, and the Anabaptists. I feel like the Lutheran Confessions should've been mentioned, as this video seems to generalize all of the Protestant traditions as having been united in a counter-church to Rome. On the contrary, Dr. Luther was seeking to reform the Western Catholic Church. The goal wasn't to break away or be as un-catholic as possible, but to return the Western Church to the faith of the early Catholic Church.

Reformation SHOULD happen. If not, every single people who wants to go back to the truth will be burned like Jan Hus. Disscussion and peaceful talk is not a good option... srsly.

I don't think so either. I'm sure he would have liked the whole Church to follow the Bible rather than much of it sticking with "Catholic" tradition.

@@nomadiccheese4911 , as it says in the video, people started arguing, things got out of control...... It comes down to people wanting CONTROL over others. Got to love human nature.

It doesn't really matter what he intended tbh. He had a cause and it made an effect. We can't really determine what he was thinking, though I believe he has said on some occasions that he intended for reform rather than the splitting on the church, so you may be right.

Why the mocking tone Of the narrator? Not cool. Luther was a a pivotal person in history. He brought back scholarship and critical thinking to Bible study. His effect was profound.

Catholic comes from the greek word Katholikos which means universal. The problem is that the Catholic Church wasn’t being ‘catholic’ at that time and was being unfair in many ways. But at the same time I think that these problems weren’t going to be solved by creating a new church, I think in this case it would’ve been better to fight and overcome the mistakes that the church was doing. In the end there is so much division between Protestants that I don’t think it’s actually better. The Catholic Church is still standing and despite all its mistakes it is trying to do what it’s always been supposed to and always been called to do which is evangelize.

The Catholic Church had already broken off of the Orthodox Church (the most original) in 1054.
