In this clip from part 1 of our interview with former Canberra PR9 nav, Ken Delve, shares some brilliant stories from his time on the PR9, including when he and his pilot fell asleep, but thankfully they made an essential turn beforehand, so not to cause an international incident!

Fantastic Ken has a great fund of stories! I believe NASA still flies the Canberra-derived WB-57

Our Caberras were magnificent bombers throughout their operational employment with the Argentine Air Force! We lost a couple of them during asymmetric landing approach practice. One of these two accidents occurred to a Mk 2 modified to carry a weather radar. Later it was learned that the MINIMUM CONTROL SPEED in the AIR was lower than the one required after the modification made so the aircraft yawed and crashed.

I can verify the original of the 'Big Ben' photo. I was the Project Manager for the Canberra Sensor update (RADEOS) project at Bournemouth airport. We called the photo 'ten to one' , the time on Big Ben when the photo was taken over the IoW during one of the early flight trials. I was given a print to show the UK MoD Project manager ( we had a performance bond in our contract) His reaction was the same as many that Ken described. When I explained it was 'over the IoW' he asked to keep the photo to show his boss in MoD. Unfortunately, it contained Ephemeris Data, this project was classified 'Secret' at the time , hence the denial.

Saw a Canberra fly over school once, I was made up, pointing like Norfolk folk at a car.

Engine failure immediately after takeoff in the Canberra has a fatality rate of roughly 100%.

Makes you think why they allowed that small vertical fin to go in the aircraft. But in hindsight, back then they where not alone in sacrificing safety for a bit more performance.

I will never understand why the RAF retires aircraft just because they are old! After all you can hang anything off most kites!

G'day, Well, often times there are Airframe issues - Wing-Spars cracking or Tails falling off from Metal Fatigue..., other times the Engines are no longer supported by the Company which bought the Company which built them - and no more Spares are available...; and the same with Instruments... To say nothing of Political pressures to feed Contracts to the remaining Manufacturers - which "necessitate" shitcanning old Kit and replacing it with Bright and Shiny Landfill - For Thus, we Trashed the Earth...! It's TRADITIONAL, Olde Bean. Y'know - Peer-Group Pressure...; applied by Dead People...(!). Tally HO...,! Such is life, Have a good one... Stay safe. ;-p Ciao !
