Hey, it'a small world and everything. I was on the small team that helped Sergio for the original GPL track back in 2004, mostly doing textures on the left side of the track and the AI. I went by "Rocket 3" in the credits. It's really spooky after 16 years to see the track still being raced.

Excellent video. Minor note on Giuseppe Farina , he was the first world champion of the then new Formula 1 in 1950. Of note the Alfetta 158 he drove to victory in the 1940 Tripoli race was the same type of vehicle he drove to victory for the 1950 F1 world championship.
Technically it is the same model, but the 158 had undergone a lot of mods from its original guise in 1938 to when it appeared at Silverstone for the inaugural Formula One World Championship. And its evolution isn't over yet, with Alfa Romeo churning out the 159 at the 1950 Italian GP, which later morphed into the 159 "M" at the next year's Italian GP. I had some knowledge about it because at the moment, I'm talking to someone who is currently making the 1951 F1 World Championship mod for rFactor... about the secret and confusing world of the 159 "Alfetta"... I'm trying to help research anything of note on the cars...
@@jcgabriel1569 To split hairs even further, the inaugural race of the FIA Formula 1 Championship was in 1981. Before that it was the FIA World Championship for Drivers (1950-80).
@@jcgabriel1569 indeed, the Alfetta has an amazing story behind it. I am very interested in the 1951 Rfactor Mod. A book called 'Classic Racing Engines' by Karl Ludvigsen has a chapter dedicated to the Alfetta 158/9 engine with highly detailed description and history. If you can find it, that may help in your search for data.
@@danielsquillace5291 I have just read the book Alfetta by Ed Mcdonough, well, just the last chapters that talks about the 1951 season, which is the season we needed to research for the mod. What it actually confirmed is the fact that the specifications of the individual 159s as used during the season varied, with differences to the bodywork, fuel tanks, and there's even one with the De Dion rear axle. And this is before the definitive 159 "M" came out for the Italian GP. But what their specifications are exactly is very hard to know, and unlike in other teams, the drivers don't have a steady "mount", that is, a particular car they preferred to use for most, if not the whole, season (which could've made things slightly easier). The drivers and the team itself tend to change the allotment of the cars even at the last moment. And then, there's the secrecy. Alfa Corse is always secretive about the cars' real specifications back in those days. Probably one main reason why they never put them up for sale in period is to prevent others from knowing their secrets. And the ever-improving performance of Ferrari's 375 made things in this area of research even worse, since they started to get even more secretive, they didn't want to give anything of use away that would allow Ferrari to make appropriate countermeasures. There were even rumours, that serve to mislead the opposition even further... For example, the cars that debuted at the 1951 Italian GP is called the 159 "M", the "M" stands for "Maggiorata" or "enlarged". But, apart from the more obvious changes the new car had, like the fact that all four cars had De Dion rear axle, and fatter bodywork and tail for all those auxiliary fuel tanks, we had no clear idea of what else is "enlarged" or "improved" in the cars. Maybe they did some more improvement in some more areas like the engine, but they didn't tell, because they don't want Ferrari knowing about it. Or maybe, they didn't do much else, but didn't tell it, to keep Ferrari guessing. In short, researching for the 159 Alfettas, in their final WC season, is equal parts interesting and frustrating...
@@danielsquillace5291 As for the 1951 mod, I could tell you that the Ferraris (works 375, Thin Wall, Peter Whitehead's 125), HWM, Gordini, 4CLT/48 Maserati, and Prince Bira's V12 Maserati-OSCA is more or less complete, and the Talbot Lagos and the Alfettas were getting some rework... Oh, yeah, the BRM's also finished...
Technically the track did exist. But that is a long time ago. After the war, Italy lost Libya, and motor racing never returned to the Mellaha circuit. And if I remember correctly, during the reign of Muammar Gaddafi, the little airfield situated on the inside of the tracks was greatly enlarged and turned into a military airbase, destroying several portions of the track and its facilities.

Yeah it is an odd view system! I mentioned in the video that it was a highly debated ‘feature’ of this mod when it came out. There are some patches to easily remove it but I thought id leave it in for atleast one video since it is kind of fun to watch! Maybe not for the weak of stomach though
weirdest view I ever saw lol. Yea its typical for rFactor to have weird views anyway... but this tops it all lol :D... they had the first shaking cockpit like if you have a bent axel or something at high speed from the start.
I'm curious to understand what's giving you so much interest for the older eras of F1. usually people (myself included) are more into the 80s/90s/00s because it's the era we were children. it's refreshing to see this and you are very good in convey your passion through your videos.
I'm not GPLaps but for me, It is because I love history, and being able to recreate those "long-forgotten" races in simulators like rFactor and Assetto Corsa is an incredible experience. Don't get me wrong, I really like the 80s and 90s (especially due to Ayrton Senna, my favorite driver) but racing things from the 30s and 20s is amazing.
Yeah, I feel the same: while the 80s-00s are my era, I definitely have an interest in history and love looking at a more complete timeline. There's a fascination of long lost lore that appeals so much. Not only that, but this kind of racing offers a completely different experience that modern racing doesn't have, it's so much more primitive and agricultural.
The Tripoli lottery was not really a betting system but just... a lottery :). The organisers drew ticket serial numbers among those sold to the spectators on race day, assigning one spectator to each starter. The spectator would then share the eventual prize money with "his" driver. Quite a popular thing in those days. The most famous of such events was the Gran Premio Lotteria in Monza, which was held for F2, F3, F5000, Sportscars and other categories over the years and lasted until the late 1980s/early 1990s.
There are so many interesting races/events you could have on a big online race, but people seem rather obsessed with GT3 or something. I'm glad your channel pays attention to the forgotten eras of racing

I'm disappointed there's so little footage of this track. There's some video footage of the main straight and some corners but nowhere near enough to get an overall impression of what it was like.
I'm like that with the Targa Florio. So many snippets from the regular village sections. Even some pieces of onboard....so there must be at least the majority of a lap if someone thought to put a camera in the car....
@@csykes23 There is some onboard footage. But more importantly, the course is still there and mostly the same. The entire course of Tripoli is gone, all of it.

AFAIR Mercedes built two special cars just for this race in 1939. The Italians had restricted the engine size to 1.5 litres to keep the Germans away, but Mercedes showed them that couldn't stop their cars and built two specials just for the Tripoli race. In 1940 the race was held again. Germany was otherwise engaged so this time the Italians got the victory they craved.
1-2 finish...Lang's average speed at the end was 10-12 mph faster than the last year's, and he had to back off to avoid lapping his teammate, Caracciola!
Thing is, there's one thing that played a role in Mercedes winning. And that is, the Alfetta's cooling system... The weather on the sessions worried the Alfa Romeo team manager for that race, former Bugatti team manager Bartolomeo Constantini (former racer as well), thinking that the heat, plus the strain on a longer distance on race day might just overpressurize the Alfetta's cooling system and cause hoses to burst or something, so he ordered them to lower the cooling system pressure, which turns out to be the wrong move. All the cars suffered a bad case of overheating, and only one finished the race. Though it seems that there's actually something wrong with the cooling system of the Alfettas back then anyway...
I think this was one of the tracks in the ill fated Spirit of Speed 1937 game (hard to call it a sim it was that bad….), and I found it really challenging! Great video, will see if it’s available for Asseto Corsa!
My favorite thing is that the Italians changed the formula after the 3.0L Mercedes’ cars domination. They changed the formula to a 1.5L spec, which was more common for Italian cars at the time. “Aha! We got the Germans!” they said. Mercedes does what Mercedes does and built a 1.5L car for the race and won with it.
It doesn't remotely look like the view is moving back and forth, but rather the front axle. You can tell it's a quick and dirty solution mapped to your steering input.
The Best story is still how they tried to rig the race again in 1939 by Changing the rules for entry to 1.5 ltr cars in an attempt to give Italy a win . thinking both Auto union and Mercedes would not bother or have time enough to build a new car. but has we know Mercedes did such a thing two completely new cars and Mercedes first attempt at a V8 supercharged engine that could even rev up to 9000 RPM all that in 8 months , imagine that happening these days , and without the aid of computers to speed the process up. one of the most amazing feats in motorsport history.
In a way, the Italians eventually got the last laugh... I read somewhere that Mercedes Benz actually entertained the idea of racing in Formula 1 in 1951. And to that effect, they plan on making a number of new and improved versions of the W165s to take on the likes of Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, BRM, and others... They eventually abandoned it after realizing that even with all the improvements, the updated W165 won't be able to match the power output of the Alfa Romeo 159, which is practically the same car they beat at Tripoli in 1939...
Nuvolari won in 1928, but the race is held on a circuit different from this one, back then it is held on the Tagiura Circuit, a relatively fast and big road circuit (around 26km). Nuvolari's best result in the Tripoli GP held in Mellaha Circuit (the ones used here) is 2nd in 1933, the first time they used this track.
Actually I'm very surprised how well the AI performed. I tried to do some rFactor 1 racing some time ago and they were completely mental. Before the end of a race they were all dead :D Although that was a 1990 F1 mod, perhaps the rFactor AI can't handle cars like that.
Yes, he did. He started racing in the early 1930s, but really got into it racing the Voiturette Formula cars (pre-war equivalent of Formula 2) in 1934.
Ok, I just heard your speak on the winners, there that time and Nuvolari actually seems not to have participated in Tripoli, maybe cause of like you said about the difficulty of getting there for a lot of teams, so.. But other than that, he was quite on his top that time and he won the Milan GP that year.
Nuvolari did race at Tripoli, but he's not that successful there because of some bad luck. In the 1937 race, for example, the 12C-37 Alfa Romeo is just not fast enough...
@@Villoresi Nuvolari's rather relieved when the car gave up. Even he knew that at that race, there's no way his car could win. The new W125 Mercedes and the Auto Union type C could trade punches at 200mph, his car could probably only do up to 180, in a pinch.
Also, 1937 is a pretty rotten year for Nuvolari. Not only was his car woefully uncompetitive, on the personal side, his eldest son, Giorgio, also died that year...

This was the atmosphere Bernie Ecclestone and F1 tried to capture when they anounced the Bahrain GP. In the end, as is the norm in the uptight era that we live in, we got another blant and boring Tilke-drome.
Honestly, I'd think the Auto Union would be the trickiest to drive. It has less power than the Merc, but more interesting handling due to that massive V16 behind the driver. Arguably, the Alfa Romeo had the best chassis, but just lacked the ponies. There's just something about those vintage circuits of the "8-Mile Club": Tripoli Old Spa Classic Le Mans Lobethal Tre Fontane (Roma) Obviously, there aren't any ultra-slow corners here, or else the lap average for Pole in 1937 couldn't have been north of 145 mph. The 1938 race here was infamous for them trying to run the GP cars and Voiturettes together, a contributing factor in 2 fatal crashes during that race. Tires were the limiting factor here, but even then, it was usually just a 1-2-stop strategy at Tripoli. You have to remember, these cars could be carrying 80-120 gallons of dope fuel. Even after the War, at least up through 1955, cars at Le Mans carried enough onboard to do about 2.5 hours at that circuit. And when Swede Savage crashed at Indy in 1973, I think those cars could carry 75 gallons with a full load. I definitely would like to see a new rendering for this circuit. As for the cars, I wish we could get an actual Alfa Romeo 12C-37, with more power, a new chassis, and improved aero, to have something that much closer to the German cars. And though not exactly historically accurate, I wouldn't mind the Maserati 8CTF being thrown in with these cars to give something else fairly quick, and from another, different manufacturer.
Tires were pretty crucial for Tripoli, a combination of the tire technology of the time, the normally hot weather, and the speeds achieved every lap, could take a huge toll on tires, and one stop too many could cost the win. I think the 1938-39 3 litre formula is a good candidate, the engine capacity limit somehow "strangled" the Germans, and gave the others a (slight) hope in keeping up with them. Though my favourite year is the 1935 season, the last time the "old world designs" could still mix it with the cutting edge designs from Germany.
Great video, and a very interesting mod. Have to say that I absolutely hate the way the head movement is implemented though. It looks like the car is articulated, with the front wheels and engine as the tractor unit, and the cockpit and rear wheels as the trailer. The mod makes the nose of the car and the front wheels move around from the driver's perspective. What should be happening IMO is that the windscreen, instrument panel, steering wheel and cockpit sides should be moving around a lot, while the nose of the car and the front wheels stay almost static. The modder's got the right idea, but it's implemented at the wrong part of the car, way too far forward.
Ah, yes, the good ol' 1937 mod for rFactor. I'm technically "weaned" into racing those older cars in rFactor by that mod. But since I use a keyboard to drive it, I found myself mostly relegated to the junior "Voiturette" Formula, mostly behind the wheel of the Maserati 6CM. Sometimes I'd use the Alfa Romeo Tipo C 12C-36 for the GP class, and a little bit of the Auto Unions, but really really rare to drive the W125, because, in a keyboard, unless you hook it up to 3rd or 4th gear straight away, you'll just keep on spinning the W125 around. Probably the bravest effort I did in the W125 is to drive it up a hillclimb course, the back sliding out the moment you touch the throttle, but since the road is twisty and narrow, you don't really want that...
Please do the 1919 or 1909 Grand Prix seasons! Your videos are so immersive to the time periods I really do get a sense of the speed and skill it took to handle such unrefined beasts. I would love to see that bit of history especially how dangerous it was.

During the Bathurst 12 Hour yesterday we were slammed like a brick that every one of the top 4 manufacturers were a German manufacturer. Those car built and designed in Germany are without a doubt a step above the rest even if they get over BOPd with ballast or engine power reduction.

I.dont think you need any knowledge in psysics to understand how impossible had to be to take curves fast with that insanely huge engine carried by those bicycle tires.
