I was wondering about loan-words from French. Isn't "thank you" the same as French--"Merci" (pronounced slightly differently)

Are the actors and actresses' Iranian accents accurate, mostly? What of Tamar's accent?

Not hyperbole, I think she's the best actress in history. She gets overshadowed a little by Meryl Streep or Jodie Foster who are great in their own right but I've never seen a Glenn Close performance where she doesn't absolutely nail it.

Meh, it's the director's choice: if an actor can inhabit the role and convey that character to the audience then.....they can play the role.

I haven't seen the show, but several people have commented that she is playing a Brit, not an ethnic Iranian. Also, isn't that what Glen herself indicated when she described the scene?

Fitzgerald has translated them very freely, but while translating a classic poem into another classic poem, most of the time you have no other option. He has done a great job, and some English language scholars even go as far as to say that his translation is the 2nd best of all time just behind King James Bible. Keep in mind that Khayyam, the great scientist and probably agnostic man that he was, said this mostly "heretic" peoms in a very, VERY religious environment, in which you could be easily executed for your beliefs. A fact that unfortunately has barely changed, as I myself have passed some time in prison for being an outspoken atheist. But at least I know I won't be brutally executed by the state or killed by a mob, just for having different opinions, hopefully. Time and time again I read Khayyam, and I'm truly baffled by how great his poems are. I can read almost all of them just from memory. I wish you the best of luck Ana.

@@extrapolate the creators did their best to give the audience a real vision of Tehran... for the first time a movie has made about Iran that shows everything correctly...more than 90 percent of the fact about how the people live the life in Iran and how the regime is look like is true. ignore that madafuka I'm a Persian from the inside of Iran... it's again the regime not the people of my country

I feel she did a pretty good job! Her accent sounded like some afghan friends I have who speak a slightly different of Farsi in Iran. Although the word she said in Farsi to Stephen means more like cute/charming, rather than funny I think 🥰

Anyone, from any country, who thinks nuclear programs **weren't** (also) about nukes is very naive.

I realize you might not appreciate seeing your nuclear program as bomb-seeking - but that is exactly what it is. This has been shown many times, in many ways. Including a few years ago when Mossad agents broke into a Tehran warehouse and literally stole a thousand pounds worth of documents (paper and CD) from Iran's national nuclear archive. They succeeded in getting it out of the country, and the Israeli government subsequently shared and published the results. Google it. there are tons of articles about this in every reputable source. I tried including a link here, but my post got deleted. New York Times has a July 15, 2018 piece called: "How Israel, in Dark of Night, Torched Its Way to Iran’s Nuclear Secrets". At first, Iran's government tried to deny that there even was such an archive, and claimed that Mossad fabricated everything. But in 2021, as he was leaving office, Iran's president Rouhani admitted and confirmed that Israel did indeed steal secrets and documents from the archive. *** HOWEVER, regarding the Israeli series Tehran (now with Glenn Close in second season) - if you haven't already seen it, you might be considerably surprised by the tone and content. Despite the fact that it's about an Israeli mission to destroy Iranian nuclear facilities, it's not at all like typical American good guys vs bad guys movies and shows. The story, and all the characters, are very well-developed, not one-dimensional stereotypes. It's a fantastic show, and it also won the 2021 International Emmy for Best Drama.

Israel and iran used to be great friends, as you may know. until the Iranian revolution brought the new regime in in 1979. there is no reason why the two nations/peoples cannot be friends again in the future. we should all hope for that.

@@mahdigholamirad2067 you wanna compare the number of kids killed by Israel vs iran? around 700,000 people have been killed just in syria in the last 10 years. that number includes lots of kids and their mothers. plus many millions of refugees have been created. and iran is partly responsible for that, together with the Syrian regime and later also Russia and Turkey. how many kids' deaths is iran responsible for by arming rebels in Yemen?? and let's not forget - Iran's rulers sent tens of thousands of their own children to die by clearing Iraqi minefields with their bodies during that war. Israel does kill kids sometimes - but not by design. it is well-documented, despite propaganda to the contrary, that Israel makes the most strenuous efforts to avoid killing innocent people, which of course includes children. for example, in the last gaza war, there are many videos online where you can see and hear the Israeli military calling a building in gaza which has been targeted for destruction. you can see and hear the Super of the building talking to the army. in one video I saw, made either by a journalist or another Palestinian, the Super is out on the street, talking to the army by phone. you can hear the army telling the super to get everyone out of the building. what's sort of shocking is that despite the extreme nature of such a conversation, it is being conducted very calmly by both sides. the soldier on the phone asks the Super, so how long do you need to get everyone out? is 2 or 3 hours enough? and the conversation goes on. you should try to find some examples. it's pretty amazing actually. obviously it's still traumatic for the people in those buildings! but the point is, hamas uses their own innocent people as human shields. Israel did not target buildings randomly (unlike what Russia is doing in Ukraine). if they destroyed a building, it's because hamas was using it for weapons despite regular people living there. another video is from the cockpit of an Israeli plane on a bombing mission in gaza. you can see video of the ground, and something moving like a child being detected in the vicinity of the target. you can hear the pilot notify mission control, you can hear their conversation, and you can hear them cancel the mission because of the kid. it doesn't help Israel to kill people unnecessarily, just the opposite! it just creates more hate (which would be justified). but hamas brings busloads of people to picnic near the fence on the gaza border, so there are violent demonstrations together with kids and cotton candy sellers. for hamas, it's great whenever kids get killed because it makes the world hate Israel, so they put them in harm's way on purpose. and if you want to talk about territorial integrity - between Israel and iran, only one talks about wiping the other off the face of the earth. (hint: it's not Israel)

that is very true, what you say. unfortunately the current regime is fixated on two things that that cannot be allowed to happen: they want nuclear weapons, and they want to eliminate the nation of Israel. Israel and iran used to be great friends, as you may know. until the Iranian revolution brought the new regime in in 1979. there is no reason why the two peoples cannot be friends again in the future.

For English speakers, the language is indeed called “Persian.” If speaking in native Persian, yes, you would pronounce it “Farsi.”

What do you mean? I think the series does a good job portraying the very complex reality of a very brutal regime that at the end of the day is made up by regular people that just want to live their lives, like the Iranian people.

You should watch the show. Tehran is nothing like 300. 300 portrayed Iranians as a bunch of evil savages. Tehran humanizes everyone. While the Israeli agents are the protagonists, the Iranian agents are shown to be incredibly rich and complex characters. If anything, the show is against the Iranian government, but it does also show the Mossad doing bad things too. No show is perfect, but Tehran is incredibly humanizing towards all people.

When you are surrounded on all sides by people who want to kill you, it’s a given.

There are many Arab viewers, in fact. Also, many Palestinians and Arabs watch the Israeli hit show "Fauda" ("Chaos" in Arabic) on Netflix. "Euphoria" and "In treatment" are based on Israeli TV shows also.

@@FreeArtsakh2024 well, that's not exactly true, is it? LOTS of Israel haters are trying to stir up concern about Israel's nukes. The problem for those haters is that no one is actually up at night worried that Israel is going to attack them with nuclear weapons. That is a worry that no one has. But the same cannot be said for Iran! Countries all over the Middle East, and all over the world are worried about iran getting the bomb. Look at it this way: several middle eastern countries have indicated that if Iran gets the bomb, they will also be forced to develop their own. On the other hand, those same countries have known about israel's nuclear weapons for decades, and notably did NOT feel it necessary to respond in kind. says a lot about who can be trusted, huh?
