There is nothing better than seeing people experience these books for the first time! Also you are picking up on a lot of stuff that most people don't, which makes it clear how thoroughly you are reading. I hope this series gets a ton of attention because its clear how much work you put into this!
Waymar Royce is an officer because he is the son of a lord (John Royce of the Vale, the one who interacts with Littlefinger). The book never says it, but we see all the highborn end up in leading or special positions in the Watch. that's how Jon will be chosen as the Lord Commander's stewart and Sam will be assigned to attend Maester Aemmon.
I recall that most people disregard the threat of the White Walkers, but dislike calling them by that name, similar to the Bloody Mary/Candy Man urban legends. If you ever get the chance, consider A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. It contains three short stories following the beginnings of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, Egg. Egg's actually Prince Aegon of House Targaryen and destined to become King Aegon the Fifth.
Re: chapter 16, my favorite part that didn't make it into the show was Renly getting kicked out of the hall for bursting into laugher about Joffrey losing his sword to Arya.
I don't remember the books too well, having read them in 2015, but there are several hints in the first season of the show that Joffrey's personality and actions are a direct consequence of Robert's absence as a father (he tells him just that on his death bed). While Robert was not cruel, Joffrey also took example of his disdain for women, preference for violence and love of hunting ("killing things clears my head").
You just became the greatest reactor of all time, keep reading! Fire and Blood is a history of the Targaryen dynasty written from the POV of a maester giving varying accounts of what happened, a bit dry compared to the actual series but still a compelling and fascinating read. The shorter Dunk and Egg prequel stories are excellent reads and influence a ton of what’s going on in present ASOIAF another must read after you finish ADWD.

They decided to use "White Walkers" in the show partly because the antagonists in Lost were called "the others". So it was just to differentiate from another hugely popular tv series. But yes, the Others in the book is the same thing as the White Walkers in the show.
You are correct. I think "the Others" is the kind of monster name that would only work in the book because if you hear actors on a show talk about "the others," you can't see the capital letters and think they mean something else.

I'm glad you picked up on how smart Jon is in the books! He really is very different from the show version, at least as the show continued on. I think the show wanted him to fit into the "fighter" role but he's actually pretty political in the books!
I think it's also interesting that there are SO many hints that Jon isn't Ned's son! And I am totally with you on the show putting so many horrible rape scenes when so many of them in the books are consensual 😭
@@ari-mh6dw the showrunners had a hard on for rape scenes, misogyny and gay stereotypes. Remember they also told Emelia Clarke under filming of season 2, same time she had a brain hemorrhage, that she needed to show her boobs in the scene because "thats what your fans want"
@@timgreenwald1043 Jon as a lord commander in the books is peak fantasy badassery. 16 year old boy with long black hair in all black clothes with a direwolf by his side and a raven on his shoulder. And thats just visually, in character as well he is so much better in the books, and extremely sharp and quick witted.
Great seeing you do that I'm really thrilled. Can't wait until you get to the second book where the show strted to deviate a little bit more. By books four and fove it is practically different story.
This was really fun to watch and hope you continue with these through your ASOIAF book reading. :) I am also sorry because it’s been so long since I read them so I don’t have much to say about my thoughts on the first book other than I remember it’s the closest one to the s1 show counterparts and that it’s really entertaining (which is something all of them are).
Another point in Ned's favor regarding Jaime sitting on the throne - unlike on the show(s), it's not a chair a little bit above the floor. In the books, the Iron Throne is huge and extremely high up. You don't just flop down on the seat because you're tired, you have to climb a LOT of steps to get to the throne and sit there. Sitting on the throne is a deliberate statement, it is an act one does not do lightly. It's like walking in to find a giant turd on the throne - it did not get there by mistake, or casually, someone went through a lot of trouble to do it, for a reason.
The significance of Drogo's behavior of their wedding night is that he is basically approaching Dany like a wild horse he is taming. It's funny how the people of Westeros use horses and riding as sexual metaphors, but they talk about "breaking in a filly" or "riding her hard through the night" but the actual master horsemen in the world, treat horses very differently and while they think of sex and riding together, the result is a very different approach to a new and inexperienced partner. It does not change the fact that Khal Drogo is still treating her like a beast of burden whom he owns and can decide to ride whenever he wants ... but the books trusts us to understand the nuances and subtleties and does not need to drive the point home with a brutal rape scene.
I loved these books and I'm so glad you're reading them! I found myself picturing the actors on the show as I was reading, even though the book says some of the characters (like Daenerys, Jon) are so much younger.

I am now reading the third book, Storm Of Crows. This took me back a few months ago when I started reading A Game of Thrones being already a fan of the series and having seen it several times, just like you. It also helps me review what I have already read. We may have some differences ( love Arya, and hate Sansa in the first book 🙂) but that's what makes it entertaining. I can't wait for the next video. Girl, you don't know how I love that you do this, it's like watching game of thrones all over again. I remember that it cost me a lot to get into this world, until well into the second book I didn't understand much, who belonged to this family, what was this kingdom, many names, religions, history. I was always taking notes and with a map next to me so I wouldn't get lost. About differences to books. I remember being very much of the Starks and hating the Lannisters a lot. The chapters that surprised me the most were Ned and Jon, Ned because there is a lot of information of past wars and quarrels with characters and Jon because he is much more interesting than the show, he is still good, but not stupid. And hating the Lannisters the chapters I enjoyed the most were undoubtedly Cersei and Jaime, Cersei to continue growing my hatred for her, and Jaime to see the evolution of the antihero. But apart from the Starks and the Lannisters there are many families that don't appear in the series, that have some of the best plots, I can't wait for you to read it.
Loved this video! I've been trying to find a series exactly like this for ages. I'm very excited to hear more of your thoughts and reactions as you continue reading. Even though the books are initially very similar to the show, some of the seemingly tiny differences are still important to take note of in my opinion, so I'm glad you commented on those. For example, I feel like the difference between the White Walkers from the show and the Others from the books already indicates a very different understanding of this story. The show as a whole seems to downplay some of the magical and fantastical aspects of ASOIAF and while that may work well in the early parts of the story, I don't think that did them any favors when they got to the later parts. Also, I really do not understand why they felt the need to alter the scene of Dany and Drogo's wedding night the way that they did. "Shock value", I guess, but the GoT world is so full of shocking and awful events anyway, so it really is just a strange and gross change to make. Thank you for all the effort you put into this, I will be eagerly awaitng the next upload!
Hey awesome video, season 1 is definitly the closest to the book because there is no butterfly effect from missing details yet. You will see that small details in the books that are not in the show become very important along the line.
Just so you know and this isn’t spoilers but Aegon conquering Westeros to stop the White walkers is something they just made up for House of the dragon unless they add it in the next AOIAF books. So Aegon is just a conquering badass in the books. I can’t wait for to get to book 3-5 they are the best of the best imo.
No need to worry that the books get the same ending as the show. That seems highly unlikely once you’ve caught up on the reading. They aren’t very similar the books and the show as you’ll notice after each book.
Regarding the Prologue, they did substitute the name "White Walkers" for the Others on the show, because it can be confusing, not knowing if the characters are talking about the Others, or something more normal. In the book, the capitalization makes it obvious what they are talking about, but it's harder to tell on the show. As far as the prologue goes, comparing the show and the books, while a brief summary of both versions could be very similar, I found the difference to be VERY significant, and one that set the tone for the show and explains why it ended as it did. The difference is that the book version takes the characters seriously as people, even though they will only truly appear in the prologue. We know their names, we know their skills, and something of their backgrounds, and the dynamics of their group. We know that they are all good at their jobs in different ways, and each has his own shortcomings. Gared is set in his ways, Will is fearful and Waymar is inexperienced and arrogant. But Gared is tough and capable, Will is very good at scouting and Waymar is smart and observant, and when it comes to facing the Others, fearsome nightmare beings out of legends and myths, he is the only one to stand his ground and do his duty. Will freezes up and can't work up the nerve to warn his commander, and Garen just bails, but Waymar raises his sword, challenges the enemy and dies fighting, even though he is hopelessly outclassed. And the book recognizes his valor saying "In that moment, he was a boy no longer, but a man of the Night's Watch." Even if no one else ever learned of it, even if it did not change anything or save anyone, Waymar Royce did his duty in the face of impossible odds. And now his Watch is ended, and we shall not see his like again. In the show, these 'characters' are disposable red shirts. They are nameless indistinguishable chumps who look lost and hopeless, like stoned or drunk teenagers wandering into the woods during a party, and about to get killed by the slasher/monster. The leader character is sneering right before the expression of terror on the object of his sneers causes him to turn around and instantly be killed. The other man dies just as easily, and the deserter, rather than a tough & experienced man with a long record of good service behind him, who broke because of the incomprehensible horror he witnessed, and arguably was not in his right mind when he deserted, is reduced to a derpy young man in a silly hat, who is certainly sensible and capable of talking, who simply fled out of cowardice, rather than accumulated trauma. The book cares about the characters, and makes them human to the reader, and makes their deaths matter, as much as they can in a single short chapter of a book. The show is more interested in hooking the audience and shocking them with a jump scare, and the characters are just tools to bring it about. This was not much of a difference when they were adhering faithfully to the plot Martin laid out and by necessity retaining much of his dialogue, but the nihilistic attitude and prioritization of shock and violence that the changes in the plot of the prologue reveal about the writers explain how it started to fall apart as they deviated from the book material, or had only the general outline to follow.
these are probably really time consuming and it'll take forever to get through all the books but i really hope you dont lose interest and stick with it and keep doing these
Just a suggestion, when im reading asoiaf i like to have a map open at the same time. kind of helps me visualize and keep track of where the characters are at. theres a map at the start of the book but its kind of annoying to flip back and forth, and isnt as detailed as some online maps.
Apparently Emilia Clarke couldn't tolerate contact lenses so that's why they decided to exclude the fact that Targaryens have purple eyes. Yes, we were robbed 🤣
Peppermint Tea. You should also read the Dunk & Egg novellas. They were collected in a single volume as A Knight of the seven Kingdoms. Might be a particular good palate cleanser after the Red Wedding.

It's so good to hear someone read the confrontation over Arya's fight with Joffrey, and come away blaming Robert instead of Sansa. She gets an insane level of hate in the fandom, and it's going to be nice to watch someone who likes her despite the show letting her down a LOT. Sansa was very badly served by the show, and about the only thing they did right was track her geographical location up through season 4. They completely omitted her real story as a prisoner of the Lannisters, and cut out almost all her good moments, while portraying her as dumb and useless. Her story is so much better on the page.
I like reading about every character's thoughts (although the saga is written in 3rd person), specially Darnerys's. To my taste, her process of emotional emancipation from Viserys is too short, so getting to know her feelings in the books with more detail made me be much more interested in her than in the version of the show.
I just found this series, and I'm really looking forward to hearing you share your thoughts! Regarding Waymar Royce; I find it useful to compare him to Jon. Waymar isn't a bastard, sure, but he's a younger son in a House with plenty of sons to spare, enough to give one to the Night's Watch. He's one of the few highborn people who voluntarily join the Night's Watch. Like Jon, Waymar likely found himself disappointed with the reality of the Watch. Unlike Jon, it seems he didn't get the lesson about humility and understanding. Waymar is arrogant, dismissing his more experienced brothers, and leads them into danger. And yes, he's annoying. But when faced with the threat of The Others, Waymar goes from arrogant youth to "a man of the Night's Watch" real quick. He faces hopeless, impossible odds with defiance and courage, and dies quite a noble death. I think Waymar shows early on that characters in this story can be quite grey, be more than meets the eye, and might be faced with struggles that will test who they truly are.
I highly recommend reading that if after she has finished the main books she wants to continue reading. That book would be the perfect option in that case. Would also be very interesting to follow her reaction when reading that book.
Yes, you got it. Bran starts the book because he is meant to be the end of it too. The ending of the show was not a quick job improvised by hacks who wanted to get away, no matter how many fools repeat it. Bran king, Tyrion hand, genocidal Daenerys, Jaime & Cersei dying together, queen Sansa, exiled Jon are all GRRM's intent as he told the showrunners back in 2013.
Obviously entitled to your opinion (that's why we're all watching these :p) but I find the idea that Arya is stereotypical and sansa is unique genuinely comedic when Sansa is to a t the archetypal "I want to be a princess so bad" character from literally every "girly" story ever. Almost every princess having story I can think of has a character like Sansa, the only difference is Sansa has realistic consequences for her ambitions lol Honestly every character in asoiaf is a stereotype tho, just done incredibly well. Jon is stereotypical warrior prince who lives with warrior monks, daenarys is a stranger in a strange land and exiled princess and slave revolution storyline rolled into one, catelyn is a stereotypical mother bear and noble woman, Ned is a noble and friendly dad, Robb is the most stereotypical older brother I can think of, Jaime is prince charming, cersei is the evil queen, Robert is the drunk idiot king, even the nights watch and kingsguard are just stereotypical warrior monks with different coats of paint. Arya being the "not like other girls" stereotype and annoying little sister and dirty wild child is the same. It's all stereotypes and the evolution of those characters in a world with realistic consequences to every action. All that to say that Arya deserves ur empathy as much as Sansa and Dany smh smh Hopefully this comes across as jokeful as I intend it, as I am very stoned and American and rude Keep being awesome and having ur opinions, but let Arya grow on u. She's just a kid! :p
I'm glad you're reading these books. Daenerys in the book doesn't get raped by Khal Drogo. The rape scene is something that the showrunners, Weiss and Benioff put the rape in the show. That was part of their pattern of making the show worse for the female characters.
The survivor of the Prologue is a young man in the show but a seasoned ranger in the book. It makes Ned's handling of him look all the more irresponsible in hindsight.
Peppermint tea ;P The first book and first season is very similar, the differences start getting big in the second book I think, (my poor sweet Stannis) when I rewatched Season 2 after reading the books I was going "hmmm" at everything. Little did I know I recognised the cracks that were to become fractures ;_; I always liked the book version of the White Walkers/Others compared to the show. Obviously they have the same origin in the books but it adds a whole new dimension to it. They clearly have developed a language, a culture. It does make me think it's less "muahahaha we're evil let us destroy the humans" and more "we're doomed to extinction unless we attack the humans first". GRRM did grow up during the Cold (lol) War after all. Both sides feared that was the case. Also to point out how different in character they are in the books, you'll see more of this later on. In the show they're basically crazed Orcs having Hollywood battles, in the books they're so slick and ethereal. They even have a duel with Royce!?! They have a flat out ritual! Which has lead to a convincing fan theory IMO. Royce's appearance as described.... did the Others think he was a Stark? Is that why they had a duel and only attacked at once once the sword shattered? GRRM's writing has lead to plenty of fan theories due to sheer detail and double meanings he sprinkles throughout. Sometimes it's hard to see whether we are thinking too hard or it's intended lol. And of course can't neglect to mention how pompous and annoying Royce was, until he sees an Other. "Dance with me" redeemed him in my eyes, GRRM already sowing the seeds of his favourite element in his writing; multi-faceted people that aren't always defined by one thing. (though there is flat out evil characters lol) The kids (and Dany too) are pretty young in the books, that's because in the original plan there was going to be a 5 year time skip, he never could get it to work though. So the characters stay very young which gets weird and somewhat disturbing as they still have their 5 years later story arc. He very much agreed with the aging up of the characters in the show for this reason :P It does lead to a interesting change as well. In the show, Drogo flat out rapes Dany. Now, she's 13 in the books, and I understand that even in medieval times the age of 13 had a different context to it, but she was still 13! But even then, it is interesting that she "consents" (as much as she is able to, which isn't much at all). I don't know, is it a hint to how their relationship eventually evolves,? Is it like her eventual assertiveness and strategic thinking, she knows the situation, she knows what to say. As gross as that sounds. I dunno, I just think it's interesting she has something resembling agency in that scene in the books. I believe the reason for the change was for cinematic reasons. Since Khal is still, uh, rough with her afterwards. So I think They actually tried to use contact lenses for the trademark Valyrian purple eyes. The effect wasn't good apparently. Shame, the books gave me a love for purple eyes, whenever I create a character in a game I end up giving them purple eyes if I am able lol. Arya is the favourite character of GRRM's wife. Fun fact. Yeah, don't expect her to die lol. I think it's interesting that you say she's cliché. In the show she did definitely seem conventional, I think another reason is how influential GRRM has been. But in the books she follows that cliché but in a deconstructed way, her mental state is very different compared to the show, not a cool kick ass assassin. The sex scenes are memed quite a bit due to GRRM's prose, but I never found them to be much of a problem, I think it's just that GRRM's prose is sort of blunt, and we have some chronic discomfort with sex. It's also the same thing with the rape scenes. I do have criticisms of them, and GRRM seems to indulge in them (though it never comes across as self-indulgent edginess, if that makes sense) but they're always blunt and, well, honest. It never comes across as fetishised and/or edgy like you get in the works inspired by ASOIAF. He writes it because they're something that would happen. And while the almost cartoonish levels of misogynistic hatred hasn't aged well, it should be remembered that ASOIAF started being written in the 90s! And the misogyny and women navigating the ultra-patriarchal structure of Westeros is definitely a reaction to the playing it straight, feeble women, strong men protecting them and winning women as prizes, and GRRM elected to subvert and deconstruct those tropes. There's a lot of travelogue-esque and slow political chapters in the books, and they increase in the "second act" (if you will) of the books, book 4 and 5. Hopefully the last books will release because I think they are, even if they're not the most exciting chapters, still pretty important. Me and the other weirdos who defended those chapters and storylines and characters that were streamlined or cut, had sadistic glee after Season 8. Everybody realised in unison "oh... I guess a lot of that was important after all" XD Cersei's chapters come much later, you must go through almost 3000 pages before you get there. But they are my personal favourite POV chapters. The moment I read the first sentence I was sold. Oof, this comment is getting too long. Sorry :( I'll leave with this very cheeky bit of foreshadowing. In Arya's first chapter she asks Jon why he isn't the yard sparring with the others against Joffrey and Tommen. And in response he says "Bastards are not allowed to damage young princes". Ha! George loves sprinkling things like this. Keep an eye out, there's a lot of foreshadowing especially for Jon's parentage. And the Red Wedding.
There is a Walker that screams at the end of season 3. I can't tell if that was D&D's way of interpreting how they spoke in the book but it never occurred in the show again. Maybe the Walker was just trying to freak out Sam lol.

This is fantastic. I'm currently on the second book but consider myself so lucky to live close to where a lot of the show was shot so I often read outside and it feels like I'm in it (sad as that sounds)
I love the dany wedding line . A dothraki wedding without at least 3 deaths is considered a dull affair. ( By the end of the day, there were 12 deaths) .
"A Game of Thrones" contains some early installment weirdness from GRRM's early outlines that didn't survive his "gardener" style worldbuilding past book 1, so if anything seems a little off (like Tyrion doing flips in Jon 1), give it until at least "A Clash of Kings" haha! Seasons 1-3 and 4ish hew pretty closely to the books 1-3, but books 4-5 and seasons 5-8 really take a departure from one another (not to mention of course, that the books infamously remain unfinished, despite a seemingly endless number of HBO series Warner will order). Bran (and his daddy Ned) as a character really comes alive in the books in a way they couldn't capture in the show, because it's such an internal experience for them! They got done dirtiest by the adaptation imho. If you like dreams and prophecies, boy are these the books for you. There are tons of prophetic or otherwise mystical scenes that all have a myriad of interpretations that seem valid. Some of George's greatest work, honestly. Your analysis of Daenerys and is great. I think the show wanted to both shortcut some character development and get some "sexposition" time in with the show version of...Doreah? (whichever one it was) unfortunately with the rape scene :( Dan & Dave were not the best with the adaptation of a lot of the female characters (major and minor). They added a lot of meaningless sex and abandoned (as you noted) some meaningful sex, presumably for "shock value" since they love violent twists and cathartic reversals so much :((( I'm really looking forward to hearing your experience with all the female POV characters, it's a much needed perspective in the fandom. Big Bobby Baratheon is really super terrible, yeah, Mark Addy did maybe TOO good a job at making him likable on the show. These are some of my favorite books of all time and the fandom around them is fantastic, too! When you mentioned how the description of Winterfell has more focus so basically Winterfell castle does not look the same in the books and the show. Winterfell in the Books is wayyyyy bigger. Remember when Theon said Winterfell could repell 10,000 with 500 men? Well that isn’t true in the show because the castle is less OP in the show but basically Winterfell is actually gigantic and really well built. It can’t really beat 10000 men with 500 in the books either but the concept is true because it can have a much smaller garrison than the opposing army and beat it in the books. Basically all the castles are monster castles in the books. lol I’ll link a video that is long so I doubt you’ll watch it but it shows what Winterfell actually looks like in the books. I’ll listen through it and make sure it has no spoilers and then I’ll share it.

A good omission by the show in Jon 1 is Tyrion’s gymnastics, lol. Being someone that read after the seeing some of the show, that part always cracked me up picturing it in the show. Great idea for a video series, hope to see more. Thanks!
Arya's arc was mostly driven by the beheading of her father Ned, the muder of her dance instructor, the murder of her mother at the Red Wedding and a few other travesties that would devastate anyone at her age in the story. I found her most interesting as a sort of lone wolf. The Others is a reference to the White Walkers.
Well, book one is easy to compare because Season One is a really good adaptation. When you get to books 4 and 5, the comparisons will be of extreme difficulty, if not impossible at all. The showrunners deviated sooo much from the original sources.
My favorite character is literally Tywin so yeah sry. lol I think he’s so damn smart and pragmatic and logical. He deserves my respect. Now I’m not saying he’s a morally good character but there are other things that make up for that for me.
I know I’m coming to this a year after you posted it. But I did want to add one comment on the very first Arya chapter. When Arya and Jon are watching their brothers practice with play swords with Joffrey and Tommen there is a wonderful bit when Arya asks Jon’s why he wasn’t participating. Jon tells her that it wouldn’t be appropriate for a bastard to be practicing with the princes. But since you have already seen the show, I can say how amusing it is that Jon is actually the true Prince, while Joffrey and Tommen are the bastards!😁 I only see two videos of you covering these chapters. Are there any more?
The first 4 seasons were good for a reason. They did a good job following the books for a while but butterfly effect came into play & lack of material after. Edit: never liked Arya either, didnt think id watch all of it, but i did. i listened to it while making food. code word:peppermint tea
I heavily disagree because there was plenty of material and storylines they didn’t even include or shortened so much that they don’t even resemble much of the book version of those stories at all. I see it as just a lot of incompetence on the show runners part.
@@melkor3496 they did. but as i said it came back to bite them. i'd even say only half of s4 was good. dorne got fcked. it wasnt perfect, but it was good. s1 is the reason i even bought the books.
@@pilarslittlestudio they addressed it in the beginning. Emilia was really uncomfortable with the purple contacts and she couldn't see very well when using them, so they discarded it. CGI wasn't an option because the budget wasn't as big in the beginning. They kept it the same way for HoTD because it wouldn't make sense to change now 😊
yes they are called the others most of the time in the books but are also called white walkers occasionally. i think lost copyrighted the term “others” and that’s why they couldn’t use it in the show. i agree about the targaryens and other valyrian people having purple eyes. i would’ve loved to see that in the show. i like that in bran ii he hears a conversation between them as well, instead of him only seeing them having sex. like he doesn’t understand what they’re saying but as the readers we do. also yeah i love the child’s POV of like he thinks she is being hurt. such sweet innocence haha. and yes there will be some more spoilers for the dance sprinkled in there a bit. oops. it’s kind of hard to catch it on first read, but drogo treated dany like a horse he was attempting to tame and mount. it’s kind of gross when you realize that. thank you for your comments on robert. i really dislike him. i could not believe that he agreed that sansas wolf would be killed. like wow, that on top of everything else you said about him. i’m so excited you’re making these videos! i’m on a reread right now and i just started a storm of swords.

Targaryens not having their purple eyes is one of my big disappointments with GOT and HOTD. Some people have done edits on youtube to show how Dany's eyes should look.
My favorite show used to be Game of Thrones, but then I watched Attack on Titan. I don't know why you abandoned attack on titan . I've watched Game of Thrones and read, and I'm really looking forward to the new books because the last 2 seasons were awful. But honestly AOT is still superior, they call it game of thrones in the anime, but I think it's better. You just have to watch it, it unfolds in season 4 and you will see why this anime is so great.
I also love Sansa more than Arya I really really dislikes Jon Snow, I don't know why but when I stumble into one of his chapters I stop reading for the day hshshshhshs
