The San Antonio Spurs have been one of the luckiest, and greatest franchises over the past few decades. Here's the story of how they went from David Robinson to Victor Wembanyama.

To put it in perspective, 20 straight years of not missing the playoffs is the longest streak by a single team across all major American sports. No other team in any sport has been as successful over a 20 year span as the Spurs have, not the Lakers, not the Celtics, not the Yankees, not the Patriots, no one. Let that sink in.

When you see how singular the Fisher .04 shot, and the ‘06 Manu foul on Dirk felt, it’s easier to see how us Spurs fans point to the ZaZa foul as such a meaningful moment in terms of who ultimately would’ve won the series.
@roronoazorro9509

The problem with that thinking is that it is based off part of one game. There are multiple examples throughout NBA history of teams being in the ascendancy early and still losing the series. The 01 finals is the prime example. AI dragging his 76ers to a win over the much more favoured Lakers didnt lead to them winning the title,, or even making it a competitive series. They lost 4 straight. Kawhi definitely wouldve made it a competitive series,, but ive seen people, Spurs fans and not, say his availability wouldve meant the Spurs definitely win that series. Thats just ridiculous

Fantastic recap. I became a Spurs fan with David Robinson, and to watch them go on this run, with all the wins and the heartbreak (seriously, they could have probably had a couple more titles), spoiled me. And watching that successful redemption tour was just magical - nothing, even if they never win another title, will take that memory away. Beautiful game indeed.

When I did a formulaic dynasty ranking on Reddit ("NBA/ABA "dynasty" Rankings, Part 4 (Dynasties)"), the Spurs were #1 by a mile. It was mostly due to length; the Spurs were so good for _so_ long that it makes up for the fact that they won a single fewer championship than the Bulls, or even the larger gap between them and the Russell Celtics (which is made much narrower when I adjust for the number of teams in Russell's NBA). Curiously, the Spurs' dynasty got extended to '93 based on the methodology I used, because their one bottom-out year (1997) wasn't enough to end their run (similar to how 2020 for the Warriors wasn't enough to single-handedly end their run).

And they'd probably still be competitive even for the last few years, maybe won another title, if they could have worked things out with Kawhi. They got hits on franchise marquees every 10 or so years. Robinson in 1987, Duncan in 1997, and then Kawhi in 2011. They also got the right supporting cast, and they could have easily had a better supporting cast for Kawhi if he were still around for all of those years. His era with the team ideally would be running into the just now beginning Wemby era. Losing Kawhi hurt them a lot.

Not even talking about winning, the spurs have all around been one of the craziest teams to ever be in the NBA, Duncan and Robinson are already a crazy topic on its own, but going back to what first started the spark for the spurs, started with ice man Gorge Gervin, and center Artis Gilmore, then going to the 90s before number 21 was known all around San Antonio to be worn by Tim Duncan, Dominique Wilkins actually wore 21 before Tim was drafted, and when Dennis Rodman was on the team for a bit being traded for Sean Elliot, just for Sean Elliot to come back to the spurs and hit a crazy miracle shot and win a championship in 1999, then fast forwarding to the 2010s when they had Tracy Mcgrady on the team in 2012-2013 and then later on in 2015-2016 the spurs somehow got one of the tallest players in NBA history Boban Marjanovic, then going to present day the Spurs drafted another one of the tallest players in NBA history victor wembanyama, the spurs have definitely been one of the few most exciting teams to watch since the team was first brought into the NBA

It’s not luck. What are the odds that every single time a team tanks they get rewarded w/ a generational talent. Happened w/ Robinson, Duncan, and now Wemby. It is by design. Spurs get a pass from the critique that most teams get when they blatantly tank partly because they’re a small market team, but mostly because the powers that be in the NBA trust the Spurs front office to develop or, at the very least, not ruin a generational talent. Doesn’t make it right, but it is what it is.

People really have dismissed Pop in the last few seasons. I think it goes for all NBA coaches - maybe 0.000001% of fans can say *anything* about the coaching position as if they are qualified to speak on what is a “good” NBA coach or a “bad” NBA coach. Even the worst NBA coaches of all time have more knowledge, experience, and skill than any random basketball fan could ever dream of achieving. It’s crazy that people think the spurs should get a new coach for Wemby. The track record speaks for itself, and if you ask anybody in the NBA, past or present, I guarantee you this will not call Pop’s career “luck”.

You left out one of the most interesting parts of the story. Pop wasn't "promoted" to head coach, Pop was the GM and he fired the current head coach and hired himself lmao. This was obviously a great move in hindsight but was seen as unprofessional and wrong at the time, especially since the spurs saw a good amount of success with deep play off runs under former coach Bob Hill. Reports at the time said the players were shocked and appalled that Bob was fired. Fans were outraged. It's a fascinating part of the Spurs history that people don't talk about enough.

@breadandcircuses8127 spurs very well could have beaten the warriors in 2017 if kawhi weren't injured. Spurs were all playing very well up until he went down. If Durant opted to go with the Spurs, they'd have an offense that ran through Durant, Kawhi and Lamarcus. And they'd have vets like Gasol, Manu, and Parker. If Kawhi had still been injured with Durant on the roster, they could have afforded to rest Kawhi and keep him from further injuries. Once he comes back with limited minutes, it could have been enough to beat Klay, Steph and Dray with Durant on Spurs roster. And Spurs would've continued competing for the next 3 years. Of course, it's also under the assumption that Kawhi would also not leave. So it's a lot of what ifs on my part. Lol so take with a grain of salt.

Odd implications at the end to try and blame the Spurs for some things. DJ’s negative comments about the org came from pure ego. Those “mind games” (LOL) was signing third stringer PG Nicolas Laprovittola and them “not believing in him” because he wasn’t immediately handed the PG keys, as if he wasn’t a super raw 29th pick with a broken jumper. Not to mention the Spurs giving him a big contract extension with a torn ACL. Stephen Jackson is also a known clown who was kicked off the team because he thought he was better than Manu and has shit on the Spurs relentlessly since then. He shouldn’t be taken seriously. Also, this really glances over how much Kawhi fucked over the org to try and make it seem like it was the Spurs’ fault for the breakup. Dude wanted to be in LA plain and simple, he couldn’t even bother to support the team in the playoffs and be on the bench. Also hid from Pop and co when they visited him in NY while absolutely tanking his trade value keeping his injury vague and making it known he was LA or bust. The Spurs aren’t infallible, but this video attributes a lot of smart management to luck and implies fault where it isn’t due.

@@TheN-Guyyou guys have a lot of picks too, and some high upside ones. I can’t believe TOR traded a T6 protected 1st for Poeltl on an expiring, (after he turned down like 4/65 or something too) especially bc they knew they’d have to pay him at least near 20M/y. It’s not like they were a contender, or even a good playoff team…or even a good team lol. They were fighting for a play in spot! They sent a 2nd too. It’s even crazier bc TOR drafted Poeltl pretty high in the draft, and traded him w DeMar for Kawhi a couple years in to his career. Full circle. Such an awful trade though, for the pick to be not only that lightly protected, but also protected for 3y. So even if TOR does hit in the lotto this draft, while they’ll likely be better next year, SAS will still have two more cracks at it. Imagine if they end up trading like pick 8 for Poeltl? Wild. But ya SAS has rly adapted w the times. They weren’t a team that really traded a lot, didn’t seem like they’d be one to fully tear it down and rebuild. But they did, and yea they got super lucky getting Wemby…but they were really good collecting assets before and after that. Getting the assets for DeMar, hitting on non premium picks like Keldon, (Derrick White but that was before, Keldon kinda was too but w/e…they’ve always been great at finding gems in the draft) Vassell at 11 was one of the only good picks in that range beside the (in hindsight, though I was shocked he fell that far) obvious. The Dejounte trade was great, sold at peak value. Those picks could be valuable, they seem very shaky. Obviously in hindsight Derrick White is worth more, but at the time it seemed like a nice haul. Just making sure they get high upside stuff sprinkled in too, like the ‘28 BOS swap and ‘30 DAL swap. Most likely they won’t matter much, but you never know. Then they’ve kept their books clean. Keldon’s contract is good and descending, he’s not progressing as you’d like right now, but he still has potential and I think he will at least end up as a good rotation player. Even if he just ends up as a good 5th guy or even a 6th man, he’ll still be underpaid or fairly paid w the cap going up. And the Vassell contract is v solid. 5y, no player option, it’s structured perfectly for the TV deal kicking in in 25-26 and there likely being 10% raises for that year and the next couple at least…as well as when Wemby’s extension will be. As long as he stays healthy it’ll age very well. I’m curious what they’ll do this summer, especially with a good lotto pick coming and possibly another w TOR’s…as well as plenty of $. I’m a DET fan and it’s unfortunate to have incompetent ownership, one of the worst things possible bc they don’t get fired lol. Gotta give props to the front office there, Pop, RC, and obv the owner for letting the bball people do the bball stuff. I’ll still never forgive Horry for that shot in the Finals, and who knows what happens if DET drafts Bosh, Melo, or Wade…but it is what it is. Enjoy having a historically competent franchise, bc ever since Tom Gores bought DET it’s been awful. Hopefully the SAS owner keeps it as long as possible and has a good successor. GL.

The Duncan spurs dominated so many great players and limiting them Shaq Lebron Nash Dirk The only player to give them problems and have a winning record with 2 or more wins is Kobe. That’s insane how they could play Lebron and Shaq two players that’s top 10 all time. Duncan is a dawg I got him top 6/7 depends on the day lol

Spurs fan here since the mid 90s. Before I even knew who Tim Duncan was. God I am old. Funny thing is, I was a Spurs fan by accident. It was my freshman year in high school and my friend asked if I was a Spurs fan since I had a Spurs hat on. I was actually a Celtics fan first since it's the home team, but I told him yeah I'm a Spurs fan. Then the following season, we had the worst record in the NBA and got the 1st pick and it has been wonderful being a Spurs fan.

Some of it has just been dumb luck, David Robinson going down in 1997 only for the Spurs to land No. 1 pick Tim Duncan, and then last year just getting lucky with Victor Wembayana.

There have been so many teams to get luckier and have "better" talent but they just know how to win. Every championship has some luck with it.

The 2014 Spurs team is arguably one of the greatest finals teams in history. They didn't have the best players at each position but they knew how to play as a TEAM from the starting 5 down to the 12th man. They knew their role & did their jobs well. I would put money on them in any 7 games series vs ANY team in NBA finals history. 96 Bulls, KD & the big 3 Dubs, ANY of them. Sure one on one the Spurs would be at a deficit in talent but collectively they could beat ANY of them as long as they had that hunger for vengeance. Funny how teams boil down to their best player in these kind of theoreticals but i honestly do not believe any other finals teams in history played team ball better and could not outplay that Spurs TEAM in a best of 7 straight up.
