A Gentleman's London follows The Rake's Editor-in-chief, Tom Chamberlin, on a journey of the great heritage brands and gentlemen’s destinations in Mayfair and St. James. In the inaugural episode, we peel back the curtain on Emma Willis, the eminent Jermyn Street shirtmaker that has become a pillar of classic British style.

Have been buying The Rake magazine here in the US for about six years now. It is the classiest men's magazine that I have ever purchased. I'm enjoying this series on London life. It's 100% class.

I went to one of Emma’s fundraising events for injured troops : hats off to her for realising how getting these young guys into smart clothing that makes them feel good about themselves helps rebuild their confidence.

I've had the pleasure of meeting Emma a few times over the years, not only is she a successful businesswoman (it's no mean feat to make shirts in the U.K. and sell them profitably), she's a lovely person as well.

Yes the shirt collar is important in that it frames the face and that it should rest inside the jacket lapel. This will be a great series and I like the music chosen. How wonderful that Ms. Willis shows appreciation for our military veterans.

What an excellent start to the Gentleman's London series Tom. Emma is such a humble person, with such talent, and caring attitude. You did a good job too.

Thank you for your tips on shirts. I work two physical jobs so it is hard to go straight to suit and tie, however I do recently enjoy putting on a nice dress shirt and trousers to be a few notches up the sartorial ladder but not to the point where the flip over is night and day. I do love the English country look even in the city, it is just more classy than we in Canada would call country wear. Enjoying this series.

This is a great idea which i suspect will find its greatest audience among those who wish we could make it to London but can't. I haven't been able to find the Rake in Australia for over a year now!

They have been having distribution issues I believe. This is coming from change in ownership etc. They're working on it however.. fingers crossed, as I'm in Sydney and miss the frequency!

Loved this! Emma is amazing. Not just for making beautiful shirts but also for her generous contributions towards all those soldiers of war. Just outstanding! That really propels me too to want to buy from her. Thank you for this brilliant video. Love The Rake by the way. Great magazine! Cheers! 🍸🍷🍺

Fantastic really looking forward to watching your channel, Tom. Emma makes the most wonderful shirts, I always asked if I make shirts but I say if you want a shirt go to a dedicated shirt maker like Emma. I love stirpe shirts especially pink and white as I wear a lot of brown shades and tones.

1 white shirt 2. pale yellow. 3. light/pale blue.4. pale green. 5. pale pink. These are what you need to change your style daily. The shirt is the canvass. What you put on it or around it is your art. I will only buy shirts that are french cuff for obvious reasons and I always have a collar bar or clip. There should be no space between your collar and your suit coat. Also tie the proper knot for the collar you wear. But what do I know?

I love these series. I'm a short (5'9) and stocky (108kg) rugby player. I'd love to know more about how to dress smartly in the summer. I think its time I stop looking like my mum dressed in me clothes "I'd grow into".

With respect, patterns rarely go well next to other patterns as they tend to clash rather than complement each other. If the scale or contrast of one pattern is very different to the other then it can work but it's not something for the beginner.
@maryjones5710
@maryjones5710 2 месяца назад
The kind of patterns Tom would referencing would be barely visible from a small distance. It is not until you are quite close that you can see the delicate patterning in some suits. We re not talking 1800's checkered suits found at a racetrack, maybe. A gentleman is never, ever 'loud'.

Really enjoyed the conversation, never heard of the shirt maker before. Also could listen to the hosts (posh) way of speaking all day. One thing I’d suggest to production, look into improving your lighting indoors. Host looked so noisy and like in front of a green screen. Harsh top light on Emma didn’t flatter either.

I have just discovered your channel. Very nice presentation. I too detest the cutaway collar! I cannot stand people wearing a dress shirt and a suit WITHOUT a tie! I remember a funny and nice, old-fashioned English expression that applies on this occasion: "That´s not cricket!" Regards from Italy.

The Shirt, if worn like you are wearing is essentially an underwear, you only have to get the collars and the cuffs right. Which historically were not even attached to the shirt itself. So how is it so important.

Seems a bit of an odd comment to me. The shirts are available to be shipped, and they can cost more than a plane ticket to London. If one is interested in these shirts, then one has the means to travel to get one.
