A timelapse build of Academy's P-40 Warhawk in 1/72 scale. . . made with Garbage! Have you ever looked at some trash and wondered if you could upgrade a kit with it? Well, I did. . . and I did! Join me as I build and experiment with using old circuitry, wire, beer cans and more on this old kit.

Cylindrical thing above the cowl is the carburetor intake. Intake below is for the radiators.
@professorbellbuilds
@professorbellbuilds Год назад
Oh that's interesting. . . I wonder, did the carburetors cause the Allison engine to stall like the Rolls Royce Merlin?
@marktuffield6519
@marktuffield6519 Год назад
@@professorbellbuildsThat is a really interesting question. A quick look at Wiki, seems to show early engines used float-type carburetors, they tried injection but it doesn't seem to have worked. Bendix pressure carburettors were used later, so I would guess this may have resolved any such issues, unfortunately no dates are mentioned in the text from my quick perusal.
@professorbellbuilds
@professorbellbuilds Год назад
@@marktuffield6519 I've never run across anything in my studies, so if I had to guess it would have been a rare occurrence if it was an issue. Then again, I've never done a deep examination of the operational use of the P-40. . . That might be a monumental task anyway given the P-40's ubiquity in the early war!

Thank you! It was a fun one to build! This Wednesday I'm planning to post a video about the Airfix P-40 which in my opinion is a much better model (even if I don't go about it as creatively)

Your P-40 started life as a "FROG" kit it was later retooled by academy. It was made with recessed panel lines and the sprue layout is different.

The initial release of the 1/72 Airfix kit has the same markings as your Academy kit and some of their starter sets (paint and glue included) also have the same markings, artwork shows a brown spinner. Glad to see I am not the only person to still use a Swiss Army Knife for modelling. I also like the idea of spotting super glue on the kitchen foil material, I still use news paper on my work surface with a cutting mat on top to work on and putting blobs of super glue on the newspaper either ends up with me or the mat stuck to it. Very impressed with your brush painting skills!

It's really nice to discover a model maker who is in your 'ball park' skills wise. I feel you learn a lot more watching people who are experimenting at your own skill level, they tend to try out things you were thinking *might* be a good idea - so you learn. LOVED the idea of the junk parts as cockpit detail. I feel for you with the electrical tape, that's one thing I tried...And nope! :) Thanks for the hard work on your video. Professor Bell, congratulations for a beautyful work. I love the P-40, but I love to much the idea of using junk parts, and making your own tools. I am a full time blacksmith and I made my own scrapers, and cutters in my forge, and another goodies as well to my beloved hobby. I love your amazing techniques and your excellent skills like "the old school of modelling", basic, simple, ingenious, very efective, and cheeper. It's so nice! The technique of the white vinegar it's new for me, and I will aply, in my next model, as well the wheel gear bays, are fantastic. ¡Thanks for this useful tip and for your illustrative, amazing and funny video! Today I suscribe to your amazing channel and I hope to follow your next video, and to learn useful and great techniques. ¡Máster Modeller Bell! ¡I Salute You! 10:37 I find using Blu Tac rolled into sausages and laid down and then the parts to be masked are covered with tissue that's been split into it's 2 plys and use just one ply. the tissue sticks easily to the Blu Tac and can be easily removed and the Blu Tac used over and over. That's for spraying, not sure how it would go with hand painting. I know what you mean about the older decals, NOTHING would work on them not even Microsol/set, they just would not soften. I ended up using other decals on my model.
@professorbellbuilds
@professorbellbuilds Год назад
That bluetac technique is a good one. The one drawback is that it can leave some residue, but I think it's worth it and fairly easy to clean up.
@potrzebieneuman4702
@potrzebieneuman4702 Год назад
@@professorbellbuilds I don't apply a lot of pressure when I lay the sausages on the model and it doesn't seem to leave residue or marks. Possibly some of the residue issues have to do with climate, hot, cold etc ?. Anyway we all use what works for us.

RAF aircrew policing the far flung corners of Empire in the inter-war period were issued with said chits in a variety of appropriate languages. Legend had it that the usual drill if captured by tribesmen of uncertain loyalty was for the captors to register their annoyance at being bombed/shot at by separating the prisoners from their most sensitive parts. A reward was offered for the return of intact personnel. (Actually, if I'd been bombed/shot at by the RAF I think I'd have been a bit peeved myself!!)

I saw this video and the other and the other on the Airfix's. It didn't looked much like the kit I just bought from academy. Looking up scalemates I found that this is the very old moulding that is so basic. The one from the late 90's is much more detailed. Not the definitive one but still

That P-40 looks pretty darn good for an experimental testbed! I think I might use some of the thin wire and beer can on some of my kits. I have tons of thin wire like that, I've been saving to use it on my models, but was thinking about ships rigging and actual wires or hoses on aircraft. It looked great for ribs. Where did you get the fine paint brushes that you used to paint the radio and instrument panels in the cockpit? The bristles were so stiff! Mine are too soft and make a mess on fine details like that. And using a tooth pick doesn't always work well either. Thanks!
@professorbellbuilds
@professorbellbuilds 10 месяцев назад
Oh, I hate using toothpicks for painting! It never works for me. I get a lot of my fine brushes at Hobby Lobby in their fine paint department. I think that one was an 18/0 for acrylic detail. I think you can get really good fine brushes from game stores too for painting warhammer stuff. Let me know how the wore works for rigging. It might be good for slack lines, but for taught I'd still use black lycra.
