A Gas Leak Could Literally Blow Your House Up!

Your house blowing up is definitely a surprise that will hopefully never happen to you or anyone you know! Natural gas and carbon monoxide are both colorless and odorless gases that can be fatal in certain circumstances. If there is enough gas in the air, it can combust and blow the building it is in to pieces. Carbon monoxide is always a part of the exhaust fumes that come out from any gas burning appliances such as a furnace or a water heater. If these units have something wrong with their exhaust/venting system, the CO levels can increase drastically and if they make their way into the house air supply it could be fatal. Natural gas on the other hand can combust. Even though it is odorless, a scent is added to it so that people will be able to smell it if it is leaking out somewhere.

I have another “major” question. I have had sand, beige sand falling from around the pipe that goes through the roof from my furnace. I seem to think that it is “fire retardant “ material. Am I right ? I have shoveled up a ton of this stuff and I am worried that it might be exposing wood from my roof to the heat of that furnace exhaust pipe, which gets fire hot. I don’t”t want my place to catch fire. Am I right ?

Haha now that you say that, I also remember that women supposedly have a much better sense of smell than men. I know that's definitely true with my wife. So besides our own "natural gas" 😂, I think the ladies in the house would smell natural gas faster than the guys. And thank you! We receive the blessing, may God bless you and family as well!

Natural gas doesn't scare me near as much as propane. Nat. Gas is lighter than air and will be more likely to dissipate. Propane is 1.5 times heavier than air and will "pool" in low areas until it finds an ignition source and then Boom.

Thank you for pointing that out! Yes, in that regard propane really is scarier!

We had a small gas leak in our restaurant and when the gas company came out, they said it was a non hazardous leak. That must be what you are talking about about. We fixed it and all is good now but I didn't know about the level of leak being more hazardous so thank you for educating us on that!

I was affected by carbon monoxide poisoning. Due to a poorly vented work area and temporary heaters. I had double and blurred vision, headache, dizzy to the point of falling down. Scary stuff, I had no idea what was going on with me, I thought I was having a stroke . Thankfully, I was brought to safety, out of the effected area. PTL, Praise the Lord! The main symptoms lasted quite a while afterwards but gradually they wore off. The next day I still had a headache and felt weak. The next

I can relate to your explanation of the gas companys sense of urgency responding to gas leaks. Few years ago the gas company here replaced all of our residential gas meters after installing new high pressure natural gas supply lines. The evening after they turned our gas meters back on (and relighting our gas appliances also) I got home late that evening. I was down wind from my gas meter getting out of my car and noticed slight smell of natural gas. Used the light on my phone to go check out the new gas meter. Found a teeny tiny leak at one of the unions fittings. So i called the gas company to let them know and figured that since it was after midnight they'd send someone out in the morning. When I called it was literally 20 questions she asked me and kept trying to get me to leave the house, even tho I kept telling her it was outside at the meter and it was a SMALL leak. About 10-15 minutes later i heard a vehicle pull into my driveway. And yes, it was a guy from the gas company tightening the union. So i agree with you that they take it seriously when they hear the words "gas leak". LoL

I used to work on a blast furnace at a steel mill. I was on overtime cleaning up around furnace where there is a high concentration of c.o. . By myself and working close by the furnace itself,I became poisoned by c.o. Barely made it out. Had I passed out ,I'd be dead. I had a horrible headache and couldn't look at light. Felt super weak. Laid outside for fresh air in the winter. Big boss came by to check on me.

Two stories: I used to be a volunteer fireman but several guys in our company were full time firemen for the nearby city. We were called to a home for a heavy gas smell call. Immediately we were all told to not turn on any lights or other switches because they can cause a spark. So you were very accurate saying that. My son had a new natural gas furnace and hot water system installed. He was complaining of a heavy gas smell every once in a while when the burner ignited. That company came and inspected and could not find an issue. The problem kept occurring and he said if the bedroom window next to the exhaust vent was open the strong fumes would enter the house. I live in another State but called the owner of the company. He came out and found the igniter would not come on until many seconds after the gas started to flow and that could have caused an explosion. They had to consult with the manufacturer to get the timing of the igniter and the gas valve to be correct but all is good now. Thanks for the good advice you share here.

Hi Jay great PSA, as a retired first responder in Illinois the first call should be 911, police and fire will be there within minutes as opposed to the gas company that can take quite a bit longer. Please people change your batteries when you change your clocks, in the Midwest thats twice a year. Here in Illinois in most jurisdictions we will give you batteries for your detectors of even give you new detectors thanks to donations, thanks Jay

The furnace PVC outlet at my neighbor’s house was emitting strange odors. I told him that the heat exchanger probably failed (20 plus year old condensing furnace) and it may leaking CO into the house as well. After several proddings, he finally called for service and was told he was lucky to be alive. Also, I installed combined explosive gas and CO detectors in my house. They are physically a little bigger than CO detectors and use electricity with battery backup. Propane is also very dangerous if a leak develops. My gas meter and pressure diaphragm (located outdoors) are over 50 years old. I called our utility and asked if there was replacement cycle. They told me they only replaced them on a “random” basis. Hmm…. Thanks for the good advice.

I've got CO detectors in every single room of the house and an extra one in the master bedroom. I don't take chances with something lethal that I can't see or smell. When I was 2yo, my dad came come to find my mom and I disoriented and almost passed out from a CO issue in the house. They became reasonably paranoid about it after that and passed the paranoia onto me. It's a good one to have though.

I tightened up my house with new windows and new doors, then the gas hot water heater didn't vent well. I had to switch to an electric one because of this. This was a disappointment, since I had bought a new gas hot water heater not long before this. The gas company suggested cutting a hole in the ceiling and dropping down a vent pipe close to the bottom of the heater or putting an expensive on-demand hot water heater on the outside of my house. Neither of this options appealed to me.

If you don't know how to turn off the gas to your home, you shouldn't have gas in your home. It should be at the gas meter. Amazon: Emergency Gas Shut Off Wrench You should also know how to turn the water off to your home as well as the Main Electrical Breaker. Learning these 3 things takes 10 minutes. Do it.

To be honest I don't have any good suggestions. The gas company provided all the gas leak detectors to us and we had to calibrate them every month at the shop. The detector itself was very expensive ( www.sensit-direct.com/product/sensit-gold-g2-combustible-gas-leak-detectors ) and on top of that, you would need the equipment to calibrate it or send it in for calibration.
