Loughs Agency welcomes the growing trend of ‘catch and release’ angling as a way of continuing to fish whilst limiting the impact on local stocks.
This video aims to help guide anglers with their catch and release technique in order to increase the survival rate of salmon after release by:
• Landing the fish quickly to avoid exhausting the fish.
• Using a soft knotless mesh net and keeping the fish in the water at all times.
• If you must handle the fish, using wet hands and cradle it below the belly. Never put your fingers inside the gill covers or lift the fish by the tail.
• Using a single barbless hook to limit injury during removal. Remove the hook immediately, keeping the fish in the water.
• If the hook is caught deep in the fish, cut the line and release with hook still inside rather than trying to remove deep-caught hook.
• When releasing the fish, support it in the water using two hands, with the head pointing upstream to aid breathing.
Thanks for watching.

The whole system should be catch and release, there's no justification for killing salmon. Plus their numbers have been in decline for decades due to the salmon farms and trawlers. Catch and release is the best way to preserve our precious salmon.

The justification is eating it! I am tired of being made to feel guilty about killing the occasional fish for the table. As you say yourself, the main threats are drift nets ( not trawlers), and offshore farms.

@@dastgaz Why should you eat a salmon? You can buy many alternative foods. Wild salmon are in crisis so we should be trying our hardest to maintain the stocks and save our salmon for the future generations.

I eat them because they are natural, heathy and delicious. I believe that responsible anglers are the least of the salmons problems . Let’s tackle the big problems like 80% smolt predation, commercial netting, seals, offshore farms, pollution. Catch and release is equivalent to giving a cancer patient an aspirin.

Continuing to kill salmon after catching them is the equivalent of leaving cancer untreated then. Catch and release helps mitigate declining stocks.

@Bannsider Denying that killing caught salmon is bad for their population is just stupidity or greed. It is correct that anglers are the salmon's best friend as we are the ones who fight to save them. As far as I'm concerned eating a fish classed as vulnerable under European conservation law is wrong and anyone who truly cares about the king of fish should not actively try to kill the shadow of a run that we have today. Farmed salmon should definitely not be eaten, as you know it is the greatest threat to wild salmon along with trawlers. If you want to protect our precious salmon. Also your called bannsider so if you fish the bann or its tributaries you are legally required to release any salmon you catch.
