A Homemade Submarine, Ireland 1966

A Clare garage owner is building his own one man submarine.
County Clare has a long association with the submarine. Engineer John Philip Holland from Liscannor developed the first one to be formally commissioned by the US Navy in 1875. Now James Tierney from Corofin has made his own submarine. ‘Newsbeat’ went to Lake Inchiquin, where James Tierney was giving his home made vessel a trial voyage.
This submarine is made of four strong steel barrels powered by a twenty four volt battery and a starter motor from a bus.
James Tierney tells reporter Bill O’Herlihy how he has turned his idea into a working vessel including the precautions he has taken should something go wrong while he is under water. The plan is to have the vessel ready to go under water next Spring.
James Tierney’s wife Mary fully supports her husband in his venture and says she would love to go down in the submarine but only if she could swim.
I think it is marvellous a lot of people talk of doing those things but they never seem to finish them or try to do them.
This episode of ‘Newsbeat’ was broadcast on 4 November 1966. The reporter is Bill O’Herlihy.

According to the wife he's a good swimmer. And with 10 children, good swimmers is clearly a genetic trait with him. 😀

@@Bialy_1 I was kid in the '60s and early '70s. In the large families I grew up amongst I saw more hardship than happiness. Many of the older children flew the nest to the UK or US at the first opportunity, usually in their late teens. I could tell of horror stories in a few local cases where the social services such as they were back then had to intervene. It was worse in earlier generations. My mother's first cousin was reared with her; he was one of the youngest of 12 in his family where they were only able to feed him on white loaf soaked in tea. My grandmother took him in reckoning he would have died of malnutrition otherwise. The father of this family of 12 was happy out. Played the fiddle and sang a song at any given opportunity and lapped up the applause while his wife always had a haunted look and various nervous ticks by the time I knew them. As you mention the older kids rearing the younger ones, my next door neighbour did that as she was the eldest in a family of nine. Most of her siblings got an education and therefore got to lead what she regards as more fulfilling lives. She resents it to this day and her late mother told her of her guilt and sorrow that it had to happen. If you were part of a very large and happy family, good for you. Treasure it. It wasn't a universal experience though.

My Irish friend said something like this when telling me about changing her nursing training from Ireland to Scotland. She said. We all get a bit of training nurses doctors etc and then we just learn the rest as we go along. Someone will ask us if anybody fancies trying a bit of Brain surgery. Then someone will put their hand hand up and say “oh me me!” Don’t know how true this is mind 😊 bless the lovely Irish ☘️

It is true that the first man to built and sail the first modern type submarine was an Irishman a very fine fellow called John Philip Holland, born in 1841, Liscannor, Co Clare, He inventor the modern submarine. He designed and built the first underwater vessel accepted by the U.S.A. Navy. & that is a recorded fact
