On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
If you prefer more up close and personal dogfights consider the IL-2 Sturmovik: Great Battle series and experience intense WWII aerial combat over famous battlefields such as Stalingrad, Moscow, Rhineland and Normandy. Fight in and against Russian, American, German, British warbirds such as the P-51 Mustang, P-47 Thunderbolt, Bf-109, FW-190, Spitfire, Hurricane and rugged IL-2 Sturmovik attack plane. You can also fly legendary SPADS, Fokkers and Camels in WWI dogfights over the trenches of WWI and discover your inner Red Baron! And all of this can be experienced in jaw dropping virtual reality!

Fun fact that small strut mounted propeller you see every time he looks to the right is an air driven pump to pressurize the fuel tank to ensure the engine wasn't fuel starved.

Love these WW1 dogfights - thanks GS. My Great Grandfather flew a Sopwith, was shot down over the sea, and survived by clinging to the sheared wooden propeller, until the Royal Navy fished him out a couple of hours later. My family still have the propeller mounted, with a plaque, on the wall. He started out in the RNAS (pre-RAF) as an officer on the early flying boats (seaplanes)- was also shot down over sea and mentioned in dispatches for rescuing other crew members from the resultant burning fuel slick, as they were repeatedly strafed in the water by 2 or 3 Fokkers (unfortunately 2 of the crew were killed). BTW, he survived the Great War - I remember going to his memorial service in the early 80s, when I was a kid.

@@Curtislow2 Thanks mate! My other Great Grandfather was a commander in the first ever tank battle in WW1. His photos were amazing (including picnics behind the lines and skinny dipping in a canal with Belgian nurses!). There were haunting photos of burnt out tanks of his in No Mans Land, but my favourite has to be a rank of his tanks, flawlessly parked in a line on the cobbles outside the cathedral in Cologne after Armistice. There was a lot more going on in WW1 than the cliches of films. Have a great and healthy Christmas break.

I don't know how well modelled these aircraft are, but the Camel was known for its extraordinary ability to flick turn to the right, due to engine torque. A lot of new pilots died trying to make simple turns until they learnt the inherently very unstable aircraft.

I was a glider pilot in real life when I was flying in this game (rise of flight). When I bought the camel I started my first flight at 2 km altitude. I just fell down all the way to the ground, from one spin into another. It's a really crazy plane to fly.

Oh, wow! Just saw the legendary 1984 interview. He was proud of the Camel, but he was most proud of the Harrier! (Sopwith named the Hawker company after his chief pilot!). That is some span over a life time right there!

I fly the Camel for real (and crashed it…then rebuilt it….) and enjoy IL-2 in the winter. That was very good flying from both pilots, and enjoyed the video. I’ll try and describe some differences from the real and my limited view. I have a bunch of the nastiness designed out of mine ( it’s an Airdrome Aeroplanes replica) It has less less engine torque ( although not as much as you might think), a thicker wing and better weight layout. It has the exact same dimensions and weight, so I keep some of the structure issues. All the gauges are original except the engine. I also have smaller differences like a narrow upper wing cutout and proper cockpit combing. Comparing il-2 and reality, pitch and yaw are similar, roll isn’t close. If you want roll, the barndoors mean you’re using 2hands and you better be strong. Landing and takeoff are crazy close to reality. Turn radius and rate are very close. Turn reversals are slower because of roll rate. I also don’t fly anywhere near its limits, so loops, rolls, snap turns etc I can’t comment. Also, visibility in reality is worse on the ground. Overall the IL-2 could be used as training aid although ground handling at a modern airport is much tougher with no breaks, a skid, and a bit of gust. Good fun, keep up the great videos. What caused the crash? Also, what is the ownership cost like on one of those? How often does it get inspected? How often do you fly it? I've been thinking of getting one (In a few years) but am unsure of whether i could really afford it or not

@@stephenhaliday1791 Lots to unpack. Pilot error caused accident. Wheels started to sink in soft ground and flipped. Ultralights in Canada don’t have a lot of rules, so up to you on inspections. Fly as often as the wind allows and I gain confidence. Entry price is $30-50k cdn but sky’s the limit and I’ve got a lot more than that in it. ( I ust bought an original compass for a $1,0000 that now needs refurbishment). Cost per hour is about $60. Don’t forget hangar and a trailer. You gotta love it go through it all but pull up a a flyin and it all seems worthwhile. Checkout videos on RU-vid or CISPWCamel on Instagram.

@@dequaviusvandinglusiii6168 On mine, aileron roll rate to the right is a bit faster but not much. On the original, I understand snap turns to the right are very fast and not feasible to the left. During combat, snap turns were preferred, but my flights are more leisurely, so I use the ailerons.

The Dr.1 is showing some cool hammer head stall attacks. Also, snap rolls as a defensive maneuver. Throw the stick all the way right while stomping on the right rudder and it will really roll fast. It’s like a spin in a horizontal direction. In the WWI era, aero engineers thought putting the center of gravity and the center of gravity at the same place was a good thing. This made the aircraft maneuverable but on the verge of departing control in pitch direction. Particularly the Camel. That made it a real handful, exhausting to fly. You couldn’t take your hands off the stick. It was described as trying to push a bicycle backwards, since that would be against the caster of the bicycle. Just a few years latter, they started to put the center of gravity ahead of the center of pressure and depend on a little down pressure from the stabilizer to hold the nose up. In modern jets, they can put the center of pressure even or ahead of the center of gravity to improve maneuverability and efficiency of turns because of fly by wire can control the instability.

@@ph2738 Sure, I understand the center of pressure as a dynamic force. Building scale RC aircraft I work with the CoG and CoL to tune the flight characteristics. I was just confused when you said, "engineers thought putting the center of gravity and the center of gravity at the same place" saying CoG twice. That is all.

The ironic thing is the gen 1, which your describe is now where gen 4++ are. Went from an era where we were understanding flight, to making them unstable with as much lift as possible to make them agile, to pistons with either as much speed or turning as possible, to first gen jet where it was about speed and interception. Gen 3 more speed and interception and understanding different wing characteristics such as delta, versus swept, and variable. To them now being so aerodynamic but yet unstable we need computers and fly by wire to because of how agile they can be. Now gen 5 stealth even more unstable platforms. Amazing how we came almost full circle.

If you want some sense of just how maneuverable and dangerous the DrI could be, research Werner Voss' last flight when flying solo, he managed to hold off (and put bullets into) several aces of 56 squadron before eventually falling to them.

He hit every single one of them. Two were "shot down", i.e. damaged so badly they had to leave the fight. There were 7 Britsh aces against one German ace. It was James McCudden who said that Voss was the bravest pilot he ever saw. Grüße aus Deutschland!

@@TheSoundsage no, Werner Voss was a noted acrobatic pilot, he would out-maneuver you to shoot you down, as opposed to going in hard and fast for the kill. McCudden as previously mentioned wrote a memior before his death, and stated that Voss was the best he'd gone up against (I'm para-phrasing here), what's important to note is that at the time Voss was flying his DR1 it was factory fresh, I.e it hadn't been re-worked to the pilots preference A lot of the Greats had modifications done to their aircraft in the field in an attempt to give them the upper edge

Featured on Dogfights, German ace Werner Voss took on over 7 British S.E.5s in one of those Triplanes. Its maneuverability was very shocking to British ace James McCudden, especially when Voss pulled off a quick flat turn to shoot at McCudden who was diving to attack him.

Makes me think of Ace Werner Voss's last fight, where he ended up solo in a Dr-1 versus 8 British aces in SE-5s in a swirling dogfight that lasted 8 minutes, and he managed to force two of them out of the fight.

My grandfather was in the Royal flying corp in WW1, sadly he was not a pilot , he was one of the ground crew who worked on Sopwith pups and camels , in his civilian life he was a cabinet maker and a skilled craftsman who did lots of work in churchs replacing and repairing the religious carvings in the churches , when he died in the early 1970s my late father and i were clearing out his barn and we found a complete top wing from a sopwith camel , struts and lots of the metal brackets that the bracing wires for the wings were attached to , at the time my father did not think any one would want them so he broke the wing up and took the lot to the local rubbish tip.

He's snap rolling it. Leads to super fast roll rate. Pull up hard, full rudder, the plane stalls, and snap drops a wing. It's the entry to a spin, but you recover before the spin. Did it in Cessna 152 on training area in my training. Awesome.

Only Richthofen's squadron was called the Flying Circus due to their crazy and bold paint jobs rather than using camouflage.

The Fokker Dr.1 is literally Su-35 of WW1 😱 Most respectful dogfight I have ever seen! Good fight GS ! Fly high !

Yes at the time, pilots observed a type of chivalry. Often referred to as Knights of the Air. The DR1 although a tri plane. The airfoil between the wings created a fourth wing helping with lift and maneuverability. WW1 German ace Bolke. Created the rules for dog fighting called the Dicta Bolke. Which is still today the base line for dog fighting. Love your videos. Keep flying and fighting.

Spent years playing flight sims. Purchased an Oculus last year. Using it took Il2 to a new level, like having your first HD Tv. Recently started playing the WW1 aircraft. They are awesome. Another step towards reality. All you need to complete the experience, is to have a fan blow in your face full blast, whilst someone throws Castor oil at you. Then punches you when you get hit.

The Dr. 1, though an excellent aircraft, did have build quality issues and more then one German pilot died when wing failure caused to it disintegrated in mid air. The Fokker Dr. 1 was inspired by Sopworth's Triplane. The Camels predecessor.

@@n.w.1803 they were flying so slow, the G’s weren’t that intense, that’s why they were able to do it so well. Light plane + low speed = low G’s.

@@Cybetrexs Well mass shouldn't alter the G forces in any way but it sure does affect the wing loading which is probably what you meant.

@@n.w.1803 Sorry I took awhile to catch up. I did a little bit more searching and discovered that the wing failure was due the poor quality of the construction by Fokker. Not only was there a problem with the construction of the aircraft but some parts were open to the elements which caused more problems with joints. It looks to me like Fokker or some within the company, were trying to get them built as quickly as possible and corners were cut. Possibly there was also pressure from the German airforce to get them to the front lines as soon as possible as well. The fact that the problems were with the attachment of the top wing and it was taking the most stress from G force just made things worse.

I have always loved the DR1 Triplane. The iconic machine of the Red Baron. Such a cool fighter aircraft.

"I'm working on that... I'm working on that....", I'm sure all of us that have gotten into a touch of trouble that close to the ground flying the fabulously finicky Camel has uttered those very words... I know I have.... and sometimes they were the last words of that flight.
