This splendid quartet, composed in 1927 while Schoenberg was employed by the Prussian Academy of Arts, is one of two works in this genre that employ the composer's dodecaphonic system, worked-out during the war years and on into the early '20s.
It is played here by the Arditti Quartet.

I just listened to this quartet for the first time (listened to the second quartet for the first time too). I found it quite fun. The obsessive ostinati in the first movement help give it a sense of locomotion and structure to make up for its atonality. It sort of makes me think of the Coriolanus Overture but also Bach's Chaconne for violin. The rondo in the last movement makes me think of a bunch of witches having a laugh in a forest late at night.

Both of those musical parallels are intriguing!
