Excellent, outstanding interview with a true legend of Saffer rugby. And yes, as a life-long Transvaal/Lions supporter I can attest to the greatness of that Rooibont team of the 90s. The Lions went through another excellent spell when Johan Ackermann was the coach and Warren Whiteley the captain. Let's hope the Lions, as a union, will soon be tops of the pops again. Cheers Peter and Kobus!
Thank you, Wouter. So happy you enjoyed this chat! I lived in Johannesburg for eight years so the Lions are my second side. I was actually there during that Ackermann-Whiteley era. It was very exciting times at Ellis Park. Hopefully they will rise again.
Enjoyed the respect he shown when talking about Tiaan, interesting that Japie Mulder also showed that and that Tiaan's name come up more than most. Maybe I hear what I want to hear 😂
Really entertaining ..Remenber Kobus coming on for Boks during second half against All Blacks ( them on point winning 1st SA series). He outmuscled and rocked those AB forwards, all facets of forward play improved..It was like a locomotive at full steam.. One man bomb squad.. Not his fault we lost..
Hi Peter, you were 100% correct when I saw that Kobus was this week’s guest. I facepalmed coz it was so obvious. I am in agreement with Kobus there is something special about the Currie Cup. One forgets how old Kobus is he gives off such young vibes. I really enjoyed this interview. Kobus has a great sense of humour. Yet again Harry Viljoen comes across more Armani than Adidas 🤣 Hope the family is well and baby Stemmet is adapting to life on the outside.
I'm so pleased you enjoyed this one and great to see you in the comments section as always! Kobus was great and I love how he loves to laugh! The 1997, 2000 and 2001 Currie Cup victories will always be very special to me - especially the 97 and 01 wins. For some strange reason I wasn't that into the 2000 season. Can't remember why but maybe I was part of a bad crowd that year! Harry ... Armani ... Always! Baby Stemmet and the family are doing well. Thank you!!
@@frontrowrugby 00/01 I practically lived at Newlands. It was the best of times. Back then the Grand Stand behind the reserve bench was standing only. The atmosphere was electric. Corne Krige was captain courageous, de wet Barry was a tackling machine and I think most of Cape Townian ladies had a crush on Monty. I was a HUGE Badenhorst fan. I thought he was a criminally underrated 8. Also had a great front row Visagie, Marais and Kempson. 2000 always brought us the 30th win. Have I changed your mind yet? 01 final was played at home and supposed that’s why you preferred it. Glad to hear that clan Stemmet are doing well.
Dream scenario - practically living there! I remember that standing area quite well because the first time I watched a match at Newlands, that's where I was ... standing! It was just after the 1995 World Cup, Province were playing Natal (not yet the Sharks) and Chester scored a last-minute winning try in the corner! The place erupted! Oh I am aware of what happened in 2000 it's just that for some strange reason I was less interested that year. As I say, maybe I had a bad friends circle that year.
@@frontrowrugby I think it’s how I feel about the URC this year 🤣just not really feeling it yet. I am still trying to get used to the schelp to Cape Town Stadium I think. Well to be fair we played in Stellies and then buggered off on tour. Perhaps I will feel it once the Stormers are home again. 🤷🏻♀️
Ah yes, my challenge with the URC this year has been the kick off times and the new baby not really being compatible. So those really late games, of which the Stormers have been involved in a few, I've missed out.
He got his stats wrong, Transvaal played in the CC final from 1991-1994 = 4 years and he was on the bench in 1991, coming on as as sub for Deon Lötter!
@@frontrowrugby Not that long ago, it is past the 1980's 😅 Kobus is a good guy, played for Boland and Western Transvaal before hitting the big time - at Transvaal.
Ek was by die 1990 en 1991 CC finale gewees. 1990 as skoolkind in die tente gewerk, was beter om nie te sien nie. 1991, as student, was die finaal baie beter:)
