Gravel rooftops are not an ideal habitat for nesting sea and shorebirds, but serve as an alternative for birds crowded off beaches by recreational uses. A solar-powered camera installed on an active rooftop in Pinellas County provided an amazing glimpse into the struggles and successes of one American Oystercatcher family.
Our rooftop biologist Kara Cook estimated five American Oystercatcher chicks fledged from rooftops this season. Fish Crows are the biggest predators of rooftop nesters' eggs and chicks.
