I love it when people do stuff like this. Although, there are certain circumstances after introduction of an invasive species where we need to eliminate species from areas to help the environment.

They have that flap and these wrinkles on their side so they can absorb oxygen out of the surrounding water more efficiently, because it enlarges their surface area. They are giant salamanders and therefore need more oxygen than smaller salamanders. It's great you are trying to help them! They need protection
