When painting in oils, a painter must add linseed oil to the pigment so that the paint will adhere to the canvas. When a painter thins his pigments to transparent washes with mineral spirits or turpentine, without incorporating linseed oil, as Rothko is said to have done, the paint will eventually dry to to be simply colored dust, once the moisture evaporates. Rothko's technique and misuse of materials is said to have contributed to the fading and and eventual disintegration of some paintings. It is disappointing that the speaker did not discuss this in his remarks on Rothko.

This lecture was also great when I saw it as a BBC presentation by someone else - who cribbed off whom?

Dr James Fox. BBC 4 2012. This lecture 2014. If these dates are accurate we can only categorically say that Dr Fox 🦊 definitely didn’t crib and the other presentation might be copied, in part, from the TV programme .........but when you are a PhD in Art History I’m sure you can come to similar conclusions on your own! Anyway, exploring art history using colour as a theme is engaging and makes a change from chronological or stylistic themes. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

No one who says Velasqwez can possibly be considered an expert on art.

How else would you say Velasqwez? It sounded fine to me. It is how you would expect an well bred, educated Englishman to say the name.
