I worked at the San Dimas shop for almost 2 years, back in '84-'86. They had just started making their own pick-ups. There were two assembly lines of 4 or 5 people in each. I was the last guy in one of the lines...I would put heat shrink on the soldered wire connections, tuck them between the chassis and the coils, and then pot them in hot wax. When there were no pick-ups to do, I processed the bolt on necks. Leveled the frets, buffed out the headstock, and put the tuning keys on. I saw and met so many famous, and to-be famous people...it was quite the experience.

I worked in the wood shop doing inlaying and fretting in 1985-1986. I left before they went to Ontario. Small world.

Everything I read, Eddie said he came up with the wax idea for the pickups. Watch the Smithsonian video of Eddie.

Eddie took credit for a lot of things. Wax had been used to seal electronic coils in other industries since the 1930s.

I really enjoyed your Charvel documentary. I’ve watched the recent on “The Charvel Gang” are something and as it’s a well directed/edited film it lacks something I just can’t at the time pinpoint.

I own 2 pre-production and 3 San Dimas-era Charvels (2 guitars and 1 bass), and I absolutely love them! I would add more to my collection if finances ever allowed for it!
