This song is proof of a-ha's talent and versatility. How can a song be so tender and fierce at the same time? A-ha are brilliant. I've been a listener of them from the start, IYKYK.
Something about this song moves me on a spiritual level. When the guitars and synth kick in, coming together in a flawless harmony. It NEVER fails to bring back memories of one of my personal heroes, Benny Harvey. Rest in peace, big man. I know he's looking down on all of us somewhere with a smile on his face.
“Manhattan Skyline” from their Scoundrel Days album was my personal anthem on March 11, 1987 when I moved during my junior year of high school and had to say goodbye to all of my friends. My folks wouldn’t let me stay behind & graduate. I was devastated and bitter for months. I’ve been a fan of A-ha for decades. “Cry Wolf” is another favorite. My grandmother on my dad’s side emigrated from Norway with my great-grandmother when she was only 2 years old. I want to travel there to see it before I get too old. ❤️
i was a big metal head. My favorite song was Run to The Hills by Iron Maiden from their album Number of The Beast. That was until Benny Harvey played this song & changed my life forever. RIP Benny still miss you big man.
Christ. I was in a record store in Soho thumbing through their vinyl and came across a pressing of Scoundrel Days. Made me think of you, big man. Seems like just the other day we were crammed into a van and pooling our change to get into a Slayer show. Who would have known what different paths our lives would take. RIP Benny Harvey. Gone, but never forgotten.
@@oyvi00i Benny Harvey was a living legend. He turned tears into diamonds, turned times of suffering into times of comfort, turned woes into praise. He's since passed on and we'll forever miss the big man.
@@oyvi00i Great artists that gave people joy are always remembered. This is quite common in the world and I'm surprised you haven't encountered others that say "Rest in Peace artist" to other artists before. Dead but not forgotten, my friend. I came here cause my friend, Benji - as I used to affectionately call him - absolutely loved this song. He always dreamed of visiting New York, especially Manhattan. He once said this song perfectly encapsulates his feelings towards NY city, and the fact that he's never gonna actually see it in person. He was a melancholic fella, to be honest. Music like this didn't really do him much good, only brought him down in the end...but whenever I hear this song on the radio, usually on my way to work, I can't help but smile as I remember him headbanging to the chorus of his song.... You'll always be missed, and know that the Harvey family will never be whole again without you. Benny Harvey - never to be forgotten.
A-ha is super underrated. I’m almost 17 and none of my friends know who they are. They have some real bangers, like Take on Me, Manhattan Skyline, The Sun Always Shines on TV, Hunting High and Low, I’ve Been Losing You, The Living Daylights, Cry Wolf, and Blue Sky, not to mention all the remixes and the MTV unplugged album.
They were very highly rated in the UK to have a string of Top 10 hits starting with Take on Me (number 2) in late 1985,then The Sun Always Shines on TV (number 1),Train of Thought,Hunting High and Low,I've Been Losing You,Cry Wolf and then this one in February/March 1987. And then they got to do the song for the new James Bond film that summer!
This song just makes me breakdown into tears every time. I can't even listen to it. It always just reminds me of one of my old friends, Benny Harvey. He passed away a while ago now but I feels like just yesterday we were hanging out. RIP Benny Harvey, miss you big man. Gone but not forgotten.
That was my uncle. He was a national treasure. Can still feel him with me now. Larger than life. Some stories he had. Some men live as heroes and die as legends. Well uncle benny Harvey is a god in their eyes ❤❤💯
No one saw it coming, he always had triple masks, an oil drum of sanitizer and heroically self isolated since 1995; such an innovator. RIP I salute you buddy, from a very very safe distance. In fact I'm backing away from myself right now; transcendental meditation is the only to way fly. Oh dear, must be going! I fear I'm starting a cough from my dry toast. I miss butter but no one wants to be a spreader.
The Original chorus is even better. Search for the Live version in 2010... I have the album that has the missing line, but can't find it anywhere... It may only be one line, but by god does it make your Soul Scream. In a good way.
Wirklich eine Ikone seiner Ära, so dankbar, dieses Lied mit einem großartigen Freund geteilt zu haben. Mein Freund Benny Harvey, ruhe in Frieden, großer Mann🙌🌝
This band were so ahead of their time in the 80's. The production is exceptionally clear and crisp you can hear every single instrument and vocal, this song still sounds infinitely better than any of the pop music made in the 90's right to the crap that's being produced today.!
Fucking hell man. I remember the day we lost Benny like it was yesterday. It was disheartening to know that such a good friend of mine had died, yet somehow soothing to know he’d gone to a better place. He played this song to me after an Iron Maiden Concert in the mid 2000s. He told me that his mate played this to him a day prior. We sat for a solid 30 minutes asking ourselves “How is this a-ha?”, and “can I believe anything anymore?”. What a fucking night. I was with him the moment he passed. His very last words were “How the actual fuck was that a-ha?”. He flatlined after that. I proceeded to cry for the next half an hour, and began to shout “I don’t know Benny! I don’t know!!”. It was a truly sad day for us all. R.I.P Benny Harvey, miss you big man! 1997-2011
I knew a-ha before i was born literally, i've always played this song, i search for first time this video when i was 14 and found nothing weird, then knew about metal, years and years, then searched on youtube funny sketches, knew about benny harvey and his youtube videos, then saw a sketch of him with real long hair and i think it was an iron maiden shirt playing this song having the same reaction as me when i heard this, then go again to hear and see this now, and found randomly this comment about him wich i never saw one before when i watched a lot this video, damn life is weird a.f
I'm thinking of you, Benny, as I watch the skyline of Manhattan fade into the night from the video. This song by a-ha, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the busy city, seems like something you would have appreciated. I still miss our conversations about life and your positive outlook on things. The lyrics discuss dreaming of another place and feeling disconnected from reality, which I sometimes feel since you passed. Even all these years later, songs like this transport me back to memories we shared. Thanks for always being there for me when times were tough. The skyline in the video reminds me of our time exploring New York City together. I'll always cherish those memories. You brought joy to many lives, and the world is less bright without you. I'll continue living with your optimism and zest for life inside me. Thanks for being such a true friend. Miss you, Benny Harvey.
That chorus + post-chorus is like a shot of pure adrenaline and emotion. How do you not sing your lungs out to that?? I can't believe I never listened to anything from this band past Take On Me until recently.
Lyrics Now!: We sit and watch umbrellas fly I'm trying to keep my newspaper dry I hear myself say "My boat's leaving now" So we shake hands and cry Now I must wave goodbye, wave goodbye Wave goodbye, wave goodbye Wave goodbye, wave goodbye You know I don't want to cry again I don't want to cry again I don't want to say goodbye I don't want to cry again I don't want to run away I don't want to race this pain I'll never see your face again Oh but how How can you say That I didn't try? You see things in the depths of my eyes That my love's run dry No I leave to their goodbyes I've come to depend on the look in their eyes My blood's sweet for pain The wind and the rain bring back words of a song And they say wave goodbye, wave goodbye Wave goodbye, wave goodbye Wave goodbye, wave goodbye You know I don't want to fall again I don't want to look this pain I don't want another friend I don't want to try again I don't want to see you hurt Don't let me see you hurt I don't want to cry again I'll never see your face again How can you say That I didn't try? You know I did You see things in the depths of my eyes My love's run dry I don't want to cry again So I read to myself A chance of a lifetime to see new horizons On the front page A black and white picture Of Manhattan skyline
Música de verdade... Depois de tanto tempo o som parece tão atual a diferença é a qualidade, a cada dia está mais raro encontrar talentos igual desses caras! A-ha como não amar?! 😍
I've said it once, I'll say it until I die. It doesn't matter where you find your music. It doesn't matter how it finds you. All that matters is that it's found. It's how music can stay alive long past their creators.
Not sure who Benny Harvey is but he sure did introduce a lot of people to this amazing song, has been one of my personal favourites since I first heard it like June 2023, A-ha ♥️🤘
The part about saying goodbye is so sad. Nothing imo is more depressing than the thought of people who you've met and know going away or never being able to see or contact them again, its pretty horrifying and so real to me. Makes me appreciate the internet helping that become less common.
You don't know someone's passing could break you until it happens. I don't think I'm the only person who's ever thought about how he'd react if a loved one dies, but it's *nothing* like how it actually strikes you down when you hear about it. Even years later, I'm still getting back up on my feet. I know he wouldn't have wanted me to get back up on my feet all by myself. R.I.P. Benny Harvey. Miss you big man.
This was my first favorite A-Ha song. Absolutely Perfect, I love it so much. As an american kid now, I never got to witness them in person, and likely wont get to, but they were my first band obsession.
Such a brilliant, unique and talented group of great singers, songwriter s & musicians in music. A-ha are amazing and one seriously underrated group. my best friend & I loved them since school and their music & charisma is undeniable. They are so talented!!!! Still woderful live & wish they'd tour again.💯👏🙏🙏🙏💚💚💚💚
I met Benny Harvey at a live showing of Adventure Call. He was brought up on stage, and he was easily the funniest caller of the night. Simply had to meet the man. We bonded quickly, and learned we had a lot more in common than just Adventure Call. We were both into metal and sketch comedy, but he really broadened my horizons. Helped me find who I am today. Taken too soon. RIP Benny Harvey, gone but not forgotten
He said he is missing you too and wants to pull you up to him. Be careful with buses next time you are out on street he wants you to be up there with him.
I remember that time me and my boy benny played mount and blade: warband, and boy he likes to name his character as "Jeremus" because it's his favorite companion in the game. Now he's gone, I wish you could play and see the new mount and blade with me again. Miss you big man, gone but not forgotten.
i actually have my own Benny Harvey in my life, who ironically likes this typa stuff, while i'm more of a Seo Taiji or Factory81 guy,but i love him so much,he's the one who always raises my spirit when i'm down Fabri,if you're reading this, ily big man
To me, the entire Scoundrel Days album, from beginning to end, is their best complete body of work!! A lot of people know them for their pop & commercial work in the 80's but as true A-ha fans, we know they're 20X more than 'Take on me'. Their songwriting, although mostly Paal on this album, has some serious undertones to it. They deal with some serious topics like suicide, murdering your partner then having to live with the guilt (I've been losing you). I personally appreciate their non- radio and non-commercial work way more than their commercial material. They had some early synth-pop success but I feel like they wrote the commercial stuff in order to break through into the music industry and then eventually being able to write what they truly wanted to write. You can obviously hear how serious this album is compared to their radio releases and videos. Side note: anyone else notice Morton, Paal and Mags never seem to age one bit? Holy hell, either all 3 have amazing genes or the water in Norway is sacred 😳 Moreover, Morton's voice is still on point. No cracks, scratchiness, etc..just as pure, powerful and pristine as it was back in '84 Keep rocking you Norwegian superstars you!! 😃😃😃😃😃
Indeed. This was their best album. As much as I love Hunting High And Low and Stay On These Roads, this was the only album where all the songs were great. A-ha were at their best when performing their understated, melancholic tunes rather than the teenybopper shite they're dismissed as....
Aye, caught them with my mate Benji at Yoker Fest '87, their single 'Wrong Way Down A One Way Street' was our song, played it at my wedding when he was my best man. RIP Benny Harvey, miss ye big man. Everytime I have a muffit of tea, I remember our times, good and bad.
Its hard putting this one on when it reminds me so much of Benny. Still, what a great song and one i wouldnt know about if it werent for him Miss ya big man. RIP
