Support SwitchUp by checking out Roguebook here bit.ly/SwitchUpRB We do like some hidden gem goodness! Rogueboom is a really good game here hopefully everything you need to know about it! Mark
Your channel gets a ton of engagement and comments while remaining pretty much toxic free. Credit to your team because fans often reflect the content creators!
Joe that's a bloody nice thing to say mate, appreciate it. I've noticed a similar trend since we started it's been really nice actually you get the occasional one or two but generally very nice community here. Mark
@@SwitchUpYt mark, you both have managed to create a community in which people are excited to share what they are playing. They feel heared and appreciated. I've gone to gamestop maybe 3 times this year and I've consistently walked out with games your channel has covered. Often, from the patched up video. My latest score was outer worlds for $20 brand new and physical.
Yes! Thank you for covering this! I must admit I expected this game to get a lot more attention than it has on Switch, based on its lineage and popularity on PC. It's been disheartening to see just how few channels have even mentioned it, much less reviewed it. Which is too bad, because this is a game I think a lot of Switch players would enjoy. For anyone still on the fence, this game does quite a bit to differentiate itself from other popular deckbuilders. The map/ink system is the most obvious difference, but you also have the two party system with all the various interactions and strategies that brings forward, plus a relatively deep gem system for upgrading cards. There's also a whole other class of cards known as "allies" that you can add to your deck. These summon a permanent ally which cannot be attacked and which will remain for the length of the battle. These allies tend to either attack enemies, shield you, or provide some other benefit, and are a pretty big game changer. You can build an entire deck strategy around allies alone. They're that good. Additionally, while most deckbuilders require players to keep a small deck in order to gain frequent access to the best cards, this game strongly encourages larger decks by tying super helpful skill unlocks to specific deck size thresholds. It really does get me thinking about things in a different way than games like Slay the Spire or Monster Train. Don't get me wrong, I love those too... but this is a breath of fresh air, and deserves far more attention than it has received. My thanks to the SwitchUp team for doing their part to help viewers find this hidden gem. Good stuff.
As a ex-MTG player, I bought this game straight on the spot when I saw the name “ RICHARD GARFIELD” in the descriptions. The exploring style kinda reminds me of the “Shandala” mode in old MTG PC game + faeria
With LOTS of time in Slay the Spire, this looks almost as incredible as the content you guys consistently put out! Congratulations on the quarter mil SwitchUp - well earned :)
As someone who has 1000 plus hours in slay the spire, this game has piqued my interest. It's because of this channel i have so many games on my Switch! Keep up the great work
I've loved this game on my switch! I agree with the SwitchUp team here, but performance has plagued me a bit where it takes 10sec or so for the card I selected to register on the screen. The shop text is incredibly hard for me to read in handheld and I wish they would incorporate a zoom feature. Still, amazing game despite my gripes.
There's one particular stage/boss encounter where it's significantly worse for that and the rest seems fine. I mentioned it briefly and I'm sure it will be an easy patch to implement. Mark
I'm on my 3rd run and 2nd run had large slowdowns every card I played and crashed when facing the final boss (legacy in menu still shows the run as being in progress, but everything else counts it as won) Combo was Seifer and that premium exclusive dude with the marks
sometimes it freezes and take ages to play cards on a decent pc. so many bugs, im surprised noone is talking about this. its not switch only, there have always been major problems since before launch that havent been addressed.
Indeed it is. Actually, I’d go as far as to say the first Steam world game (the tower defense one is even more so underrated since it never got re-released anywhere else.)
Ooh, that's a good one. You're right, Steamworld Quest is a game that rarely gets mentioned when this genre comes up, but really should get more attention. I really enjoyed it.
This gem wasnt on my radar until I saw your video. Seems to be totally my cup of tea. Very interested in this game. Thanks for the very informative video !!! Keep up the good content.
I’ve been searching the eShop on-and-off ever since I first first heard Rogue book was coming to the Switch. After playing Slay The Spire and trying to get into M:TG, I was REALLY excited to see this video in my sub feed. Now I know it’s out. I would be so grateful if I was the receiver of this game. If not, that’s okay. I’ll always be subscribed to and watch SwitchUp. Thanks.
My favorite SRPG that always stuck out to me was Vandal Hearts on the PS1. I loved the aesthetic, the storyline, the way blood splattered when an enemy got minced. The hard resets I'd have to do when I lost a character haha.
I havent heard of this one before, the vibrant colors and art direction come together creating a strong sense of fantasy adventure, and that really appeals to me in addition to being a card battler. I have a weak spot for knight and that sort of thing. It was hidden alright, and seems to be a gem as well from your description! Rogue like/lite card battler have become somewhat of a favorite genre for me as of late, i have always loved turn based strategic games. I recently Double dipped on Slay the spire on the switch, and have already put 110h+ into it. The gameplay is simply amazing but doesnt stand up to this in visuals charm. I have also played Griftlands, which i found to be good enough, but it does lack something. And also Steamworld Quest which i absolutely adore, fun gameplay, good story, interesting characters that also challanges gender stereotypes and tropes. I havent tried Monster Train yet, and from what i have heard it will occupy a good chunk of my time when i eventually do buy it.
Slay the spire when you want to suffer the challenge of deckbuilding, Monster Train when you want the comfiness of a chill card game. Either way you can´t go wrong with either of those.
Since you asked about card-based games, one that's been coming back into my mind a lot lately is Signs of the Sojourner. I've played through it twice, and it has some balance issues (e.g. the negative cards quickly overtake your deck, needs a NG+ mode so you can more easily explore different paths), but I loved the idea of using a card game as symbolism for communicating with others and the story's really stuck with me. It's been months since I played, but I was reading a cozy book recently, and it made me want to go just one more path through Signs of the Sojourner again.
The best card based rpg in my humble opinion is easily Slay The Spire. But I also enjoy Monster Train, both fantastic games and I can’t get enough of them.
I've added this to my wishlist, however have heard the text size in handheld is really small making it very hard to play. And since I only have a lite I'm probably going to wait until it gets patched, but the game looks right up my alley
I also only have a Lite, and haven't had much trouble reading things. At first I thought the text size of cards in the store was too small (something I've seen a few others mention), but then I realized I could click on each card to bring it up larger without automatically buying it. There are some bits of text on the smaller side (ie, if you go to the top bar and highlight your various relics), but I'm able to read it without any trouble. For context, my vision isn't perfect (I have issues glasses can't fix), so if I'm getting by with it, most people probably can. That said, maybe look up some Switch gameplay footage if you're unsure. Hopefully the devs will add a text size option in the future for those who need their text a bit larger.
@@nicked_fenyx Thanks for the input. It's good to know someone with a lite isn't having much difficulty with text size. I could get the game for my PlayStation 4, but having it on the go would be more enjoyable, I think
This game looks interesting but has the lag in the Switch version been patched by now? I mainly see complaints and regret from people who bought the game.
I've never played this kind of game before, I always just wrote them off as not for me. I just spent the weekend engrossed in Dorfromantik (I know it's not the same genre but it falls under the umbrella of "not for me" or at least did) and its opened my eyes so much to a huge world of games that might actually be for me. So, F you very much Dorfromantik, it's not like my backlog wasn't already huge :/ haha
I do love Slay the Spire but this looks like it takes that base formula and ramps it up to 11. I'd love it if this was set in the Keyforge world but can't ask for everything! Richard Garfield knocks it out the park time and time again! I'll be picking this up for sure!
I did a Kickstarter on this game and, though it had some rocky moments, the finished product on Steam has been enjoyable. I also like that I can play it on my MacBook. Still seems like it would be a great buy on the Switch. Thanks for covering it.
Slay the spire easily takes the cake for the best card based rpg, but inscryption and into the breach are probably my favourite strategic games that fit this general genre - just in case anyone wants to find similar games to STS and this!
Picked it up last week and have playing a TON of it. Roguelite deck builders are my favorite genre, so I’m biased, but I’m also picky with them. This one gets my stamp of approval.
Since I didn't play Roguebook yet my favourite card based RPG is Neoverse. I like the 3d anesthetic and how they handled the idea of magic - through radioactivity and heat.
This gives me massive Slay the Spire and Monster Train vibes which are personal favorites, but it’s good to hear that this game resolves the issue that i have with some versions of STS that being text size! Finally a game where I can read the cards without squinting or getting out of my chair
I loved StS, and MT but Shadowverse is so great, for hitting me with those Pokémon Trading Card from Gameboy vibes. More RPG mechanics, all the wandering around and getting into cars battles, don’t miss playing Shadowverse
The way you uncover land really reminds me of Age of Empires back in the dizay, procedural generation in its infancy so to speak and when you stumble across an enemy encampment in the shadows of uncertainty with your scout/ranger you frantically click back to flee and hope you weren’t seen. Love it!!!
Great review. Looks up my alley! My fave card based RPG, I will substitute *dice* for cards, but I feel the outcome is quite similar: Dicey Dungeon - a criminally underrated and overlooked game on the Switch, its pretty amazing. This game looks amazing! I'd love to be in the running for a copy of it. Thanks again for all your quality, top-tier content. You all help me sort through the many many options of how I can spend my free time on my Switch. Switch UP is at the top and rising.
I love Dicey Dungeon but I still haven't beaten the Witch levels because I absolutely HATE that character 😑 ... I need to go back and try because I want to unlock the final character but the Witch is the only one that isn't fun to me and it's really difficult.
Sooo glad I didn't get this on the XSX. Looks like a splendid time. Adding to wishlist now due to a full backlog and very little time...adulting sucks!! But my favorite card-based srpg is probably Steam Quest: Hand of Gilgamech (I think I got that right) - fantastic game w/ superb replayability!
I would say my favourite has got to be Monster Train. Been really enjoying Steamworls Quest as well. Obviously Slay the Spire is fantastic, but for whatever reason I hit a huge wall in that and don't find myself returning to it nearly as much as Monster Train. Banners of Ruin is also... Okay.
Good work on this, this has been on my wishlist on steam for the last like 2 years it feels like, may just buy this on switch now. Sadly I haven't played many great card rpgs, other than slay the spire. One step from eden is fantastic if you can do fast pace and tell what your cards are.
Monster Train for me I absolutely loved that one. I actually enjoy it more than Slay The Spire only problem was it wasn’t long enough. Rogue book looks like another winner to me
If you enjoy tabletop card games, might I also recommend Wingspan? Beautiful artwork, relaxing sound effects, and surprisingly deep strategy make it a real gem. It's one of those "easy to learn, hard to master" type games. Also, they're releasing an expansion tomorrow, so there are bundles, etc available to save a bit of cash if you like this sort of game.
Bought this on PC the day it prelaunched and spent 50 hours in back then Love the hell out of this. I prefer it to Slay The Spire and I spent a shit ton of time with that too. They've added more content now so I should go back.
This is a very sweet game love it!! But I really don’t recommend this for the switch at all, the performance rate for playing cards becomes tedious :(. Ended up getting it for the ps5 and it there’s a slight hiccup when playing cards too but not as much as the switch :(.
So far Slay the Spire is number one but I’m looking forward to playing this game. I art work looks great and the character designs are very impressive.
Put this on my wish list and my favourite card based rpg is Baten Kaitos on the GameCube - hope that gets a remake/remaster or the GameCube games go on the Nintendo switch online at some point.
This game looks awesome. I love deck building games like qwent and B'n'D...this looks like Hades and Steamworld Quest Hand of Gilgamech combined, looking forward to this one!
I absolutely love card games. Slay the spire is super addictive, but not in a frustrating way. HUGE MtG fan since I was 8 years old so I've had my little eye on this for a while now. Keep up the good work guys, I've been subbed for years. X
My favorite in this genre is SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech. I really love steamworld's artwork. And also Neoverse Trinity Edition has to be a guilty pleasure of mine. I mean, waifus and card games nuff said.
I love this. Anything with Richard Garfield’s name on it, I tend to throw money at. I loved slay the spire, and played a fair share of Gwent and this is different enough from both of those games that I am super excited to give it a go! Thanks SwitchUp!
My favorite is monster train love that you have to put people on different levels to stop the enemy. How the track works with different paths. But this looks good with the open map and having to uncover it with only limited supply's to do so. Makes every run abit different.
I remember when this game came out on PC, I couldn't wait to see if it came out on my preferred console, the Switch. Hope to get my paws on a copy soon. Thanks for the great content, keep up the great work!
I saw this on the e-shop new releases and it immediately caught my attention, I was looking around to see if there was any review yet and here you are guys! Great as usual!
Anything I've seen on this one so far says the text size is tiny, and that they have ran into major slow-downs and bugs. You are saying the opposite, has there been a patch recently? I want to get this game but am hesitant on the issues I've seen about thus far
I didn't even know it comes up on switch. I'd love to play this on the go. The arwork is amazing and i like how characters have a little synergies with one another
I've never really played deck building games, didn't seem my thing, but this looks quite interesting! I like the graphics style, looks colourful! Thanks for highlighting this one! 👍
Did they patched the game or something? Because I got it on release and one issue I had was there was a slight lag when playing the cards in battle. If that got fixed I don’t mind trying out the game again.
Great video, I’ve been eyeing this one since I noticed it in the recent releases section on the eshop. I just picked up griftlands in the latest eshop sale and haven’t put it down since, it scratches my slay the spire itch but I really like that it’s narratively driven as well as a roguelike!
Whenever I see games like this it makes me wish Baten Kaitos would get a Switch port, that and Lost Kingdoms are what started my love for card based RPGs.
game was released in a very buggy state and remains very buggy to date. it was so bad they "offered" refunds which were denied even though they said they would refund regardless of playtime. then they gave the paid dlc for free (it released with $40 day one dlc) so early backers got nothing extra and then they released more dlc.
My back log is out of hand Mark ! This was posted 2 years ago I picked this game up after watching this. Started playing a couple days ago its very good , thinking about my next run , when I have to do anything else 😂
I've been holding off on this one since it was released on the steam because I knew it was coming to switch. The switch to me is the absolutely best platform to play deck builders, so excited it finally got released on switch! Slay the spire is probably my favourite deck builder but as it's already so well known I'd like to toss out Steam World Quest. Humour in the Steam World Games is so well done, and it's kind of fun to play a deck builder with a story instead of the the roguelike formula form time to time.
I've watched tons of streamer content on this when it launched on Steam, so happy it's finally on Switch so I can get my hands on it. Glad to hear you guys love it, I'm still a little bit on the fence about the map/brush/ink system. After the large disappointment that was Banners of Ruin (way too many too complex mechanics, now even more with the free dlc), this is gonna be the deck builder roguelite I've been waiting for since StS!
I was severely addicted to Loop Hero when it came out. Unfortunately, once you beat the game, there isn't much to come back to. But the right was fantastic while it lasted.
Ive been addicted to slay the spire, but my all time favourite card game has to be thronebreaker, followed closely by steam quest. I just get addicted to card based games. They just have a magic that gets me going!
This is yet another reason the switch is an amazing system, we get games like this, a game I’ve put some time in now is neo verse trinity collection, at first I thought it was slay the spire knockoff but these games keep showing just the right amount of differences to be fresh!
Wow nice surprise and what a gem it looks like! Rogue lites have quickly become my favorite genre and I really hope rogue legacy 2 comes to switch because I’ll double dip on that for sure. Thanks for the review I’ll favorite this and pick it up eventually no doubt.
I'm super interested in this, one of my fav card game on the switch is Faeria. I loved the extra strategy of having to lay donwn your own tiles. I also really liked steamworld quest. I didn't even know that this was out, så thanks for the heads up
Reminds me a lot of Magic the Gathering, which was always my favorite strategy card game, and that is a very good thing. It's nice that it has large print too, because these eyes are old.
The best card based is Slay the Spire. I’ve got it on Switch, Xbox, iPad and iPhone, it’s just one of those games you’ve gotta have. Roguebook looks like it could be great.
I was addicted to Loop Hero too until I beat it 😔 ... I definitely felt like I got my money's worth but man, it was sad to actually get to the end of that game because I wanted it to just keep going.
Ooh, this is going right into my backlog!!! Btw, thanks for the recent for Scourge Bringer, such a fun and addictive game. Tough as nails, too. Kind of like a 2d pixel art version of Returnal.
This is right up my boulevard! I rinsed all heckins out of slay the spire and faeria's been on the wishlist for a while. This goes straight to the top of the list! Also gives me Battle Chasers Nightwar vibes which is a bonus
Maybe i missed mentioned in the vid: does it have touch controls? The main reason griftlands doesn’t see play on my switch is because for card games i want to blob on my bed like jabba the hutt and use as few buttons as possible. I have 200 hours in slay the spire and like 60 in monster train. Love em both and will check this out most likely. Fav card game on switch is Shadowverse. Closest thing ive found to the old pokemon tcg gameboy game. Not a roguelike, more akin to hearthstone or yugioh
My favorite card-based RPG has to be Shadowverse: Champion’s Battle! I was obsessed with the battle system and how customizable it was, with all the different classes that actually changed up your play style, and hundreds of different cards so I could really make a deck that I liked using. I actually played that game for 70+ hours which is not something I do with RPGs often. I’d love to play another card-based RPG now! :)
No doubt one of fav games of all time is slay the spire on the switch. Spent so many hours in it and cleared almost everything. It gave me the magic feel and i also wish there was magic on the switch. This game looks awesome
