Made my first on the air CW QSO with my mentor yesterday. It wasn't pretty, but it worked. I have got to get __much__ better at instant recognition. Head copy was a no-go, but I'm encouraged, not discouraged. I could have been much worse. 😂 You're among my few heros, Thomas; what a pileup! 73, de AI7UQ

Amazing work!!!! I'm so happy to hear this. Welcoming to a most rewarding aspect of our ham radio world. I find CW to be so much more than a mode...it will have a positive impact across all of your radio work. Keep it up and I hope to have a QSO with you in the near future! All the best, Thomas (K4SWL)

OK, Tom, hope it went through on your end to get the commission. I thought the shipping charge was high, but when I compared to DXEngineering with free shipping, that outlet was still higher than the Chelegance price with $62 shipping, so I got it through your link. You were so impressed "in person" and I saw the results on your video, that I went to a generally unused "savings" account debit card and bought it without waiting for a full piggy bank. Hope it works half as well as you demonstrated. Thanks for the recommendation, I'm sure I will enjoy it and maybe run into you someday on the air using it! TU agn, KA8VLW, Ken, Michigan

Maybe some feed back messing with transceiver? place a choke next to your transceiver possably, I know my 817 is sensitive to stray RF. Took a while to put up that antenna, but seems to work pretty well for a loaded dipole. Good video.

It was fun to hear myself! (Very near the end.) I had tried 20 Hz (0.o2 kHz) off zero beat, but I couldn't hear it in the video. I'll have to try 50 Hz next time. I carry orange and yellow two tone paracord to guy with, for visibility's sake. I was running 90W, so I'll say 73 rather than 72 - Bill - KE1G

Hi Thomas, just a thought re the tripod, might be worth laying the guying lines out first and attaching them whilst setting up the tripod same when taking it down, looks like there could be a reasonable amount of weight on top with the elements fully extended would hate to see the whole thing topple over in a gust of wind and break the telescopic whips.
@ThomasK4SWL
@ThomasK4SWL 5 месяцев назад
I will try that next time. Good point!

@ThomasK4SWL 5 месяцев назад
It's this one from ABR: abrind.com/shop/qrp-pota-portable-cables/abr240-uf-with-pl259-with-5-ferrites/?sld=twitherspoon Note that QRPer is an affiliate with ABR, so this is an affiliate link. Also, you can use the coupon code "ABR10QRPER" and save 10%. Their cable assemblies aren't the cheapest, but they are the best in terms of quality. I have never had one fail me. Also, a superb company overall.

How high was the feedpoint of that antenna? Looked like maybe 15 ft to me, and that's pretty low for use on 20 m. David VE7EZM and AF7BZ

Yeah, it's not ideal, but it's manageable in the field.

How does this antenna compare to the MPAS 2.0? Could the MC599 be left outside for any length of time?
@ThomasK4SWL
@ThomasK4SWL 5 месяцев назад
This might be a question for Chelegance regarding the length of time outside--I should think it would hold up, but would need sealant around the connector. I think the main difference with the MPAS 2.0 would simply be the performance characteristics between a vertical and dipole, also where it's deployed (on the beach, on a mountain, in a valley). In this particular case, I feel the dipole offers better DX possibilities in a valley. Then again, I could be wrong about that since I'm working on only one outing with it.

Its funny when this happens. Just like in this video, you're setting up your antenna or you're operating and someone asks, "what is all this?" or something to that effect. You say you're a ham radio/amateur radio operator or something to that effect and they immediately start glazingng over. They'll say something trivial like "that's interesting" or "looks like fun" then start walking away not knowing any more then than at the time before they asked.
