Couldn't find a version of this story with southern accents so I took my shot at it. Hope you enjoy and take something away from this story.
From Wikipedia:
The story was first published in 1953 in the anthology The Avon Book of Modern Writing.[1] In 1960, it was collected in the anthology The House of Fiction, published by Charles Scribner's Sons. Because of its publication in many anthologies, "A Good Man Is Hard to Find" became one of O'Connor's best known works.[2]

Lovely job with the southern accent - especially Grandma 👵
2 года назад
Probably the best American short story ever. The genius of the conclusion is mesmerizing. Flannery packed so much subtext into the exchange between the grandmother and the Misfit. The grandmother's hypocrisy, self-entitlement and futility made clear by a touch comparable to a snake's bite. She never had a clue about life and about the things she pretended to care the most. Ended up taking her emptiness to unbearable proportions by her last gesture. Total wooden faced religious dissimulation. Shot on spot. Hate that lady. The age dynamics and social and cultural gap are perfectly investigated during the whole family's ordeal. Misfit killed a baby. That's terribly grimy. The family was unequipped in every aspect to deal with the darkness of life outside their illusory place of comfort and security. Great thing Flannery achieved by making the Misfit utterly unlikeable. Not a romantized anti-hero. A full blown monster, despite his efforts to believe and portray himself as a decent man. Only someone as stupid as the lady would identify with him. That's the ultimate tragedy of the tale. A complete existencial tragedy. Love it.

I enjoyed your reading of this short. I'm here because I am currently reading Dean Koontz's book Relentless and the main character mentions he is reading it, so as is my habit I did a side read/listen to get a full idea of the Koontz character.

At 6:23 the grandmother referred to a little boy in a doorway of a check as a pickaninny. I immediately thought of my birth mother. Especially when she said about him not having pants that he probably didn't have any. I was giving my birth mother a ride and a black man was riding his bicycle. This was in Florida LOL she said look at that n word riding a bike he probably stole the f****** thing. My birth mother was a Prejudice piece of s***! My therapist learned all about her. SMH. It's as if the author knew her!

@liv1039 2 года назад
@@sawm4139 you commented on this post a year ago and people disagreed yet you are clearly so offended that you’re still trying to argue to make a point the majority of people will still not agree with. If you dislike the use of the word, find a censored version of the audio. No one is stopping you from that. I’m sorry - but I think it’s just ridiculous to censor the story for the sake of a few peoples feelings. We need to accept that history was very different. We can’t pretend the word didn’t exist. I understand you don’t like it, but as you clearly can tell by the rebuttals on your comment, most people disagree with the censorship of literature. In the nicest way possible.. please get over it already.

Yeah. It's integral to the story. People would rather strip a critique of it's meaning and power to fit in current cultural conformity. This tale is art. The use of the word is an important part of the the portray of this horrible lady.
