A ghost town in the hills: Silver City, Idaho

Silver City, Idaho is packed with history. This mining town in the mountains was founded in the 1860's with the boom and bust of valuable gold and silver mines. The peak population reached approximately 2500 people before almost dropping to zero after WWII. It never truly was abandoned and I use the term 'ghost town' loosely here, because although it felt like a ghost town when we visited, there are some year-round residents. All buildings are privately owned and today the hotel is open in the summer to serve tourists who wander up into the hills. Join us as we step back in time at Silver City.

NOTE: The owner of the building at 4:37 contacted me concerned that I trespassed. To clarify, I did not enter any building in Silver City. My aim with the shot of the door handle was to document the ornate, intricate, beautiful details of the door handle, and the capture that classic metallic sound. All buildings in Silver City are private property. DO NOT ENTER. Hope this is clear.

Glad you guys were able to make it to Silver City! I've been there a handful of times over the years and its always a really cool spot. Last time I was there the place was completely infested with Mormon Crickets.

I have been to Silver City many times. You didn't see or show the millions of oyster shells behind the Restaurant/Bar. The Minors loved their Oysters.

I would have loved to go inside the buildings and see all the interesting artifacts, but everything was still locked up from the winter.

Thanks for the vid, Luke. The town reminds me of Sandon, (Kootenays) which you have likely visited, on the main highway to Kaslo. Hard to imagine the thousands of folks who toiled in such places before vanishing in time and other places,

now then. I really like this channel and the wonderful photography. However, I am astonished that you drive a Dodge Ram and you parked it instead of driving through the small amount of slushy snow to the deserted town. Please tell me what vehicle would be more capable than a Dodge Ram for that 2 and a half miles of minimal snow and slush? What is it with people from North America and challenges????????
