@@noahfaber8265 My buddy went to Fun Fun Fun fest and they played like 4 songs. A few friends and me drove down to Corpus Christi to this tiny ass bar on Veterans Day a couple days after FFF. They played about 13 songs for about 2hrs. It was amazing. Seen them quite a few times now. Love my Gojira! \m/
Red is a metal album or proto metal or whatever. It is heavy. Their live work from that era is even heavier. John Wetton probably the best bassist Crimson ever had and that list includes Tony Levin and Greg Lake.
The Black Sabbath riff is still the heaviest imo. I just try to put myself in the shoes of someone hearing that for the first time ever in the early seventies and I try to think of the reactions people had to it
More modern metal bands have a whole arsenal of effects and production techniques at their disposal to make their music heavier. Black Sabbath though managed to take basically the same equipment as the Beatles and the Stones and write something so heavy with it that they needed a whole new name for it.
FlipperDoigt703 i was pleasant surprised too for putting death on the list. I was also surprised he put scar Symmetry on the list. I love both death and scar symmetry
@@tekdrudge I still think the whole copyright thing is kinda stupid. Nobody is 100% original and everybody gets their inspiration from this collective world of music (culture). Idea's don't flow out of nothing, why pretend like you own this specific subset of notes. Eh
I love how you can seem to play anything completely effortlessly EXCEPT you needed to read tabs for Tool. As a Tool fan I take it as a proof of how unique they are.
And the fact it was YYZ makes it even more badass. Many Rush songs require a pretty high skill level. They are still one ultimate underdog bands, thats why I love them. But I think there is an ongoing debate if they are truly metal. I think some of their earlier work could definitely be metal, based on the definition of metal in the 70s. They went on a complex musical genre journey, becoming more hard/progressive rock in the 80s. RIP Neil....
@@yanikotavov385 they are definitely underrated. They aren't even that famous how can they be overrated? They are more influential than famous. What bands do you like?
@@PedroYippeekayaye Huh what? Lol not at all. I have short hair, hear to Gothic music, also electronic but still call myself a Metalheads bcs that's a big part of my life.
Ah yes, King Crimson's Red. Some of the most metal prog rock on the planet. Also thanks for the Gojira, first for that on this channel. Edit: Skin o' my teeth was a very interesting choice. And yes the Grand Conjuration is a solid one for Opeth, although I am a bigger fan of the older albums it's still a really good song and imo the best one off Ghost Reveries.
@@BradleyHallGuitar Well yeah Ghost Reveries is probably the most critically acclaimed Opeth album so yeah. It probably is my fault but I find that after knowing how "dark" ghost of perdition is supposed to be lyrically, I find it a bit lacking. Then again I've only heard the album once so yeah I'm not giving it a fair chance.
@@SaintFranssoix Yeah I don't remember which one had higher ratings, which is why I said probably. That being said Ghost Reveries did have really high ratings too.
@@SaintFranssoix Also, I see you also had the idea of putting what I presume to be your face into the sun of the mountain on the Magma album art, I did the same and it's my profile photo in the Sweepman Discord lol
U are all noobs XD the first metal song was "u really got me" from the Kings. First song with powerchords and a distorted sound and played in metal style. That was 1964. The first time a band get the brand heavy metal is was Cream. The first heavy metal band named so was Blue Cheer. We all know this "heavy metal thinger" from steppenwolfs born to be wild song, this was the first time the word pop up in lyrics. Hendrix clear was inviter of distorted sound in a new context and is and influenced metal massive. Did u know Alice Cooper with his Band had his album out in 1969? Iron Butterfly, two albums 1968. Other artist not so popular i not will name now but Black Sabbath was sure not the first heavy metal band. People got knowledge from music will also realize BS is no typical rock band because they more was an unconventional jazz-/jazz-rock band.
@@ulrichbergmann1347 LOL.. The Kinks? Mate, metal is more than just distortion. Otherwise the majority of rock and punk would be metal too. U really got me is proto-punk if anything.
@@ulrichbergmann1347 you really got me was a leap in heaviness but it was not even close to metal jimi Hendrix and the kinks helped set out a path for more extremity Led zepplin helped create a heavier proto metal sound Black sabbath brought metal into existence judas priest basicly defined it And Venom paved the way for more extreme sub genres ( this was my opinion but black sabnath defently were the first)
You, sir, have a great taste in music! Great selection of not the most well-known riffs (for the most part), which evokes curiosity and desire to find out more. I salute you!🧐
@@ImpostorModanica trivium Its my absolute favorite album of all time and only 1 other one comes close (and thats the end of heartache by killswitch engage) The best song on the shogun album is "into the mouth of hell we march" so id start with that one
@@jkvdv4447 randy rhoads riffs were good and simple. Bands in recent years worry too much about complexity that they end up repeating albums. That’s why most are sell outs
Playing King Crimson's Red and Rainbow's Man on the Silver Mountain for this type of video would automatically result in an instant like from me. Otherwise, some very interesting and quite unexpected choices!
Hell yeah bro, all metal is good metal \m/! Everybody’s got their own opinions and preferences about it and there’s something for everyone :) Personally, what defines something as metal FOR ME is how hard hitting it can sound. It can groove and build up tension, make you wanna go outside and like fight a tree or just do something ACTIVE to get all of the energy out, while keeping the spirit of the music alive which is something I truly appreciate about the art form. It’s part of the reason why I love newer bands like After the Burial and Wage War, they just bring the heat and bring it HARD!
For me, I can’t deal with the heavier stuff. I tend to stick around nu metal, a little thrash, and whatever the hell genre Slipknot wants to be considered. I mostly listen to Slipknot, Mushroomhead, recently FFDP, Disturbed, Ozzy, and A7X. There may be a few bands I left out but this should give a good idea as to the metal I listen to the most.
I somewhat agree. During the 90’s things got more experimental and inaccessible. Just writing catchy songs stopped being the goal somewhere along the way.
I had a second listen to this and it is absolutely awesome. Thanks for posting and please post many more. Your playing style and tone are second to none. Thanks again
The battery riff is without a doubt my favourite riff ever. Something about it is just so damn satisfying to hear. Also, you are one of the most entertaining guitarists to watch. Loved the video. Haha.
The video was amazing! I was expecting some doom metal in the early 00's, but thinking about it, doom is more like a mood setting than a riff extravaganza. I don't know if was on purpose, but the YT ads was placed in the end of the video. This was very respectful and because of this, I watched both ads to help the channel. I wish everyone was this respectful on YT!
I love the 80's and 2000's riffs personally. Then Again the Late 90's and Early 2000's I discovered Metal. I fell in love with Ozzy and Metallica and discovering the new stuff at the time.
I agree with that, but I think it's kinda their fault for not doing practically anything to connect with people. If you check their social media it only consists in posting tour dates and merch while other bands share a lot of content with people. It's almost as if they wanted to stay low
@@Djerov2 Van Halen were more Pop Metal than Glam Metal, but given their debut came out in 1978, that was pretty metal for the time. They have more metal than people care to realise. As for AC/DC, they are pretty much the embodyment of Hard Rock, like Metal's little brother. Metalheads back then still loved AC/DC and were often still associated with Metal. We just later disassociated them with the genre. As for Rush, they were pioneers of Progressive Metal and went full on Metal in the 2000s. YYZ's opening riff alone was pretty heavy which is probably why he played it. Their early work from their first few albums were also classic metal.
Pretty cool to see children of bodom on here! Actually my introduction to metal when I got into a concert of theirs for free on accident. Never listened to any metal before but it was a life changing experience. Been listening to it since!
Okay I am a big fan of Gojira and mostly listen to modern metal, but 70's Rainbow... Wow they were great. Definetly the most iconic riffs in this list for me.
Killer video best rundown of the history of metal I've seen Really enjoyed how you went symphony x into dragonforce showed how the solo was coming back around that time Damn COB Downfall was 1999 I'm definitely getting old
Trying to write a riff medley that at once flowed and included songs reflective of their time and included both famous tracks and deep cuts … a daunting task. Props for attempting the impossible!
Also, what would be catchy for you, other than Metal made to be like that? For example, Black Metal and Death metal were never "catchy", since the beggining
That entire time I was getting more and more disappointed for no Mastodon, and then I hear that chunky/funky (chfunky?) Last Baron riff hit at 8:23. Totally worth that wait
At the Gates literally changed Metal in the 90s with their album 'Slaughter of the Soul' and that has some killer riffs. There should have been atleast and honorable mention of Nu Metal, metalcore , doom/stoner and deathcore riffs.
"At the Gate-core" to most people in the metal listening community. They were certainly revolutionary and it's not their fault a bunch of scene kid/screamo bands decided to use them as an influence. People like to say stuff like that(usually the "metal died in the 80s" crowd) without being intellectually honest and looking at the Army of absolute shit bands the big 4 and Sabbath influenced. Every trendsetter has a trail of wannabes that follow after them but it is clear that some REALLY good bands were products of the styles of all those bands. At the Gates included.
@@kennyhouser3467 I listen to plenty of modern metal actually. Ulcerate happens to be one of my favorite bands. And yes I am familiar to what the Big 4 inspired, so I'm not surprised they deteriorated in quality as well lol, St. Anger. Doesn't change the fact that the red in sky is ours is a masterpiece far superior to lazy and not mentally stimulating music and riffs marketable to masses lacking and any artistic ambition who still for the most part can't ingest a true death metal sound. Many "melodeath" fans are this way
