My dad bought a hobby farm when I was six and one of the first things my brother and I asked for was a horse. Ol dad bought my brother and I a Shetland pony for 25 dollars that came with a saddle. I'll never forget the first time my dad put the saddle on and show us how to ride. The first thing the pony did was take dad under the clothes line but dad saw that coming and he ducked. My dad rode him a bit more before the pony decided to go charging down a steep hill full bore and then coming to a sudden stop. Dad flew a good twenty feet before rolling another twenty feet through an area he burnt a week before. Dad slowly picked himself off the ground all blackened from head to toe. My brother, mother and I fell to the ground laughing. My brother and I never got much riding time on that pony because he didn't want to be ridden and he knew how to hurt us every which way he could. The last time I rode him he used all his weight to smash my leg into a block retaining wall. My dad eventually sold him to guy that had a team of ponies to pull a wagon.

When I 16 years old my got married and I hated my new stepdad. I gave him Hell every day. Finally one day my mother told me she loved me and asked if she should leave him. At that point I know was the problem and said no. He became my best friend and I loved him. He was married to my mom for 35 years more before she passed away. I named my first son after him.

Dad's horse was patches, remembering playing tag under an around him everyday. Then dad got us a horse from Portland racetrack, which was pregnant. So we got 2 for one. From then on their names were just mommy an baby. Then I got another horse, cricket.

This grandmother seemed to have lost the will to do anything. One just saw her sitting about or making a meal, instead of working somewhere to make the money for that loan. She told her granddaughter that she had no time to care for the horses anymore, but didn't seem to be doing ANYTHING outside her home. And just as well that her granddaughter came to stay and with her resourcefulness and fresh energy saved the ranch. And I thought it was silly and pointless to put the Christmas Market sign in the ground facing up the drive and not towards the entrance. I expect that was just to allow the camera to film it, but not at all realistic.

Sigh. I wish these horse movie writers weren't so lazy. Colic is an emergency! It demands immediate vet care and can be fatal. Just standing in the stall, connecting with the horse does not heal colic. If you did that in real life, the horse would die a very painful death. I'm so disappointed that the writers and director didn't bother to learn about the condition before they added it to this movie. Yeesh! This is a heart warming story suitable for family viewing, but the horse was just set dressing, sadly.
