Shane Burcaw (he/him) is the author of several award-winning books about disability. He is the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah Burcaw (she/her) graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog, which has over 800,000 subscribers on RU-vid. Hannah has spoken at prestigious universities and Fortune 500 companies alike about the realities of ableism. On her popular Instagram account, she advocates for acceptance of all people and works to improve the way society thinks about disability.
Shane and Hannah have been together for over four years. They got married in September of 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic in their backyard, with their officiant conducting the ceremony via Zoom. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.

Have either of you ever lost a friend (or multiple) because of your relationship? I’m not in an interabled relationship , but I am in an interracial, inter-cultural, and at one point interfaith relationship. When my husband and I got married, I lost multiple friends because they didn’t like my decision. I’m wondering if it’s the same for you guys.

Hannah's reaction to Shane's re-creating her choking sounds was hysterical... I watched it 3 times! I also want to comment on the conversation about "inspirational porn" which is a term I'd never heard. Etiquette question. If I were to meet you in person, customarily I’d shake your hand. What is the proper or preferred way to greet Shane? Also, if I’d just met you both, would I continue stand up straight to converse with both of you, or bend over or stoop down more to Shane’s level?

This is a good question, and obviously I'd want to let Shane and Hannah answer it themselves... but in case they don't see it, I'd assume that to greet Shane you'd just say hello 😁 and I wouldn't worry about stooping/not stooping. I think the best thing is to not overthink it! I doubt Shane does.

@@joycedominguez1828 I'm not disabled but I usually just act like I would talking to anybody else when meeting disabled people. Don't change my voice or get in people's personal space ect. The only time I would bend down or crouch to someone in a chair would be because of excessive background noise to be able to hear or for them to hear me just like I would lean in a bit closer to able bodied person. The only time I change how I act would be purely for better communication purposes like for example talking to a deaf person requires a change in communication so extra care would be taken to ensure the message was clear

Thank you for bringing up the “inspiration porn” topic. I have probably been guilty of this because I truly do find inspiration from people doing mundane things. I suffer from severe depression and many days even getting out of bed is a huge struggle so seeing people living their “normal” lives can be motivating for me. I hadn’t thought about it from the other perspective. I will still see things as encouraging or inspiring but I’ll definitely be more careful about voicing those things as I can now understand how they might feel for the other person.

They are expressing their point of view, which isn’t a representation of all disabled people. Don’t ever let anyone make you feel bad or wrong for expressing yourself or how you feel. Inspiration is subjective, it’s not theirs to say that someone is wrong for being inspired by something. To a depressed person, someone getting out of bed could be inspirational. To someone who suffers from agoraphobia, a person walking out of their house could be inspirational. It’s very personal and makes no sense to me to try to take that away from someone.

you don't need to do anything unless the kid is being aggressive or cruel (not just naive, brash, etc in the sense that they're a kid and don't know any better). the disabled person is used to it and can handle it (if you mean the kid is going up to them). staring is fine for a kid-- they're just looking! if they're asking YOU questions, just answer them! it's totally normal to be curious; I'm curious when I see people with disabilities I've never seen before and I'm disabled myself!

Their mom or caregiver came up to me and yelled at me in front of everyone which was of course embarassing. I wasn't trying to be rude, I was just curious. I wanted to tell her that but I didn't know how to stick up for myself and convey my curiosity to an adult at that age.

Children are naturally inquisitive. Looking is ok. I've worked with many disabled that were extremely disfigured and it was quite normal for people to look. Adults and children. It's only a problem when people openly stare and or are rude. I've had to deal with that. I had two guys behind me in a queue saying, look at that person over there, they look like the elephant Man. I turned round and politely said, actually that is a beautiful lady and she has more love and compassion in her little finger than you do in your entire body. I was very upset inside but I had to deal with it in a way to make them think. He walked out after apologizing and left his friend behind. They were in there 20's. Should have known better. Still we all have to learn. Just some learn early on. We aren't all dressed in the same clothes. We come in many wonderful and beautiful packages. Some like trinkets and bows and some like brown paper. I'm a brown paper and a bit of ribbon. 😂

Yeah, disability inspiration porn makes me SO uncomfortable! It's like saying "Oh, wow. I could never." Which is totally insulting. I have experienced something similar being an adoptive parent. I adopted my son out of foster care when he was 9. Everyone tells me how that is so inspiring and what an angel I am and how they could never etc. etc. It's super uncomfortable for so many reasons. I always answer with something like "No, I'm the lucky one!" or I try to joke about it "Really, I'm just lazy and got him 50% off" (Because he was 9... half of 18.). Also, I don't consider myself a role model parent. I suppose I'd consider myself a good enough parent.. but really, there are so many things I could have done differently/better. Finally, it's frustrating because there are so many kids in foster care who need homes, and it frustrates me that more people don't adopt, and it also makes me feel guilty that I only had 1 kid and probably won't adopt another because parenting is exhausting and a lot harder than I thought (Just dropped him off at college a few weeks ago, and he's doing amazing, of course, 'cause he's a really awesome human being. No idea if he'll do his homework or whatever, but he's happy and enthusiastic, and I'm totally loving watching him turn into an incredible young man).

The thing that I hate about the whole inspiration porn thing is when people act like it's so great and it's such a big deal when a non disabled person makes friends with or reaches out to a disabled person - So it's so special or they're a hero or something. This is especially common with autistic kids. There was an autistic kid who went on, I think, the Kathy Lee Gifford show because one of his classmates sat with him at lunch. Him and the classmate were on there and they were making such a big deal about it and treating the neurotypical kid like he's a hero. They even had a woman sing this terrible song about friendship and reaching out. It was so embarrassing for the autistic kid. They talked about it on the Howard Stern show and Howard was saying how what the neurotypical kid did, shouldn't be seen as a big deal and how they should've never put them on TV. I totally agree with him. Look up "Howard Stern autistic kid embarrassed on TV," to find what I'm talking about.

My favorite thing about Shane is when Hannah says something and he laugh smiles as if to say "Lol what are you crazy?" example: 18:51 My favorite thing about Hannah is when Shane makes up a story and Hannah just says "Nope..." Lol I love you guys!

Love your monday grub bags... keep it coming. I would like to see a real demonstration of how Shane writes and cruises the internet given the lilmitations of his hands. I assume it is speech to text - but can you show?
@claireashley427
@claireashley427 2 года назад
He said in a very recent video actually that he does not use speech to text as it often doesn't understand him and it's quicker to type. He uses his thumbs to type on a keyboard or keypad on his phone that is linked to his computer (so he is able to type and move the cursor/click with the use of an app on his phone!)😊

Question: What parts of accessibility infrastructure are most often overlooked/neglected but yet have a large impact to those that make use of it? Also, what can the average citizen (i.e. not building owners/architects) do to make spaces more accessible? Recently discovered your channel and love the videos! You two are such genuine and fun people and have another subscriber for life!

This is my first post and I have to say that I do find you both inspiring! Please keep in mind that the very fact that you live your lives not focusing on the challenges but rather accepting life as it is and enjoying every minute is, whether you see it or not, Very inspiring to some others that would have difficulty doing the same. Being an inspiration to someone else is a positive regardless of the reason.

Not exactly a GrubBag question, but are you two considering (manually or community) captioning your videos again? Recently found your channel (and love it!!!) and started by watching your older videos, and those captions were such a help as I'm hard of hearing (the auto-captions do a pretty poor job)

I totally thought Shane's scariest moment was going to be when he fell off of the ramp coming out of Hannah's parent's house. I can see how the story he shared could beat that one tho! Also, Shane, I'm surprised you have never heard to NEVER tell a woman to "calm down"! 😄

I got a suggestion for the next episodes : What if Shane would have to answer Hanna’s questions as if he was her : Doing his best impression and settling in her mind in order to adopt her way of thinking to reply to the questions… And vice versa Hannah would have to respond as she was Shane …

When my nephew was 2 to 3 yrs old he had a fascination was woman's bellies. Actually, it was very sweet but my SIL would be mortified. He would walk up to ladies, raise up their shirt and gently touch there bellies. He would look them straight in the eyes and his face was just totally calm and sweet. He would also want visitors to lay a on the floor on their stomach and he would sit on your lower back and gently rub your back then turn you over and rub your belly. He outgrew it around 4. It was so sweet, odd, but sweet.

Concerning what Shane had to say about people getting inspiration, I think he will get a good laugh out of a meme I saw the other day. The meme had a picture of a guy with prosthetic legs climbing a mountain with a quote that said, "He has prosthetic legs. He is climbing Mt Everest. What's your excuse?" In response to that there was a quote that said, "His legs won't hurt. Mine would." LOL!

Shane please continue to be a back seat driver reminding the driver that your lives matter more than the few minutes you save when you pass another car. Especially when farmers are on the roads with their big honking machinery. Be safe, be blessed!

Monday Grub Bag question: Shane, what are you current favorite beers? My husband and I really like craft beer, but our favorite beers change seasonally.
@missyholz
@missyholz 2 года назад
As far as inspiration, I have something tiring that happens to me too. My husband was struck by lightning; I was dx with MS and our daughter was dx with congenital glaucoma. People that hear that our story will say wow, makes my bad day seem like nothing compared to you. It kind of bothers me. I don’t think they mean to be mean, but I don’t find it helpful for my mental health.

This is why here in America we don't have chains on our doors anymore. Also in hotel and motel rooms they have those handle things made out of I guess its iron or something. But no chain locks anymore. Which is a great thing. I'm wondering how the guys even were able to unlock the door to open your door. I am happy that you were safe and you actually said something.

I had this same experience, Hannah. My cat, Mokie, to gain attention, will jump on the couch and dive bomb the person in the head who is sitting on the couch. He did this to me and I was in the process of trying to swallow chocolate caramels and his bopping me caused me to choke and I couldn't breathe, couldn't talk, drink water. My husband gave me the Heimlich maneuver and of course, that isn't going to do anything with sticky caramel! Finally, like you, I was able to get some air in. Even though Mokie didn't mean to almost kill me, I was shaken and couldn't be around him for awhile. Suffice to say, I noticed looking in the mirror that I had popped a blood vessel in my eye, which happens to people who suffocate, so I was close to losing consciousness. It was mighty scary. We now put Mokie in another room when anyone is eating.. Glad you made it back too!
