Purdue basketball specializes in recruiting players who are 7-foot-2 and taller, with at least one on their roster for each of the last 10 years and more coming soon. How did they corner the market on giants like Zach Edey?

Purdue was a clock operator starting the clock on time up by 2 points in the elite 8 against Virginia who won it all 5 years ago - batted the ball out past half court on a purposely missed free throw and somehow scored to send it into OT - all supposedly in the span of 4 seconds. And yeah Haarms was on the team but he wasn't a focal point he honestly had nothing to do with the success he was really frail. It wasn't a good team cuz it had a big - it was a good team cuz Carsen Edwards was a beast ... and cuz Ryan cline went ham in sweet 16 against Tennessee. But it was a good team regardless we won the big 10 that season for carsen's 2nd big 10 championship. Just wanted to add this to disprove that Matt painter needs a center to win. Also, my class, baby boilers, were supposed to win ncaa championship in 2010 and 2011, we were Vegas faves until Robbie Hummel tore both acl's - neither of those teams had a dominance center - jajuan johnson was dominant but he was frail and was just a normal center size wise probably 6'11" lanky with a deep shot (wasn't really a post play guy - he actually could play some power forward). Just wanted to note some teams cuz painter does NOT need a dominant center to win - he can win with anyone who is halfway decent. He gets low ranked recruits and turns them into contenders no matter what. He's got 7 sweet 16's in 19 years, 7 big 10 championships in 19 years, etc etc.

It’s because the 7 footers at Purdue aren’t just treated as side shows who are “just tall”. They’re developed really well and integrated into the offense. Not every college does that

Matt Ten Dam in the 90s, too. Didn't play a lot but was a fan favorite.

Its pretty clear what the pitch is. At what other school is a 7 foot+ traditional big going to be the focal point of the offense. Lots of these centers have considerably improved over their careers and greatly outperformed their high school expectations. Of those guys you named only Matt Haarms wasn't an All-Big Ten player and all the players you named besides Hammons were starting centers on Big Ten championship teams (I'm not counting Berg in this yet). This also doesn't consider the success Purdue has had with more traditionally sized centers like JaJuan Johnson, Caleb Swanigan and Trevion Williams.

3:38 I don't know, that might be exagerated but Matt Painter is 6'6''. Looking at it again he isn't as tall as the picture but he is still taller than people would likely realize.

Your really underrating how good AJ Hammons and Isaac Haas were. Matt Haarms wasn't as good, but was still a solid player who had his moments.

It goes back way farther than that. Go back to Joe Barry Carrol, Russel Cross etc. those guys were not all 7 fters, but WERE traditional dominate centers. Purdue is very good at developing those guys

Painter takes the time to Coach them up. Takes these guys 4 years to truly develop. Keeps them around. John Wooden (Purdue Grad) did the same.

He is funny, but would have come across better if he actually did research. Not difficult in this day and age cause this very question of "why big guys at PU" has been asked of Painter on camera like 30x per season.
