A Guide to Solarpunk Fashion 

My ideas for solar punk clothing are that they would be made of Cotton and linen for summerwear , Wool for winterwear, and perhaps silk as a decorative element. The pipeline for clothing should be new->2nd hand(if outgrown)->Cleaning rags->Fire starter->Fertilizer . Textiles should be non-toxic at every stage in this cycle , care must be taken when considering dyes & reusable components like buttons , zips , and other fasteners to ensure they are reusable when a replacement piece of clothing is made.

What I've been yet to realise until watching this video is that solarpunk has a lot more diversity fashion wise than most if not all modern esthetics. I don't mean it in cultural way but in way of it can be styled in lots of ways, it doesn't exclude elegant nor streetllike clothing. I feel like it's overall less about a look more about where it came from and what it means and that rather lovely

Thank you for including the ethnic diversity within Europe descendent peoples, it’s so frustrating in the US that all light-skinned peoples are just “white” and boiled down to nothing more than generic American. Even within countries there is a vast number of tiny ethnic groups and folk dress. Take Germany, it’s more than just the cliché lederhosen, the East German peoples that mixed with Slavic (Wend) peoples for eons are considered Sorbians and have a very distinct style unlike the rest of the nation. That can be incorporated into a modern look as well.

I live in south America specifically in Venezuela near of natives and currently living in a city with urban natives. Our culture has a mixed and it´s insanely beautifull to see clothes that are just shaped into our climate, with vibrant colors made by fresh cottons. And hats made with dry palms

This is a really good and thought provoking video! My favorite part was your own outfits. I sometimes find the solarpunk drawings a bit unrealistic, probably because i come into the community through ecology/collapse awareness rather than steampunk or another punk. I want solarpunk to really create a new story that we live by, so i find the whole idea of locally grown fibers, local weaving and clothes construction. For myself i am going to start trying to grow/farm flax, hemp, wool and maybe cotton (although i believe it is a more water demanding crop). I am also really interested in capsule wardrobe as a route to simple, sustainable fashion. When i was younger, my own aesthetic was late 60s hippy meets Celtic, but as i get older and embrace the crone archetype, i am thinking what that will look like. I love scarves, so a video about how to work with them to lived up simple outfits would be amazing. My sewing skills are currently limited, so I'm thinking basic tunic and wife legged trousers are my most likely solarpunk look!

I love the idea of including aspects of your own culture in your clothing. It's defenitly something i've been trying to do. I think it's a really good way to feel connected and also learn about other peoples culture🌼☺

This is a nice piece on solarpunk fashion. To continue this theme a discussion of materials would be good. Including using more sustainable fibers, regionally appropriate/available items materials which also influence style choices. The Fibershed concept might be of interest to you because it focuses on local and sustainable materials in clothing production. Very interesting topic!

I'm brazillian and I'm studying about the ecopunk aesthetic and its use in day-to-day life. Primarily it's important to note that brazil has very features from the mix of indigenous and african culture into modern society that fits into this aesthetic. locally it's spreading the use of bio-jewels made of various seeds of the amazon trees and golden-grass and buzios necklaces, purses, bracelets and etc. These accessories are very interesting to integrate into the outfits because of their ecological value, since they're biodegradable materials and are rich in authenticity.

Nice and very informative! I've also tried to make solarpunk outfits from what I have in my closet, it's a fun experiment! I'm also interested in the tech aspect of solarpunk fashion, like 3d printed clothing, and incorporating lights or some kind of power generator (solar panel hats/parasols, kinetic shoes, etc.) That's behind my skill but I love seeing others play around with it

This is a really cool exploration of solarpunk fashion possibilities! I've personally been imagining a big focus on more sustainable fibers, like linen, hemp, organic cotton, and ethically grown wool. And as textile waste is such a massive problem in today's fashion industry, I envision a movement toward zero-waste pattern designs, which are often flowier and boxier, like a lot of the examples you showed.

Ok so my fave outfit is the one with bumblebee vibes. It looks so comfy and is simple yet elegant.... My own personal style is generally "comfortable" and basically whatever's cheapest at the thrift store. I really admire people like you who have an eye for design and fashion, because while I can admire it, I'm not good at all at putting outfits together or thinking of cool clothing possibilities. I really enjoyed this video, though one of the bones I have to pick with solarpunk fashion as depicted in art is that it often seems very unattainable... Either due to price or the fact that the fabrics/tech don't exist yet. (And also I'm the kind of person who defaults to low-effort leggings and sweaters when I don't have to go out or be seen by others, and solarpunk fashion doesn't seem to include those just yet.) PS: I love that your jacket is an ever-changing work of wearable art. So solarpunk!

A thought, combining flowy, multipurpose garments, like the kilt, arisiad/great kilt, serape, sarong, aguayo, poncho, ruana, toga, cloak, and many more would reflect a lot of the values that solar punk seeks to invoke. These garments are not only going to be simple to make, work well with a variety of patterns inspired by various cultures, look good on smock, tunic, or shirt based fashions, and allow the surviving fabric to be repurposed easily when the garments wears out.

I love that you bring your European (yes I'm over generalizing your heritage like mentioned in the video) inspirations in your fashion, you made an exelnt video on this topic thanks! Also my favorite offit has to be your purple dress, you seem like you could be sent back into the past and still fit in, absolutely timeless.

I think one part of solarpunk fashion could be its functional aspects. Like for example, there are a lot of jokes about pockets for womens' clothes, to sell more handbags and stuff. So deeper pockets are an idea, reduces the stuff you normall have to buy.

Hal Hefner's work looks particularly interesting to me, as it combines solarpunk aesthetics with streetwear influences and even a bit of 80's cyberpunk (without the dystopianism). Solarpunk with a nice bit of grit.

I feel more examples you gave are high couture. I think regional, cheap butnintricate floral Designs seen in chikan kurtas is what i consider solar punk. Especly in hot dry climate where i am At.

It could also be the base clothing with natural fibers such as cotton, hemp, mixed with synthetic fabrics created from organic material such as spider web, and intelligent materials so that the mix between natural balance and technological capacity merge.

I love this I just started exploring Solarpunk the other day and am thinking of incorporating it into my novels, though I have come to the realization that it is definitly a part of my identity as a lot of media I like includes aspects of it and it always brightens my day. Fashion is one aspect I'm excited to learn about. For me when I was thinking of Solarpunk for fashion and taking in different people's thoughts I thought Bohemian as a basis for the outift as I know that's kind of hippie inspired (or that was the description i found when i was double checking it was the correct attire) but a lot of designs i've seen has the flow that I feel like would fit Solarpunk among other things as well. I love the sense of different ethnic attires and hope to research more on the different aspects of fashion since I know Solarpunk deals with a community aspect and I have always loved different attires from around the world.

Have you checked out Wildling Shoes? I only recently learned about Solar Punk, but I think they align really well. Nature, Family, Community and Health. We source the raw materials to make our textiles like wool from German sheep and cotton from community projects in Kyrgyzstan and also use a paper textile called Washi for our shoes. I'm the designer of the shoes and was interested in your video to learn of more ways to improve our goals. I recently also just identified the art nouveau aesthetic of nature as key to develop more interest and awareness of nature. Thanks for sharing :)

I dunno, most of the outfits showcased here do not scream easy interaction with nature but rather artistic ruminations on nature as a concept. I think realistically a solarpunk world would see a lot more practical styles. I recently saw Encanto and I feel like the aesthetic of that world may be closer to what we would see in a genuine expression of Solarpunk.

Perhaps the 'punk' part of Solarpunk fashion could be an emphasis in reusing/repurposing clothing and overturning their intended use. Industrial-safety gear and military surpluses, as well as used clothing of any kind, can be dyed and/or cut-up to make other garments. *This could kickstart a resurgence of the tailor/seamstress craft* and become a source of income and recreation for many people, much like it happened in the punk scene back in the 70s. Here's a few suggestions for making Solarpunk fashion more edgy, as an anti-capitalist statement and lifestyle change for the people who embrace it: 1. *To hell with ageism and body-shaming!* It must be understood that human life has stages, and that the body naturally changes as it goes through these stages. Therefore, appropriate clothing should be designed and made for each stage of life and for each body-type, in a most flattering and becoming way for the wearer (that is: the opposite of what industrialization requires, which is for the wearer to fit into the mass-produced clothing.) This is why handmade and custom-fit is the way to go. Also, the possibility of choosing to conceal part or all of one's own anatomy should be acknowledged and included in Solarpunk fashion. If you wish to go out in a veil, that should be okay. 2. *Flower-power!* Lots of inspiration can be taken from hippie fashion from the 60s, and also from gypsy, Indian (from India, I mean) and Ber-ber (desert tribes) for the summer season and tropical climates. For cold seasons and circumpolar latitudes, the use of capes should be brought back (instead of coats and other labor-intensive items) and also functional clothing such as those donned by the Sami people in Scandinavia. 3. *Bring back hats!* The use of hats came into decline because of the pervading presence of the automobile, and people seldom use them anymore (even if they could really benefit from them because of the weather or for improving their appearance!) Therefore, donning hats is a great fashion statement against car-polluted cities, and a nod to a more pedestrian lifestyle. Bonus points for bringing back the hatter/milliner shops and more local business opportunities for young people. 4. *Barefooting and nudism... when appropriate!* Particularly in rural areas and for warm weather, the best clothes to wear is from little to no clothes at all. Going barefoot is also excellent for psychological grounding and connection with the Earth, and the practice of nudism is amazing for community building. Garments specifically created for going partially topless (male and female) are also a great way to make a statement, particularly for decolonization. For example, the Indian sari used to be worn bare-breasted, and it was the Englishmen who imposed the little shirt they wear underneath nowadays. 5. *Skirts for everyone!* The fact that pants, shirts and suits dominate fashion is due to industrialization and mercantilism, but before that, simple garments such as kilts, sarongs, tunics, cloaks, togas and the like were the norm. A great way to make Solarpunk visible and notable would be to make these garments fashionable again, particularly for men, but also for women (let's face it: the skirt has gone into disuse nowadays). And don't even get me started on the political/ideological connotations of men's kilts. For preventing culture shock and the costumey-effect, a gradual transition and easing into this fashion should be done. This will allow the scene to naturally grow and take over, as time goes by. Start by wearing hats frequently. If you are a guy, wear a suit and tie WITH the kilt, for some occasion. In the winter, wear jeans AND a cloak. *Believe me: people start by looking funny at you, but next thing you know they imitate you.* That's what's been happening in my neighborhood with hats, because of me. Also? If you are a seamstress, a tailor and/or a fashion designer, be sure to open your shop carrying these Solarpunk-style items, and sell them at reasonable prices. No point in pushing luxury items, if we intend to beat consumerism AND promote this culture far and wide.

Its unfortunate to have a video talking about solar punk fashion without reffering to the practicability of the clothes, in terms of what are their purpose, what materials would fit the best, and how to provide those materials in a eco conscious manner. Moreover, i was sad to see only pictures of women wearing light robes than wouldn't be great to protect your skin from the sun or rough terrain (nature), and only one man wearing a pant. I think that the aspect of fashion discussed in this video misses the real point of solar punk, misses the opportunity to blur gender roles, and misses the aspect of nature practicability. Solar punk clothes should be not just nice to look at but should be practical wear you could use in a hike. However, i still love people taking about solar punk because its a future i want to see, and i am happy to discover another channel puting solar punk out there 😁 so thanks

I think honestly, a solarpunk fusion with cyber or pure cyberpunk is where the future is heading. I just got into solarpunk and I love the hopeful nature of it more refreshing than the grim gritty nature of cyber/ diesel/ even steampunk even though some of the ideas about it are not feasible due to the obvious detriment of proven human nature and desire. And also some stuff I disagree with. I'm an amateur(recent) aspiring and green tech enthusiast and fell in love with this nature and tech symbiosis so I hope to make solarpumk stuff

My opinion is that in a Solarpunk society the standar of fashion should take more of a minimalistic approach, as to minimize waste and focus on the essentials, obviously while fully accepting the people that want to convey their expression and art through fashion.

What was the video in the beginning from?

The most solarpunk fashion is non fashion. The SP T-shirt (for example) should be the most utilitarian, comfortable and timeless, a design that would be the ultimate design, the only 'fashion' would be what you print on it. Don't get too specific and fancy, that would make solar punk ephemeral and impermanent, a fad, something to be mocked six months later... SP should be timeless, practical and simple wit as little bling and bs as possible. F Fast fashion, most of those designs wouldn't last a season let alone a decade and certainly won't last an era. Have a rethink about those rather sophomoric, overly faux Neuveux approaches. Perhaps take those principles and reduce it down into simpler lines and forms.

I appreciate the values but the "costumey" aspect of it seems too fussy even if it looks cool...and probably less cool looking on those of us in middle age unfortunately...fun concept though.

I liked this video, but wish you went into the politics aspect more, because that is integral to the aesthetic. You touched on it a bit. I wanted to add that the shop Dancing Days, while buying clothes from garment workers, is also apparently selling "hippie" clothes to white folk, which reeks of appropriation. Something to consider when calling something ethical is whether there are other powers at play in the "partnership" that can lead to exploitation. I'm not well-informed about this particular shop but looking at their ig definitely raised some red flags.

I love solarpunk but I'm really not in love with the aesthetics, it's just blah to me. Not all solarpunk is bla but cyberpunk has solarpunk beat with style, sorry. Now the meaning is much deeper in solarpunk than cyberpunk. Cyberpunk has had time to evolve its style, so I can't give solarpunk to much crap about it. BTW I love art nouveau. I've been loving the Solarpunk movement lately! You had me up until 'lack the melanin'. The context of your point surrounding the statement seems to show a lack of understanding of ethnic groups of white people in Europe. The amount of melanin in your skin isn't an issue and, regardless of where you're from, you should embrace your heritage. I don't think the differences in skin color would be enough to discern one's ethnicity in a Solarpunk future, as skin colors trend closer together in populations at large.

Para lograr una estética no puedes mezclar cosas tan diversas y diferentes como el Art Noveau o Art And Crafts o indigenas americanos. Pues se alejan de la idea de representar una época post capitalista, con las nuevas tecnologías ecológicas y lo que plantea la literatura solar punk . Sin unas reglas originales que sintetizen el estilo, sin unos principios unificadores estrictamente estéticos, es muy difícil definir un estilo, una moda, una estética. El concepto de usar materiales naturales o reciclados, es interesante, pero hay dos caminos: materiales fabricados con productos naturales o utilizar los excedentes reciclados de la industria actual, que son materiales sintéticos.... Que colores usar? si se usan todos, no hay estilo. no hay funcionalidad en la ropa u objetos? entonces estamos volviendo al siglo xix. ¿La ropa debe parecer como cosplay de cuentos medievales?, entonces no es futurista. No es un futuro posible, sino el recuerdo de otros siglos (como el Steampunk). ¿Todo apunta a una mezcla de lo espiritual con la naturaleza? , entonces se acerca más al New age. La tecnología? las formas geométricas o curvas? si hay formas curvas e irregulares, se acerca mas al estilo hippie, si queremos tecnología y romper con lo figurativo, debemos mirar mas hacia el Bauhaus... Quien define estas normas estéticas? Si ya estan definidas, no habría participación ni creatividad posible y sería una contradicción.. Lo que intento decir , es que una a-estética visual solar Punk, debería llevar a lo visual, las ideas de la literatura Solar Punk, que es básicamente un futuro donde comunidades de personas, crean sociedades con tecnologías sustentable, mucha creatividad y funcionalidad y esto debe superar movimientos artisticos de siglos anteriores y buscar un camino propio.
