Hi-to see extra videos of your painting techniques, is that at the highest Patreon tier? I’d love to support, but I need to trim back my budget for 2023 😁
dumb question but I noticed you have a VERY smooth color transition from the top of the thigh color to the darker sides of the thigh and I understand using a lighter paint on the top of the thigh but how do you smooth this transition out? I've done the same thing or tried it and my colors SHARPLY contrast one another and you can see the color difference lines very easily even when its similar colors next to one another, it doesn't look like you just used a lighter but similar color, you somehow smoothed it out as it went from one color to another and didn't have a sharp edge line between them, is there a way to do this or am I just bad at painting?
I lived this just yesterday. Been drawing and painting for years, but just last week i had access to minis for painting (they were really expensive in Brasil before 3d printers). I achieved a level that I never expected when finishing my first mini painting, and I couldnt be happier ☺️
it works the other way around too. im mostly a digital artist, but ive been getting into minis bc i felt ive grown wayyy too reliant on zooming in in my art as of late, which made my irl sketches really imprecise. plus, seeing 3d for a change does help you not forget how shadows work
Yeah, I'm a freelance artist by trade, and a lot of this is just "regular art" basics. I think the thing that can help people out a lot is learning how reflective highlights work on different materials and shapes, look up tutorials on that.
You covered something that has been oddly missing in my latest purchases of "how to draw books" applying these shapes to every object is gonna help me immensely with my shading. Thank you!
Perfektně vysvětlená a ukázaná základní teorie 👍
Once again, Zumikito proves to be a master of condensing useful, entertaining and dynamic information in so few minutes. And of course with a very original creative twist, excellent as always my friend!
Since I got into the hobby a few years ago. I said that once I started looking at the model like a 3D colouring book my painting has grown exponentially.
I just have to say between you and several other content creators, my painting skills have grown exponentially in a rather short amount of time. You do allot for the mini painting community and I always look forward to new uploads! Awesome video as always.
A true joy to see how you stepped up your video game over time. Easy to understand through visualization and clear steps. The comedic factor breaks up the seriousness of those topics and simply makes it fun to follow your descritptions. ...also big phat anime shapes 10/10
“It’s not a cube, let me tell you that” 😂. Every episode has at least one golden line. We need a ‘quote book’ at the end of each year with absolutely no context, just an image and the quote next to it. ‘Zumikito’s pearls of wisdom 2023’
I was about to start painting a 40k army and decided to take a look at RU-vid. I stopped by one of you vidoes and was impressed. So, I watch another and another and...friend, you are amazing. I have learned from EVERY video I have watched. Thank you for real content presented in an entertaining manner.
Zumi… I’ve watched many a video on this subject. But this one, this one right here… This one clicks a lot with me. Thank you for this video, it definitely helped me out
dude you are an absolute LEGAND! i have learnt SO much from your videos. i love your straight to the point, no hours of talking about nonsence 'like some other videos' no names mention. but yeah i love your content and just wanted to say thank you SO SO much. you have helped me VASTLEY improve my painting. love Cam
I was [am] a traditional oil painter LONG before I began to paint miniatures. I can tell you that I had an IMMEDIATE ability to produces painted mini's that LOOKED like oil paintings. I surprised my own self actually, but I guess it all makes sense. I just know what to do, and how to get the 'look' I'm after. ALL of my mini's look nearly photo-realistic. In fact, the only thing I initially needed time to get used to, was how small the brushes needed to be, alas, VERY small as it turns out. I build my colors through direct blending ON the model, and 'glazes'. Producing colors through glazing, produces results on par with the Masters. I had always preferred the Dutch method, and thus I begin by painting my entire mini in grey scale....like Vermeer did, for instance. THEN, after the mono-chromatic paintjob it done, I begin building color through transparent, thin, glazes. Since the 'values' are already fully established via the initial mono-chromatic phase...the color phase turns out exceedingly rich and very very realistic. I'm jut now beginning to scratch build my mini's...which is a whole different skill, but quite fun. Also, using a monocle or min. 2.5x magnifying visor makes a WORLD of difference in the detail you can ultimately achieve with scratch building your figures. Sometimes I 'buy' the heads already done and ready to go, also, sometimes I buy 'hands' already ready to go, and then I build the rest of the figure from scratch, including all clothes, equipment, etc.. Scratch building with a 3d pen and micro diamond and sanding bits allows you to achieve super fine details without having to spend so much time like it does when trying to scratch build with epoxy putty...which is too time consuming. 3d pen scratch building figures is really, really easy to do once you get the initial 'feel' for the heat setting on the pen AS WELL AS the heat settings on your 'smoothing' heat element...which is just a modified electronic soldering iron with bits you can easily customize yourself via grinding whatever shape and size you think you might need or want to use.
Great video. The concepts here are stuff they teach over the years in Arts class, but in a super TLDR version that still holds plenty of value. You stuff looks amazing, the video is well made with just enough humor to kepe you entertained but not loose focus. Subscribed. Keep up the good work!
This video was great! Thanks for taking the time to make it! I don't do much painting of minis anymore but as a hobbyist artist who is a bit intimidated with color this actually was a really eye opening piece of information!
Yes ! I kinda discovered this accidentally but in the opposite way. I took the principles of shading and high-lighting miniatures and applied it to 2D adult coloring books and the result was spectacular.
I love love love coloring books for grownups and would love for there to be even more, more types, ones that help you learn specific techniques even as you relax with them. I worked in publishing during the height of coloring book marketing hype, and it broke my heart to hear the marketing dept tell the editorial dept that it had been decided that the “fad” was over and we shouldn’t publish them anymore. This is an inspiring video. Also is inspiring me to go ahead and buy the KD minis currently living in my shopping cart 😂
great work with the colouring book. a great artistic start for painting minis you went over the good foundations of practical drawing. painting minis helped also from studying art. i never painted a mini before, then tried it with the game imperial assault. having a professional career of 15 years in animation, definitely help with colour theory, light, depth, faces and overall look.
So crazy you came out with this. I was never good at 'art' let alone coloring. And after years of painting minis I find myself with my 4 year old niece who wants me to color with her and found I was discovering that my 'eye' for volumes, shading, lighting, was all coming together with just the 4 off-brand crayons we were given with the coloring book. Now I want more coloring books lol.
Wow! That figure looks absolutely amazing! I would get into painting my miniatures, but I know I don't have the patience or drive to actually do even remotely decently.
If it appeals to you, you have some figurines and the interest, it may be simpler than it seems to achieve a good result. One simple step at a time, like even painting one color per week, like one time the skin, one time the red cape on a figurine or a group of figurines... In only two steps for each color, you may reach a very good rendering. Just in case you would like to do it...
Good stuff and deconstruction of the technique. This also works both ways, skills acquired through miniature painting will translate back into 'traditional' art.
I haven't been watching your videos for quite some time for some reason. Man, your beard is (more) glorious now! And also I'm catching up with every vide I haven't seen. And also I may add that your content quality was already amazing and has even improved greatly. Cheers! 🍻
Could try water color pencils. They act like a color pencil when dry, but when wet cover more like paint. Block in an area while wet then shade with another color or darker shade and lightly blend with a bit of moisture and erase mistakes with water. The only drawback is needing a clear spray coat to set the paint permanently
I know nothing... But the simple action of using darker tones in cracks, crevasses and lower areas... And lighter tones on raised areas or the top of things... Has made my miniatures look waaayyyyy better lmao
I tried warhammer when I was 10 and sucked ass at it. But the last 2 years I've been getting into acrylic and coloured pencil drawing.. It's been a great foundation to consider jumping back into it. I'm just gonna start with 3 brushes, some box art paints and a doomwheel.
Probably the most easily digestable video on this topic that I've yet seen. My problem when it comes to painting is that, I can sculpt miniatures pretty well because my brain can understand a 3d medium very easily, but when it comes to 2d, it's like I'm dyslexic and my brain just slides off the image I want to create or the painting I want to do so it's a challenge for me to retain the information and then put it into practice so, I like this video a lot, very, very useful, thanks!! :D
Awesome video! I knew about the general idea of breaking things down to shapes, but using the coloring book example is genius. I feel that thinking about it through this lens will make me a better artist and mini painter
First thought: Color books? Okay, you piqued my curiosity... *sees Alphonse Mucha* Now you have my attention. It'd be cool to do some miniatures in the styles of Mucha (pulp art vs. Slavic epic).
The funny thing is I do 2D art and 3D modeling and thought it would take forever to paint minis right. Little did I know my know how translated quite well and I was getting good paint jobs by my third model. For those who only paint minis, this coloring book technique will 100% step your game up.
Great video, you've got me thinking it's time to dig out the adult colouring books I gave at the back of my cupboard. All hail adult colouring books, yes you forgot the U ( very American spellings lol)
....I took this advice backwards hahaha. I've painted minis for ages, but could never sketch so didn't do much 2d art. Then made friends with some professional artists and started colouring in their linework for fun, and was shocked at how well I was able to do just from the painting knowledge I had.
Very interesting Video, I always struggle to find the perfect or most realistic position for highlights and reflection, this video helped me a bit thank you :D
Lol dude! 4 am here, firsttimeI saeyour video and I definitely wanna have some cervezas with you! Ur funny af! Alreadg subscribed! Wish I saw this before I painted that KD mini with her nit double cubes
Essentially, you are going through color theory and an art class and in this case, it’s not that much of a secret that if you kind of want to go next level with your painting in general, it all goes back to basic art theory and those fundamentals thereof - sure you are painting a miniature, but that is a 3D canvass. Shading, layering, blending, and et al is the art work and the art world is the mother of all painting.
Nice video! Always a pleasure to watch you. You have a style that doesn’t talk down nor do you pack your presentation with continuous banter in self advertising. You and Duncan from 2 Coats! - are very good to watch and learn from.
