Dr Lara Dungan investigates Ireland’s ambitious pledge to reduce carbon emissions by 50% in just 10 years. Is this reduction even possible? And can we decarbonise and grow the economy at the same time?
2020 has been an unforgettable year. As Covid-19 shocked the world, lockdowns forced us to take stock of the environment around us and the toll human activity and our lifestyles have on the environment. As attitudes changed over the past year, climate change and how to solve it has become one of the main political issues in Ireland. The scale of this crisis is unprecedented in human history, now the European Commission and the new Irish Government have set a strict target of 50% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030, that’s a commitment of 7% emissions reduction per year for the next decade. No country has ever succeeded in cuts such as these. Do we have any chance of meeting this goal? and if we try, will it crash our economy? And how can we do this without leaving people behind?
Or is this an opportunity for Ireland, is there a way to keep growing our economy while we rapidly reduce emissions? The ambition with which we must tackle this issue, is like no other project ever attempted, one which will involve every part of our economy. In this episode Dr Lara Dungan will investigate Ireland’s pledge to tackle climate change and what it would take to continue to grow prosperity while rapidly reducing emissions.

Current electricity costs are being driven up mostly by fuel prices, If we switch to Nuclear power and give greater incentives to buy electric cars (including subsidising and prioritising lithium battery production) this problem will subside substantially over time. Also, many countries are going for the practical short term measures of taxing fossil fuel company profits to discourage extortionate profiteering. Overall though, Society’s rejection of Nuclear power was a massive mistake, and the environment has payed dearly for it as we continue to rely on fossil fuels for our electricity!

That's what makes us easy pickings. Usual low hanging fruit method of sorting a problem out.

This was nauseating to watch. Despite the evidence for climate change, I do not like the dogmatic nature of EcoEye. Some of the innovations are cool and I'm glad to see more consideration been focused on renewables. The 1500 people who have died from contaminated air is debatable. If we were to take it at face value, out of 5.03 million people thats not bad. Thats .029 of a percent of the population.

Ever here of planting a tree or two, the amount of land used all over the world for nothing, where trees could grow, should be covered with trees. Wood its 100% recyclable 100% sustainable and if properly treated can be burnt 100% carbon neutrally and most importantly removes carbon from the air while growing and doesn't require energy to do it. Is there something wrong with us its simple and cheap. Could be thousands of jobs created here with a proper forestry industry. But no lets stick a Euro on a bail of briquets, that will pay off our emotions.

are you sure it can be burnt without producing carbon? trees are literally made of carbon. how do they go about this ?
@philipmcdonagh1094

@@EireSaber I mean carbon neutral. When wood is burnt it puts the same amount of carbon into the atmosphere as it took from the atmosphere while growing. So for every three trees you grow burn one or two of them to produce much needed electricity.
