A history of rock and roll played on a keyboard

A medley of keyboard parts from famous songs from the 1950's through today, played straight through in one take. About 70 songs in all. Touching on all popular styles from fun 50s boppin' rock, to the breakthrough 60s, the transitional 70s, the synthesized 80s, the grungy 90s, and polished aughts. This is a single performance, but I edited the sounds to try to more closely reflect the original recordings.

Fun Medley! I'm a keyboardist myself, and a few of these tunes, particularly the prog rock ones, are not easy to play! Also a good job at finding patches that approximate the original sound. Thanks for sharing; it gave me some ideas for songs to learn.

This is Brilliant!!! Just wondering. Did anyone notice how simplistic and almost boring the compositions and parts became as the the songs got closer to the times we live in today? The 50's, 60's, 70's and arguably the 80's were magical for those who practiced and loved their craft. This is a testament to what so many have been saying throughout the years. I'm glad I grew up when I did. Brilliant!

This a great example of what a keyboard purchase is all about. Paying $999 for an 88 key Korg, great buy, but it doesn't allow seemless switching from one patch to another like your Kurzweil. People wanting to go beyond a piano to a workstation need to be asked this question, if they are gigging and need something that flows, then it's going to cost $. Great playing very awesome!
@MVWDave
@MVWDave 7 лет назад
Agreed. I've had other keyboards that specialized in this and that, but for gigging, flow is so important. The "banks" feature on the Kurzweil has been invaluable. Thanks for the comment.

I don't think I can do any of them justice enough to record and share my take, so I'll probably just keep playing that music for fun, but you never know. I'm always trying to get better.

Great video! I will say that your killer playing still can't hide the fact that this keyboard doesn't sound that great. The tambre of the Kurzweil is OK but it sounds so digital I was surprised.
@MVWDave
@MVWDave 2 года назад
I can't really argue with that. I got the keyboard a few years back for gigging. It's lightweight and has a lot of sounds, but the sounds are dated. Planning an upgrade soon. (Thank you for the comment on my playing)
@joesynthzer

Very good job, very fun and instrutive to watch! Two things call my attention right away: First, the immense and diversified arsenal of organs, acoustic pianos and synthesizers, once distributed over a large number of keyboard instruments, became ready-made presets and immigrated to a single platform. (You may agree or disagree with the quality of the timbres, but that's another matter); Second, the great decline in the quality of performance techniques and the impoverishment of the harmonies used are visible (and audible) after few decades. The rich rhythmic and harmonic heritage of jazz and blues, which comes from pioneers like Charles and Peterson, and will enrich the experimental or pop strand of Manzarek, Emerson, Joel or John, is now abandoned. It gives way to that "silly minimalism" of Coldplay and other groups, which uses and abuses those bland, musically short-sighted ostinatos that today serve as fun and challenge to 10 year-old piano students. Thanks for sharing!!
@MVWDave
@MVWDave 7 лет назад
Agreed on many fronts. As far as the quality of the timbres, they varied quite a bit for the internal keyboard sounds. I replaced some of the stock sounds with external samples. Some worked better than others, but undoubtedly someone who is more skilled and knowledgable of sampling could do better. Even though my keyboard isn't that old, it's a couple (at least) generations behind. These days they come with multi-gig sample libraries, and I'm sure it will only go more in that direction. I'm never completely satisfied with keyboards (especially for reproducing the piano playing experience - both in feel and sound), but having the ability (especially during a gig) to call up a hundred or more different instruments at the touch of a button is pretty cool. Thanks so much for your input. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.

What key are you doing Ballad of Billy the Kid in? It was great, but I usually do it in a different key.
@MVWDave
@MVWDave 6 лет назад
Hi Bryan. I'm playing it in G. If memory serves, I think that's the original key, but I've played it in other keys before to accommodate singers. What key do you play it in? I tried it in F# once (not easy).

What keyboard is this, if you can recommend it? I want to get into playing the synth, but don't want to spend too much money, nor do I want a cheap quality one I will have to upgrade. I realise this is probably a stupid question due to the range from a non-touch sensitive poor sound quality one for less than £100 to something like a Nord 2, but I have no way to judge keyboards on amazon without a starting point.

This is a Kurzweil PC3LE8. You can get one on eBay for around $1500, maybe less elsewhere (Guitar Center used, etc.) They are no longer available new, as Kurzweil has added newer models to replace it. It suits my needs for the most part, but I consider it a compromise. It has decent sounds across a wide range of instruments for a wide range of styles. I record on computer a lot, and find myself using external samples to replace my sounds as the sounds available using software are generally better. The physical touch of the keyboard is responsive. I always give my main keyboard what I call the "Angry Young Test." If I can play the Prelude section of Angry Young Man by Billy Joel, I consider the keys responsive enough. If there is lag, I pass. The compromise is it's not a true piano feel, or a true organ feel, or even a true synth feel. So, sometimes when playing parts that require a certain kind of touch, it falls a bit short. Synth solos in particular are tough. The key press is too deep to play fast synth parts. So, in general I would say it's a good all around keyboard. If you want a keyboard to emulate a piano, there are better ones (Kawai has good reviews). Nords generally have a good rep, and even some of the higher end Kurzweils, but they are pricey. I hope that helps. Please feel free to ask a follow up if I didn't adequately answer your question.

Hey, I have an LE8 too, what patch did you use for Strawberry Fields Forever? It didn't sound like the preset one in the keyboard
@MVWDave
@MVWDave 7 лет назад
I recorded audio and MIDI and replaced some of the sounds with external virtual instruments. I believe I used the one of the Native Instruments samples on that sound and EQ'd it to try to get it close to the original. There are probably more accurate VIs out there. East West has a Fab Four instrument pack that's supposed to have a pretty good facsimile of the original flute mellotron. www.soundsonline.com/Fab-Four

How do you change to next preset? Is this setup in advance and triggered in a certain way at the start of new song?
@MVWDave
@MVWDave 8 лет назад
Yes. The keyboard has banks which each hold 10 different sounds. I set them up so I can advance between sounds (program or combi) with a second foot pedal. Then when I get to the end of the 10 sounds, I have to hit a button on the panel of the keyboard (you can see me doing that a few times in the video) to advance to the next bank.

When you play the organ pieces it seems like you don't get the fast enough attack you'd want ideally - presumably because it's a hammer action keyboard? Just wondering if there is a key response curve setting on the Kurzweil or not. I have a Nord Stage 2 which compromises by triggering at the lightest touch when playing the organ section. It's still not as responsive as playing an organ keyboard, but a good compromise when you have to play a mixture of piano and organs with only 1 deck available! Great playing BTW - thanks for sharing!
@MVWDave
@MVWDave 6 лет назад
Thank you. That's a good question. I need to check into the key response more, because it was all sort of a compromise. The keys are lighter than piano keys but heavier than organ keys and the response is wrong for both of them. I have other keyboards but this is the one that's closest to what I needed to pull this off with some degree of success on one keyboard. Overall, how do you like the Nord?

Which keyboard is it? And how are you changing the patches ? I didn't see your hands pressing any keys top keys...
@MVWDave
@MVWDave 8 лет назад
+Anirvan Ray It's a Kurzweil Pcle3. I change the patches with a foot pedal. I can keep ten patches per bank on the keyboard. Every once in a while, you'll notice I do hit a button on the keyboard with my left hand to change banks.

I own this exact model of keyboard and I didn't know this trick for changing between presets with a pedal. I keep my preferred programs for each song saved under appropriate names and consecutive program numbers, but it's still difficult to scroll through to find the next one quickly in a live situation. Looks like I might have to read the manual!

Im new to keyboard and I want to ask whoever is more experienced in this to help me with tabs. Is there any app/website like there is ultimate guitar tabs for guitar where you can search for a song and get instructions how to play it? I'm willing to learn some specific songs and simply by watching someone play it I ofc can't catch it all. Any help is welcome, thanks :)
@MVWDave
@MVWDave 7 лет назад
I'm not aware of any website like that, though I'm sure there are some. Depending on your goals, I think it's good practice to try to learn a song or part of a song by ear. To help me with this, I sometimes use a software tool called "Song Surgeon" which can slow down the audio without changing the key. It also has an equalizer which can help isolate the tone of the instrument you're trying to learn. It's not perfect, but it can help if you're having trouble with a piece. The speed doesn't usually give me as much trouble as the fact that the part is buried in a mix. In that case, an equalizer can sometimes help, though sometimes not. Otherwise, I think a search for something like "(your song here) chart" or "(your song here) chords" would probably pull up some useful results. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

How do you change the keyboard from voice to voice without touching the controls?
@MVWDave
@MVWDave 9 лет назад
I have several banks of sounds that I preset on my keyboard. I use a foot-pedal (my left foot) to change between sounds within the bank. Every so often you may notice I reach up with my left hand and quickly hit a button on the keyboard. That's to change between banks. I think I had to do that 2 or 3 times.
