To his mother, David Hance was a shy, nerdy Puerto Rican kid from the Bronx who had an unhealthy obsession with video games. To everyone else, he was Allied-a world-class esports champion, whose boisterous live-streams garnered thousands of views. For years, Hance navigated these disparate identities with ease. But then, at age 24, he was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. Read more: www.theatlanti...

Exactly. People will watch people play chess in a dead silent room for hours on end and that's enlightenment, but watching people try and outpace the other at an incredibly fast rate- one which really tests all cognitive ability- is somehow wrong? Let people enjoy what they enjoy, people.

I suffer from an anxiety disorder, as do many people aswell. Sometimes we appear to be introverted. But it's simply not true. We love cracking up and being entertaining as much as the next person. It's just harder for us in personal contact. Anonymity of being online, and not in person helps a ton. I'm a completely different person in the online world than in person, unless it's next to very close friends. Sometimes it's not as simple as being an introvert or an extrovert.

not the game itself but the lifestyle. not much is said about the toxic lifestyle of game binging without food ,water, or sleep. Alot of that can be taxing on the body , toppled with mental exhaustion from playing on a competitive level. This can have serious effects on your body , and not all people are the same , so some are more susceptible to the fatigue and damage done to ones body while playing/streaming games 24/7. Not to say all lifestyles are the same but typically some if not most involve no sleep , no food/water and a whole bunch of gaming.

His mom is so fixated on her own idea on how he should live his life, to the point that she missed 90% of her sons life, only to find out that she wasn’t there the whole time. @socialineptitude
@socialineptitude 5 лет назад
I think the retort would be that, when you watch the Olympics or professional athletes, you are watching people who are pushing the boundaries of what a human can do physically. Gaming is more like chess or something where success depends on acquiring a skill set within a limited universe with set rules. Either way, people like what they like, so who cares?
@Cowswillrul3
@Cowswillrul3 5 лет назад
@@bez1196 Right because watching TV for just as long is SOOOO much better. At least with video games it's some sort of active stimulation and requires some thinking rather than just consuming. There's two sides of the coin here, and also a very large inbetween. Not every person is an "Addict" and play them in their leisure time. Why bash someone for doing something they enjoy? It's not like we as players do it because WE NEED THE HIT BRO. It's a fucking hobby, and the thousands of small and large gaming communities out there have helped me and millions of other people make friends where they could otherwise not locally. Don't be a willful ignorant.

i tink it is more of a liabuility issue and safety issue. in most states in the US hospital patients are only allowed to see their family for the last few days they have left to live. or close friends their family allows to go see. I don't know the specifics but I learned that when one of my ebst friends passed away. her family allowed me to go see her but I couldn't as I'd have to fly to seattle from colorado and she was in a coma so I wouldn't be able to tlak with her anyway. my parents were lucky enough to have a few last moments with her before she died in the coma. i could have but I couldn't. and from that the family told me generally how everything worked out

Unfortunately, it’s clear from the way his family acted and dismissed his passion and how only until after he passed that they even tried getting to know who he was (which I find insane since he was streaming daily), was the reason why he didn’t share who he was with them and why he created a family outside of his own. His family may have loved him but they didn’t know how to. He felt completely accepted in his gamer family and so he showed who he was to them. Those of us who aren’t close to our families know that this is just what you do to cope with feeling invisible in your own family.

Clarity - as for my situation, even though I’m a mom now and almost 40, it hasn’t gotten better. My mother continues to refuse that she has to work on how to talk to me, even though I’ve told her how to. So I’ve stopped talking to her about things in my life. It is, what it is. I know my mom loves me but that it hurts her too much to admit that she’s wrong or doesn’t know how. As a mom, I understand mom guilt very much, so I get it. I’m learning from it and trying to make sure I read all the books to learn the correct tools to be there for my son. Normally I wouldn’t make such an opinionated comment but I’m just tired of seeing parents blaming their children for their own failures. Yes, it’s hard being a parent and you have to cut yourself some slack but you also have to own up to your own shit too.
@TachibanaTengoku
@TachibanaTengoku 5 лет назад
@Clarity That still doesn't make it any better that she denied his friend the ability to visit him on the premise that he was not his friend....I can understand being afraid because you don't know the guy but damn man, in retrospect that is kind of fucked up. I know that when my grandfather died, he did not want any of us to be around him, to see him suffering, and it's entirely possible that Allied was the same way. The thing that bugs me is the fact that she said visitation was for FRIENDS and FAMILY, but she denied what seems to me to be one of his closest friends, and definitely part of his family, from being able to see her son before his death. This is why I have a list of people I need my family to contact in case anything ever happens to me. Allied is 100% correct, life is not predictable and you have no idea what may ever happen.
@umiluv
@umiluv 5 лет назад
Clarity - his friends raised money for his illness. How is that not caring for him? And how can you assume only his family was there to care for him in the end if his family didn’t allow his friends to come and visit? I find your comments to be very odd and actually have more assumptions than my own. You assume his family were the only ones to care in the end when that was NOT true. His friends were not allowed to see him. His friend shaved his head in solidarity with him because of his fear of chemo. He shared his fears with his friend and he was there with him through those fears. And his friend was VERY upset he was unable to see him before he died. His family denied his friend the ability to say goodbye to him and for what? Because they didn’t understand how he could be friends with people through gaming or online? Why does that matter? Death is not just for the person dying. It’s also for the people who care about that person. People need closure or they live through life with the burden of regret. It’s not cool what his family did to his friend. I understand not streaming your illness to an audience but if you have your son’s friend calling clearly upset and that they want to see their friend before they pass, how do you say no? I just can’t understand it. And I find it odd that you would justify the family’s behavior.

You hit the nail on the head!! One of her issues is that she never even seemed to make the effort to get to know what her son was into. So instead of admitting that now, she just seems to be ok with the fact that she was so disconnected from him when he was alive. She automatically shunned it and thought it was senseless, stupid, crazy, etc. She is too narrow minded and selfish and now she will have to live with that guilt of never bothering to get to know her son when he was alive. Sad but true. My partners parents were like that with him and his siblings growing up. Now, he suffers from anxiety, he drinks, and he always feels "empty" because he never pursued a career in music due to his parents never supporting it and always shunning it and telling him he will never amount to anything or make any money being a musician. He is pushing 60 and feels it's "too late". He is very talented and can sing, play guitar but is also depressed and has that "woulda, coulda, shoulda" mentality about it now. I tell him to try and get gigs in bars or small clubs to at least have an outlet to play in front of an audience yet he never pursues it. He had a dream to be a "rock star", however, it may be too late for that but it's never too late to get out there and play for some people in a smaller venue. He almost seems as if that would not be "good enough" for him, but I blame that on his upbringing as well and his selfish, narcissistic parents. So he's stuck in a job he hates.

Think about it. The fact that she was suspicious - that she knew about trolls and was worried that his friend could be one - tells you that she had experienced some bad sh-t. The video showed us the nice, supportive folks in the gaming community, but I’m guessing that not everyone was. (I don’t think gamers are terrible people; I just know that a-holes are everywhere.) Have some compassion for mom. She clearly loved her son and would’ve done anything to make him happy. She did what she thought was best at the time. I think the friend’s anger and frustration is really an expression of his grief. Even if he had had that last moment with David, I think he would still be angry and frustrated and sad that he can’t have more. He misses his friend.

I am a mom of a child who has a lot of online friends. Most of which do not know her. She was offline for a while because she was ill. I made sure to update her friends because I knew how much they meant to her. To say I have anger for this mother is putting it mildly. I couldn't finish this doc because of the selfishness. She never got to know her son, she put down his job, she brushed off his friends, that is just plain shitty to do, especially since this was a HUGE part of him and his life. Speaking to her directly: I understand you are hurting, but the way you treated a HUGE part of his life did not do him any justice. You put him in YOUR box, you selfishly turned a blind eye to others who were very close to him that were hurting, too. Maybe he was an introvert with you and your family because you belittled him? I can see it the way you spoke about him and his passion. If anything you, or others, learn from this is to allow your children to love what-and who-they love. Stop making them live for YOU. We are only loaned our children for a short while and then they go out in the world. You do not want to end up on a doc where people have mixed feelings about you after your own child died.

7.99k his son didn’t want to man. Listen, we gotta be respectful. We are addressing a dead persons family. Kinda taboo to cuss them don’t you think? I’m sure his mother wanted to know him more. But since gaming took up most of his time, he didn’t have the chance too. And in the end, it’s in our nature, it’s human nature, to be selfish. That’s how we survived all this time. We at core are all extremely selfish but those who experience true empathy by having that wave of realization, guide the rest of us and help us have a better understanding for empathy and selflessness.

Telling the guy that shaved his head to help your son feel better about loosing his hair to chemo that he can't come to his death bead because it's "friends and family" only? wow. I feel bad for her and don't blame her for thinking the way she does: it's hard to share your son with people you don't know when you are going to lose him. It's just so frustrating watching her reject what is obviously a big part of her sons life right up till he died. =EDIT= Since this is getting allot of attention, I would like to clarify some things: I don't see anything wrong with family only bed side, I take issue with her saying he couldn't come because it was "FRIENDS and family only" this signals to me that she didn't think of him as her sons friend. Maybe that's how Allied felt but IDK, shaving your head for someone feels like a thing only a friend would do. Like I said, I definitely don't blame her. No one teaches you the right way to loose a son. There isn't one. And when everyone in the room is grieving and distraught, it's not surprising that they might argue or say less than tactful things to each other.

It's a generational thing. If I was in a car crash my wife has a list of people who I mostly only talk to through a computer that she's to contact and she gets it.
