For a history buff, Gettysburg is without a doubt one of the top destinations in the U.S. Even if the Civil War isn't your thing (which means that there's something wrong with you), Gettysburg has something to offer. But the whole thing can be overwhelming. Especially to a first time visitor. So we're doing something a little different in this episode and offering up some suggestions on what to do with 3 days in Gettysburg. You can go more in depth with each of the sites that we cover via our Gettysburg playlist here: • Gettysburg in Depth

@@TheHistoryUnderground Growing up I spent a lot of time in Gettysburg my grandmother lived in a Civil War home on York street in the sixties when they were doing renovations they found numerous rifles canteen's clipboard Uniform buttons and ranks it was donated to the Gettysburg chamber of Commerce. I could tell you about her house being haunted and things unexplainable I saw on the battlefield because at that time we could run the battlefield pretty much day-and-night.

This was awesome!!! It can definitely get overwhelming for a history nerd when you get there because you want to see everything right away so you end up with no rhyme or reason sometimes to what order you see Gettysburg and it becomes a tangled mess….take it from me 😂😂😂😄

I have toured a number of battlefields, including Gettysburg more than once, and I find it very helpful to read a factual narrative of the battle prior to the actual visit. Then the academic story is understood ahead of time and the actual sites draw practicality to the abstract. After returning home I re-read the narrative and that ties it together by being able to visualize the actual sites while reading reabsorbing the facts and details.

♥️👍😁it’s such a beautiful and haunting place. 160 years really doesn’t seem that long. I was born 90 years after the Civil War ended. Not long at all when you’re looking at the history of this country and how young it really is. Totally enjoyed this. 👍😁

Great tour, JD. You might like to know that I am a casualty of the Battle of Gettysburg ! When I was 11 years old, my parents took me to Gettysburg for the 100th anniversary - in 1963. I was a Civil War buff even at that young age. However, while we were touring the battlefield I developed stomach pains and was taken to the local hospital. I was diagnosed with appendicitis and operated on. My appendix was removed in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. So to this day, I claim that a part of me remained on the battlefield -LOL.

My sisters and I just went down this weekend. It was great. It rained all day Saturday, but we hit the museums. Everyone has to see the caught in the crossfire exhibit inside the new museum. We go 4 to 5 times a year. I’ve seen just about everything but that is incredible! Tim Smith was standing outside the exhibit asking everyone how it was so we had a good conversation with him. It was great!

Was in DC in October last year for work with my brother and coworkers and we decided fairly last minute to visit Gettysburg. Your past content helped a lot with knowing where we wanted to go during just one day. Seminary and taking the tour there along with the Gettysburg Museum of History were two great stops. Toured all the major areas of the battlefield as well. So much more to see but thanks to your excellent content everyone in our group enjoyed it. Was so much more fun than we all expected.

Years back a friend and I spent a week in Gettysburg, "we were sleeping in our car," each day we would sneak into the Pool at the Hotel that was part of the General Lee Headquarters Museum. My 3rd great uncle's name is on the big memorial in Gettysburg Memorial Park, the State of Pennsylvania's Memorial, his name was Brigadier General Thomas L. Kane. He was an attorney and abolitionist from Pennsylvania, as well as raising the 62nd Pennsylvania Volunteers Infantry Regiment, known as the 13th Pennsylvania Reserves, they were called the orginal "Bucktails" from Pennsylvania. Life long PA resident and was raised appreciating and respecting the hallowed ground that is Gettysburg. There's really no experience comparable to it except maybe Pearl Harbor, which I have not been fortunate to see yet. The anniversary every year is always a great time to go, but the crowds can sometimes take away from the reverence, but it's definitely something to do at least once. The 150th a while back when they re-enacted Pickett's Charge was awe inspiring. Thanks for giving this amazing place the exposure it so deserves.

My family visited Gettysburg in 2003. We were on a tight budget but they had a very good self-guided tour that consisted of a CD and map. The CD played in the car while you navigated the battlefield starting over on the Chambersburg Pike where the battle opened and ending on Cemetery Hill. We took 2 days to cover the ground, not wanting to rush or miss anything. It included a fair bit about Culp's hill but it did not encompass Barlow's knoll, which I regret. But the highlight was finding the unit markers for my great-great-great-grandfather's artillery unit on Cemetery Ridge, where they fought on days 2 and 3. We also found the actual after-action reports from his unit in the archives when we visited Kennesaw Mountain, and found his name and unit in the records at Gettysburg. It was a humbling and precious touch-stone to the past, and I will never forget walking the very ground that papa Andrew walked as he fought his gun with his crewmates in the 2nd West Virginia Artillery.

In future videos, you may wish to suggest that people take a walking tour of the town of Gettysburg to learn some of these stories. Takes 4 days of walking and you will see almost all the markers with prompts to act out some of the battle. I have never seen any Scouts talk at the end of walking Pickets charge. There are 5 markers for Vermont, one at the angle where they smashed the end of pickets charge. Do the towers and visit Eisenhower place. If you drive this place you will not get 1/4 of what happened

There is so much to see you need to stay awake and moving for 16 hours straight. And also stay near bathrooms and food and drink. You can spend two weeks straight and still not see everything, ghost tours at night are simply amazing. Finding the exact spot where you died and apologizing to those you killed or caused to die is a must; after taps is played at sundown, you better stay fully alert till midnight. Whispers in the night air will make your mind play tricks on you; many died so quickly and are still looking for revenge. They can tell if your a Yankee or a johnny reb as soon as you open your mouth. The vibe in the air is like no other on earth. This is not a place for children 18 and under.

Sustained a head wound on July 2nd and ended up "in the hands of the enemy ". After treated at field hospital he was sent to Ft. McHenry for remainder of the war. I saved and printed his war record(s) from Fold3. Amazing he survived his injury received on battlefield/hospital, even if not life threating(assuming it wasn't)due to sanitary conditions but also being a prisoner of war. Obviously, he did or I wouldn't be here, lol.

My husband and I make the trip to Gettysburg every couple years and never fail to learn something new every time. We’re headed their Memorial Day week this year for 8 days, I agree with everyone of your recommendations. Gonna miss our Little Round Top sunsets.

“What to do in 3 days” … take full battlefield tour, stop at American History Museum, buy a book somewhere…. Have wings at blue and gray tavern …. Also… book at 1863 hotel:.. it’s a good central point for everything …. Also… take photos at little round top at sunset .. absolutely beautiful….btw … JD thank you for showing a great amount of love appreciation for such a great spot in American History

This is good to know. I’m a little over an hour south of Gettysburg. Love it there we go for a weekend a few times year. We’ve done bus tours through the battle field but never had a definitive plan. I’ve seen your guys shop there I’ll be sure to swing in next time we go. Thanks for this.

went twice in 2019...1st time was for a week as my late birthday present(January but went in April)my father taught me the history of the Civil War and even through he died in 1996...i never felt closer to him than that trip...i could "feel"him talking to me while i toured the battlefield...took so many pictures that i will always cherish...because due to his health...he never made it there when i was growing up..,,2nd time was in October as the wife and i stopped for 2 days on our yearly trip to Connecticut..she loved the historical aspect of the town and even agreed that she was impressed by the battlefield and its monuments..especially after visiting the cyclorama at the visitors center

My wife and I have visited the Gettysburg battlefield every year since 2005 and on occasions twice in a single year. ( it's a seven hour drive from our home ) It still amazes me even after all those trips we learn some thing new every time. Recommend: visitor center, licensed battlefield guides it's all amazing and we continue plan trips every year.

Great guide 👍 There's a few places in town I've yet to get to but I've been to pretty much all the others. I just joined the ACHS, so I will definitely be going to the new Beyond the Battle Museum on my next visit. By the way, Culps Hill has always been my favorite place to visit, especially at the end of the day.

I absolutely love and look forward to seeing your videos. I know you've probably heard this a million times, but I have to say THANK YOU for doing these videos. In an age that in my opinion our history is being erased, you and those like you teach even the most unsavory of our history so it's not forgotten. Please keep up the amazing work you do.
