A strong contender for the best hike in the Wanaka region! The Breast Hill Track can be found on the shores of Lake Hawea in the Hawea Conservation Park, about 20-25 minutes from Wanaka. From the Dingle Burn Road to Pakituhi Hut the track climbs a vertical 950m, with the first kilometre of track zig-zagging for 400 vertical metres before reaching a small saddle. Pakituhi Hut sits at ~1300m elevation and is located roughly 4.2km from Dingle Burn Road. From Pakituhi Hut it is a further 2.5 km and ~320m to the Breast Hill Summit. This isn’t a walk for the faint hearted, however the views over Lake Hawea and the Southern Alps make this one quite magical!
If you don't want to hike the whole trail, you get fantastic views at multiple points along the track. Hike up as far as you are comfortable, enjoy the views and then head back down :)
