Eno is a genius and a personal hero of mine. His body of work as a solo artist alone is astounding. Once you add his production credits and collaborations, he's easily one of the most important musicians of the 20th century.

The effort you put into researching and creating all of your videos continues to astound me. This is EASILY the best music channel on RU-vid and I am so glad you keep getting more attention!

I'm very partial to "By This River". I think it's one of the best musical pieces ever created.

I bought Warm Jets just after it came out in 1974. It has remained in my top 5 throughout my life (I'm now 60). Eno's collaboration with Cluster kick-started my interest in Krautrock too.

'Becalmed' off Another Green World, I think, is one of the best songs ever made. It soothes some kind of unknown 6th sense

You had me until Before and After Science. It's widely recognized as a landmark album. Julie With is a masterpeice, one of his greatest compositions.

Before and After Science is my favourite Eno record, and it has had far more of an impact on me than Green World, Warm Jets etc.... I think the album encompasses all facets of Eno's musicality and gives the listener a taste of everything that he is about. As great as his other records are, there's something chilling about Science's second half (which acts as a great sample before Brian fully delves into his ambient works) and may just be more beautiful than even those ambient records.

Your descirption of An Ending brought me to tears, as I've been trying for years to figure out what exactly it makes me feel. That fluctuation between cosmic loneliness and cosmic solidarity is so fitting.

I personally quite like Before and After Science, probably more than Here Come the Warm Jets. Something about the lush vocal harmonies, the sort of lilting, pastoral vocal melodies contrasted with the rhythmic, percussive guitar and bass and the busy drumwork really appeals to me. No One Receiving is great, King's Lead Hat too, Here He Comes as well.

Eno has changed my perspective on music so deeply. I encountered his ambient works at a time when that kind of music was so vital, even to my sanity. I've always had the tendency to focus on the music I was listening, and I always listened to complex, heavy, proggy stuff, experimental stuff. Having the opportunity of applying this same focus on ambient music, it was like submerging my attention in sound without it being exhausting and overstimulanting. I started to practice meditation shortly afterwards. My favorite albums are Ambient 4: On Land (last track Dunwich Beach, Autumn, 1960 is one of my favorite pieces of music ever! Yeah, an ambient piece), Apollo: Atmospheres & Soundtracks and Equatorial Stars. Really a musical treasure.

Very concise guide. Can I add that Before and After Science has some of his most beautiful songs...Julie With, At This River, Spider and I and King's Lead Hat is one of his most fun tracks. In my opinion anyway! Thanks Oliver.

Thanks for your work here! Before and after science is one of my favorites. Of course kings led hat gave me a manic rush, and still does, but, Julie With is so beautiful and tranquil. The album seems to evolve from headyness into heartful calm.

Before and After Science --- Clearly Eno's best art rock release. Some tracks "not fitting" is intentional. When you consider the title, it makes a lot of sense that side 1 has a somewhat familiar art rock sound, and then side 2 becomes more and more ambient as it goes on. Not to mention it has some of Eno's strongest songwriting - "By This River," "Spider and I," "Julie With." I highly recommend this release.

Since you asked, 'Spider and I' from the Science LP is a haunting, beautiful track.

An Ending-Ascent is for me the most blissful piece of music I've heard, the minimalism of just having a multi-tracked melody line gives it a sense of a simple irreducible purity.

Wonderful comprehensive guide to Eno's work! Thanks for taking the time to make this. My personal favorites are Thursday Afternoon and the two albums done with Harold Budd (The Plateaux of Mirror and The Pearl). Apollo follows just behind. These tracks never get old, in part because they can never really be known or anticipated no matter how many times you listen to them. By this I mean, when compared to a standard pop song that becomes so familiar after a few times it's heard that you know exactly where you are in the song and what will come next at any given moment, the "non-linearity" of these tracks by Eno, especially Thursday Afternoon, defy this kind of familiarity. The sense of discovery remains in the music in spite of 30 years of repeated listening.

Amazing work Oliver, this is a fantastic guide to Eno's music! His work has had a tremendous influence on my music and the Ambient series in particular was really inspiring to me back in the day (along with his work with Fripp, Evening Star is amazing!). Excellent commentary and insight, Oliver! I have a lot of Eno's stuff from Roxy Music to his solo career to other artists he has produced and collaborated with. He is, at times, an acquired taste but still remains a vitally important force in music in the latter part of the 20th and early part the 21st centuries. There is little doubt of his artistic and creative genius and how it has impacted many other prominent artists in the music industry like David Bowie, U2, Talking Heads Coldplay, and a bevy of others.

Great work here man! I love so much of Eno's music and have a hard time picking any favorites without listing a ton of releases. That last quote is beautiful. After having listened to a ton of his output and stumbling upon Tracks and Traces, my mind was blown even more than it had been already....My Life in the Bush with Ghosts is something I can't help but listen to over and over...I feel like Small Craft on a Milk Sea is underrated, it truly creates new terrain. I've gone into it a bit, but then go back thinking nothing is going to be as good as Another Green World, and that album, for sure, remains a perfect space to be bewildered by. The second side of Before and After Science, in my opinion, is supposed to be disconnected from the first half. Structurally, I think it is similar to the Bowie Berlin albums, Heroes and Low, as the second side is an ambient counterpart to the first side. I find the melodies and sonic characteristic of the synths will this side of the album is really beautiful.

Amazing guide. I started with Music For Airports and that is still my favorite. Been picking up a lot of the rest of these here and there as I could over the years going in no particular order. It's great to hear it ordered chronologically in this way and sense some order in the releases I've picked up. Really excellent video. I'm not new to Eno by any means, but it's difficult to know where to go after the big classics, especially given how many music writers/critics struggle to describe his ambient works without resorting to cliche. Not something that could be said about this at all - you really bring out all the nuances of the albums, the similarities and evolution between them, and it really shows how much work you put into it all. I'm a big fan, please keep it up!

How has RU-vid's algorithm waited until now to bring me to your channel?!? This analysis is spectacularly good, and incredibly informative - you pointed me towards so much music I'd never got to, and the context you bring to each release made me enjoy the ones I already knew even more. Extra credit for the Spaced references too :D I really hope you get chance to pick up this channel again after your masters.

Man! You are a genius!!!!! Thank you for highlighting the importance of the non-ambient albums of Eno, which to me, are just as important, if not more so. However, I strongly disagree with you about Before and After Science. It is a bit disjointed but still amazing. The level of innovative Eno's aesthetics and atmospheres are a kind of exceptional language never heard before. Such is the case of Kurt's Rejoinder. Eno became the equivalent of modern 70's design, and avant art, like nothing else, defining a very special sensitivity. One point I want to make is that back then, this record was on the vinyl format, which gave a mandatory pause between side one and side two, which explains the lack of continuity between King's Lead and Here he comes. The two sides were meant to be different, side B is literally, the flip side. --I have been listening to Eno since the 70's. It changed my view on life, the world, and aesthetics. Thank you for your insights.

This is only my second listen to one of your "Deep Cuts" surveys, but I can tell you right now that you have a prescient aural awareness that is seamlessly coupled with a brilliant clarity of exposition. I came to your channel hoping only to test my memory on the unfolding discography of King Crimson as it impacted my life from the purchase of the first album. What I found was a spot on comprehension of a now legendary artistic conceit that has up till now defied this kind of humanitarian treatment. How you managed to both understand the genius of Robert Fripp and level a mature praise through your musical analysis is a testament to the power of authentic talent. Autoplay brought me directly to this Eno guide and, as with Crimson, I have listened to his musical output from my boyhood. I cannot express what sympathies arise from hearing your sparkling intelligence and musical appreciation converge here.

Eno's four 70's 'art rock' projects are some of my favorite albums ever, with Here Come the Warm Jets and Another Green World easily ranking in any all time top 10 list I could construct, and in these sorts of situations where I love some part of an artist's discography so enormously I often find myself hesitant to explore the rest, partly because I'm already satisfied with what I've found and partly because I don't want to spoil my spotless impression of their work by hearing their almost inevitable decline and missteps (low-hanging example: imagine if you never knew post-pinkerton weezer existed...) --- But with the way you described some of these albums, I think you've convinced me that it's time to crack into ambient Eno.

I love Eno and his ability to not just be a musician but this amorphous artist that encapsulates the space he projects is brilliant. It's like a beautiful piece of architecture or a great sculpture in the sense the space around it or negative space in it create the piece just as much as the piece itself and I think you touched on this perfectly. Like ( Devo, Ultravox, Elvis Costello, Talking heads, Paul Simon... etc , etc) o even Coldplay (lol) and how Eno influence them as artists.

I remember when I found it I couldn't believe how he captured the essence of cold, vast abyss in which we all are suspended. I think this album inspired me the most to get into making music/sounds (of which I don't have much idea btw, so it's cool to hear Brian Eno was also self-taught ;)

I have been the number one Eno (and Budd and the rest) fan for forty plus years and I just gave up on trying to educate young people about Eno and his collaborations. When you got to 1983 I thought "that's it - I've gone mad - I fantasized an album Bush of Ghosts" then you backed up so I hadn't lost my mind. Wow. Nice work.

Your depth if knowledge and articulation is amazing! You describe some very deep and dense music in Eno’s catalog perfectly. You were great in Spider-Man: Homecoming as well (I kid, I kid)

Just watched. Quite comprehensive and compelling. The hour went by quickly. I always loved Eno and instrumental music. In the 80s, I attended his installation in Boston. Also Fripp performing Frippertronics before a Satriani G3 show in California. Eno has created a lasting Ambient artist colony. Bandcamp, for example, has many such artists. Good job covering Eno as a solo artist. I enjoyed it and your delivery.

Before And After Science will always hold a place deep in my heart. I had not really heard of Eno until the Low/'Heroes' collaboration, and BAAS was my first exposure, my curiosity driven by the sudden explosion of musical novelty in the Bowie discs. I realized how fabulous a producer Eno was, and went out and started buying up the prior catalogue. I'm sure you get to Wrong Way Up from the early 90s...that is also one of my favorites, as it seemed to harken back to the good old days a bit...almost nostalgic in its references and listenability. :)

I must revisit these albums after your video. You're the man :)

I have "Headcandy", the CD Rom was interesting, especially for the time. The whole thing was very psychedelic, the music which I enjoy and think it still stands up well on it's own. The visuals were a series of trippy colorful graphics that moved around the screen and changed shapes and colors. It was designed to be viewed in a very dark room and included glasses that when viewed at the right distance it duplicated the look of the screen into a 3 by 3 grid so you basically saw the visuals nine times but as one large screen (hard to describe).

This channel is VERY GOOD. I'm convinced it will blow up sooner or later

Oh wow! Another Day On Earth is another one of my favorites!!! I love the title track. And the female vocals on some tracks add such depth. A very important work in my opinion.
