A Grey To Green Farm Transformation!

Despite it being the coldest spring since we moved to the farm 5 years ago, it is time to get this flower farm back to business! Ian is preparing the farm as quick as he can, so that Serina can plant out her overgrown ranunculus that have been suffering in seedling trays. The farm starts out as grey, but after a week of work it's starting to look green again! And with 1 of the 3 greenhouses fully planted, fresh cut flowers are looking closer and closer to being back in season.
__________
Ian and Serina of YOU CANT EAT THE GRASS feel that every small change can make a big difference to the world we live in. Every garden planted leads to a better future. We hope to inspire and motivate others to make positive changes in their lives by sharing our journey towards greater sustainability as we build our family farm. It's hard work to build a life worth living, and completely worth it!

It’s nice to see kids being kids. Digging holes making mud. When we were kids we’d dig a big hole, throw some plywood over the top and tada!!! Instant clubhouse

A suggestion while still bejjng jn infrastructure and labour perfection mode : do look out for any large restaurant stainless counters, you could put the trays out at standing height. Cheqp plastic tables would work too but when they break down i do hate it.

A ramp and a level patch of ground would shorten the lisi watering task. You could roll out the rack and be done. How about an auger on the end of a large power drill to make holes faster? And the door for the greenhouses? May be 2023 is the year you can invest in getting some of your time back.

@@YouCantEatTheGrass Please consider adopting electroculture (and magnetoculture) gardening methods -- providing greater and faster yeilds with lower inputs. These include various simple techniques developed in the 1800s and 1900s. For example, using copper garden/farming tools improves soil health and plant production. I have an unheated greenhouse- but no good way to ventilate so I'm creating a caterpillar tunnel for them. Thanks for your footage that is real.
@YouCantEatTheGrass
@YouCantEatTheGrass Год назад
This was actually filmed 2 weeks ago. We are working on the next vlog too, and I can't remember if we filmed it. But, one of the most important things we did with the tunnels for flowers was that we invested into shade cloth. Most of what we grow need the shade and cooler days more then they need the extra heat. This tunnel was getting too hot almost immediately so we put the shade cloth up a few days after planting and it makes a massive difference

I'm curious. Why are you using a hand spade to plant thousands of seedlings? You could use a battery operated drill with a 3" auger and make your holes in minutes. Make maybe 25 holes, plop in the seedlings, fill around, and repeat. Another way would be to shovel a trench across every however inches apart you want them, lay them in the trench and fill in the dirt. It just seems like it would be more efficient. Love your videos and how the spring planting is coming along. Happy Easter and God Bless!
@YouCantEatTheGrass
@YouCantEatTheGrass Год назад
those auger tools work really poorly with our soil because we are such a sand pit. The holes just collapse on themselves and mostly just make a mess. Because the soil is light and fluffy too, its really easy to make holes. The augers are great for heavier clay soils though

I was going to say that too. At the nursery we plant peonies at least in 3's knowing they might stay in pots all year...but then a bigger pot is so much harder to plant out so I'm guessing that's why Serena did 1's.

Are some of the corms left over from the prior year or did you have to buy all new?
@YouCantEatTheGrass

We saved some from last year, but we are going to use those to try and experiment with a fall crop. All of these are new for this year

Got stressed looking at the mass of roots in those ranunuculus trays. Why not sow them in cells? seems like a good way to avoid the 2hrs of pulling roots apart?
@YouCantEatTheGrass
@YouCantEatTheGrass Год назад
I did in the past, but they didn't pre sprout as well. They only were so overgrown because the weather. It's a pain to rip them apart, but they still transplant well and are further ahead

serena, what do you fertilize your ranunculus with? i am noticing mine in the fraser valley ( not planted in a tunnel) are really struggling.
@YouCantEatTheGrass
@YouCantEatTheGrass Год назад
It could be the cold - it's been exceptionally cold this year. Mine look a little worn out from all the freezing nights. I haven't fertilized them in the past, but I'm going to try giving them a foliar feed once the nights stop freezing so hard.

@@YouCantEatTheGrass oh thank you! that gives me hope. i chose not to do a low tunnel over them as i thought they liked cold. 💕 😅 these are from unicorn so i expect they’ll be pretty sturdy once they get going. i am going to use a calcium liquid on them for stem strength.

i can't comment on the older videos, so i am gonna ask this here: what's with that elvis poster in the chicken coop? i mean, i know, you don't have that anymore, but what was the idea? i am sooooo suspicious! did elvis made the chickens to lay more eggs? were they louder watching his poster? was the rooster calmer sharing his ladies with him? tell me everything about it!!! :D

Lol. When we moved here the outbuilding was filled with junk, and some of it makes us laugh for how kitschy it is - like the Elvis art. So we displayed it
