I was in rehab for three months. Serious spine pain from an operation. They put me on Oxy. I got very addicted. I had no idea what was happening to me. The way House is portraying withdrawal in is accurate. I went through it for two full weeks. Oxy is really nothing but another version of Heroin and just as addictive. In a way I'm glad I went through it is because now I know why they are talking about meaning being addicted to opiates.

How 'are you guys now? Im currently withdrawing how long would you say it takes?

@@RealD8 Depends on the drug. Oxy took me two weeks. Oxy is one of the longest lasting ones to detox from so I hear. I heard of people getting off Heroin in less than a week. I hope you have friends to run to the store for you. You're going to be messed up but it does stop. It might take a month for your sleeping patterns to get back to normal.

@@RealD8 I have been off it for years. I do have health issues that make me think an Oxy would make it more bearable at times. But otherwise I don't think about it. If the only physical problem you have is withdrawal don't get weak, just get through it. Learn healthy living, eating right walking, jogging, and what have you. Never never take a drug off the street to get through it. You never truly know what it is you would be getting. You will never get past the addiction. The suffering is not likely to last more than two weeks. Maybe less than that. Just do it.

In HS i had a piece of a needle break off through my skin and drift around in my knee. My PCP thought it was just a torn something (I felt a sharp pain getting up after kneeling for about an hour) and wanted an MRI. After an x-ray a week later, I'd been without anything but Motrin and was losing my mind. They found it had drifted around my kneecap and was slowly slipping into the nerve cluster behind. If they'd done an MRI the radiologist said, "It may have ripped your kneecap out of place". I've never felt anything so intense in my life, and the two weeks before they removed it felt like a month.

This. I'm dealing with CRPS in my left ankle, which got smashed in an accident. I have a spinal cord stimulator, but the pain specialist was wrong about it helping the pain. It did help my functioning, but being otherwise SOL...House 's writers really DO get it.

Yep i have body pain that im 99% sure comes from cptsd from what my parents have done. It is incorrect to do so, but Cuddy is doing it because House is denying that he is addicted, so this is a challenge to make House admit that he is addicted, whereas House takes the challenge to avoid clinic duty and one up Cuddy.

You don't have enough insight into who house may be to judge whether or not he's addicted mentally. You're splitting hairs. He's clearly physically dependent and that's enough to define an addict in most cases. Withdrawal will sharp turn dependency into addiction. Fear of that pain. That's where I am

Addiction is a chemical change in the brain due to continued substance abuse which is usually characterized as an inability to stop use of drugs even though you know it’s harmful to yourself. Dependence is the physical dependence or need of the substance once the body becomes physically adapted to the presence of the drug. While both can be present independently from one another, usually dependence and addiction run parallel to each other. When it comes to opioid abuse, the natural opioid receptors in the brain gradually become less responsive to the constant onslaught of opioid stimulation. Eventually the receptors require more of the drug to produce the same effects. There’s some excellent articles on addiction vs dependence as well as what exactly happens in the brain at different stages of opioid use. Searching “drug addiction vs dependence” and “how opioids change the brain” results in some great information on the topics. I’m also a recovering opiate addict myself and have plenty of first hand experience regarding the physical/chemical changes in the brain.

I'm going to a specialist about my upset stomach. I can whole heartedly agree that Spondyloarthritis sucks. Just got to stay strong and do whatever treatments you can.

@@katejenkins9925 I'm gonna be fine, my treatment is starting soon :) For me it's eczema in the ears, scalp and beard. Nowhere else for now thankfully. Brace yourself, it's quite a road get diagnosed for Crohn's, let alone getting treatment. Once you end up with a good team of specialist, it becomes so much more easier! I'm astonished at how many young people have the same or a similar condition as us. It's way more widespread than you'd think.

It wasn't just relief from the pain in his leg. If he couldn't handle the pain, he would have had to admit to Cuddy that he was wrong, and was in fact addicted to the Vicodin. He would have had to admit to himself that he was an addict. So he wasn't just relieving the pain in his leg - he was relieving the pain of the death of his own self image. It was a massive, willing self deception.

The smile was from the release of endorphins when the body sustains a new injury. The endorphin is a natural pain reliever that helps relieving the brain from the intense pain so that the body can function under stressful situations.

I understand that it was Wilsons way of getting House to admit he was an addict, but they way they talk about it in this first two minutes makes ZERO sense, even worse when you consider they are both supposed to be very smart Doctors. Yes she does describe what is going to happen to him IF he detoxes, while actually leaving out a few details I'm guessing didn't get past the censors. Here is the problem with this entire premise. The only thing more dangerous going cold turkey on would be actual heroin, oxy or alcohol. It doesn't matter if he wasn't actually an addict, as in he doesn't use it to get high because he's been using the pills at such a high dose for so long the amount it would take to get him high would likely kill at least 3 people. He had 0% chance of not going into detox because it's not like the drugs only gives detox to people who are addicts looking to get high, his body is still going to be physically dependant on it.

He probably only learns enough when his patients speak to know a few things: where they've been and what they've taken. Like how he learned enough Hindi to mess with one guy. Or he learned after he met her. But he's probably fluent in Mandarin since college for credits. Fluency in languages is hard, but House learned how to cook at mastery level to distract from his leg pain when he detoxed and was in therapy v

@@BezddRed who knows but I do know something about pain. if something hurts constantly, a sharp pain in another part of the body, the pain receptors shift focus. I would get horrible long lasting ear pain to the point I would deliberately slam my knee against a door facing so my body would focus on that for awhile and Id get relief from my ear pain.

nerve induced pain like a neck hernia is something you can't shield yourself against, nor can you brace for it or avoid it. It can only be somewhat numbed with painkillers (not available over the counter). It's always there, dull at times, and often sharp and intense, demanding almost all of your attention. Managed to keep working despite all that, with the help of some great people that are my employers.

I wouldn't call everything about it perfection, there are some episodes that are kind of eh, most of season 8 wasn't great, and there are a fair number of things in it that are inaccurate and/ or very problematic. But on the whole it was fantastic, very few shows have manged to hit me in the way that house did. The fact that I've watched the whole thing twice in spite of its length is a testament to that.

insane i got perc 10s when i was just the age to be aware of things but not really i remember taking 2 nd telling my mom i should be prescribed this..HUGE RED FLaG. and id had hydrocodone for broken bones befoe but this was diff..the age..the timing. the drug affects mixed with my social uncomforte..yeh edit: its insane they gave nothing. tooth pain is insane. just funny how that's one of my foundest red flag memories.. and they were necessary..but so was a buncha of other stuff id presume lol..given how things progressed

@@Thebloodbornreaper when I was 30, I took out my 2 wisdom teeth on the right and I have to take out the 2 on the left, as they are also sideways and pushing the other teeth inwards. So a decade (and a half) later, I still haven't made the second appointment. I hate Dentist visits so much...

That’s stupidly cruel. I had an infection in my gums (bc of my wisdom teeth erupting) and I was in such severe pain it was difficult to breathe. I had to wait a weekend before the dentist could do the surgery, and I called the office crying hysterically, asking for just one or two doses of a stronger pain med (they gave me codeine which was not doing a single thing) and they said no. And I told them “Look I know you think I’m a drug seeker, I’m literally asking for TWO doses. Just one dose a day until I can have the surgery!” And they still said no. Once I actually had the surgery, they gave me good drugs, more than I needed actually, and I hoarded them just in case the pain either came back or I injured myself somehow (I’m prone to falls/back pain) but fortunately that didn’t happen. I understand doctors have to protect themselves/their licenses, but I feel like they’ve swung way too far in the other direction, and now people who really need pain meds can’t get access.

Drugs should be legal and we would have less crime that way and less money spent on "policing" and corrupt autorities (cops are half the night mafia - politicians are the bosses). With the money spent we could make programs to actually help addicts, instead of imprisoning them.

Downhomesunset I don't know the name of it but there is one where they implant something on your spinal column that regulates nervous signals. A family friend has it implanted because he had his foot degloved.(That's where your skin gets ripped off completely) he also has a nerve pain issue that causes his to feel the worst pain imaginable in his foot which is slowly spreading across his body. The device helps. Also growth hormone has been found to help regrow damaged nerves. In other cases spinal adjustments can greatly help or remove pain

So, for all of you saying Lauren is an addict… no she is dependent. And so am I. We aren’t trying to get a buzz. We are trying to get out of bed. Some of us are in enough pain that if we didn’t have our meds( I have a transdermal med patch and take oral meds for breakthrough pain) we would kill ourself. Imagine a tooth ache. A bad one . The pain that is so bad you can’t talk. It radiates through your jaw, skull and neck. Now that pain every day. All no matter what. I promise we have tried and are probably doing, physical therapy, chiropractic care, hot pads, warm baths, meditation, deep breathing, mindfulness, heat therapy, ice therapy, hypnosis energy therapy you name it we have done it. The nerve stimulator that helps block pain doesn’t work if you have more than one spot where there is pain. We don’t like the exhaustion, nausea, dry mouth, urine issues, chronic constipation, memory loss ect that come with using pain meds for a long period of time. Every time we go to the doctor (every 3 months in the US) we have a mandatory drug test. If we are seeing a pain specialist, we are probably seeing a therapist both a mental and physical. All of this stuff so we can drink water and keep it down, cuddle with our kids, go to work, drive a car (no, Its not against the law so don’t come at me) , take a shower get dressed, tie our own shoes, make dinner, make love and for some of us, get up and use a toilet on our own. Chronic pain robs us of everything down to our dignity. Are there some people that become addicted to the high one feels when talking the medication? Of course. But the majority of us if you look us up n line, have been on a stable regimen for several years (10 years for me) , have the same doc on every prescription, and haven’t had any issues. So, back off.

I dont want to speak for anyone on here, but house is clearly addict if you watch the show. He's addicted to the pills both mentally and physically, and is in major denial like a lot of addicts are. We see him display addict behavior a lot, and as the show progresses his consumption of the pills does as well as what he will do for them. He illegally forges a prescription and steals to get more pills. He hallucinates from pills, as well as having a problem with alcohol. Anyone who watches that show should see that is not just physical, by the end its far more mental than physical and he's out of control. I understand that some people suffering need pail pills more than others, but they can still turn your behavior into an addict, now that doesn't happen to everyone at all. Some people are just dependent on them, and it doesn't cause any issues in their lives. Clearly that was from house's situation. He enjoyed the euphoria and would do anything to get more as shown on the show.

@trapd00rspider They never discussed tolerance or, in my opinion, the fact that Vicodin has tylenol in it. Very bad for the liver and kidneys. He really should have been on oxycodone.

@@downhomesunset Oxycodone is something someone with MS or someone with cancer needs, not for neuropathy in your leg. Oxycodone would produce more of a high than hydrocodone would, and it would be even worse to be addicted to or detox from. I think he knows how strong oxycodone is so that is why he sticks to vicodin, the chances of becoming an addict on accident or on purpose are much higher and the effects would be much stronger. No doctor treating patients should be taking oxycodone multiple times a day. I think they'd need to sit that one out, coach. Yes, I know about hydromorphone and morphine, but hydromorphone makes even terminally ill cancer patients in their last stages loopy when taken as directed. Morphine has an adverse effect on a lot of people and makes them delusional and have hallucinations.

managing chronic pain with opiates is controversial and quite the hot topic in medical circles and is a huge moral dilemma of our time. so being a drama show of course they would portray the doctor afflicted with something so current and controversial to spur the conversation and be relevant. its honestly a freaking genius idea that gets people interested and engaged with the show.

He's a build on Sherlock. That means opioid _over_ use despite intellect because stubborn and depression.

Most likely he got hooked on them quite quickly early on before trying any alternatives, then it was just easier to use his position to stay on the opiates instead of switching to something else and going through the miserable withdrawal and addiction side effects.

He said before he always checks his eyes for jaundice in case the vicodin shuts down his liver.

I have chronic pain (CFS, possible fibro), and lately in my joints it's worsened to the point that some days just standing up is excruciating at first. I can't walk right because it hurts so much. Just had my gallbladder out and the thing I noticed most about coming off the Percocet was that my hips and back and other things started screaming at me again. Made me wish I could keep taking them. I hate the fuzzy feeling but man, to walk upright without a limp, without pain... Yup.

back then there was no good way to detox off medical heroin now days we have this star trek tech called a bridge device it interferes with the receptors in the brain making you not even addicted anymore you are addicted but suffer 0 of the withdrawal effects its a major game changer for people suffering from opiod addiction.

I disagree that he would have chosen reducing though because I feel the show makes it pretty definitive that House is an addict. The question of preference between reducing and cold turkey is a non-starter; he does not want to stop taking the pills. When House does finally admit he needs help he's strapped to a bed to ride out the withdrawals

Have to say those some sequences of the show are painful none ever felt really stupid or pointless. The writers paid for everything with good writing and I enjoyed the ending of the show. It was satisfying and felt right.

You are wildly inaccurate and this is dangerous misinformation. The vast majority of long-term pain patients (provided they are on opioid pain medication) would quickly go into withdrawal if they stopped taking their pain meds cold turkey like that. Severity of withdrawal would depend on their dose and how long they've been on it, but even relatively low doses still cause physical dependency. Anyone who's taken even a mid-level psychopharmacology class could tell you that. Your comment is obviously coming from someone with no accurate medical knowledge and who has never been through that kind of thing in their life. Given your comment is 8 months old right now I'd leave it alone except for the fact that it's propagating harmful misinformation.

@@austinp8172 I wouldn't define taking an MD's instruction as potentially harmful information(though, I guess malpractice happens), nor praising good writing in a television show, nor would I believe a hypothetical ideal to be a frequent occasion. Lemme explain it differently for you, if you are compensating for a stimulus, and remove both the mechanism of compensation, and the stimulus at once, equilibrium is maintained. From what I've studied, opioids obviously have high rates of addiction and dependency, the reality of it is patients aren't perfect, and can easily obtain larger-than-necessary dosages, Doctors are humans too, and may over-prescribe. Chronic pain rarely vanishes altogether with a snap of the fingers, maybe infrequently with some surgical intervention following recovery. Endorphins exist for a purpose, they allow your body to adapt to stress, and provide feedback on your physical well being, this is why paper cuts are a minor pain, and a limb being severed is overwhelming. This is why I liked the portrayal of the self harm scene.

@@kireibee4901 Unfortunately that's not how the human body works. Equilibrium is not maintained even if you remove both the pain and the pain medication at the same time. The reason for that, and why most of what you're saying here is incorrect, is the build up of tolerance. The longer you take opioid pain medication, the more resistant to it your body becomes, this happens through specific mechanics involving neurotransmitter receptors; I could get more in depth if you're interested. The longer a patient has been taking pain medication, the amount of medication they require generally goes up while their pain levels usually remains constant. You're really very incorrect in claiming that an "equilibrium" exists because the, using your terms, mechanism of compensation itself causes physical and chemical changes in your brain. Removing this suddenly, even if you remove the stimulus (the underlying pain being treated) with it, causes massive problems, AKA withdrawal.

@@austinp8172 Opioids are similar enough to the body's own pain relief chemicals, causing a negative feedback on the production of those chemicals. If you've been taking opioids long enough, the body won't be responding in a significant matter at all, because of the constant negative feedback that was provided. It might come back or it might have killed the natural response alltogether. Knew someone like that, if you bump into something, it aches a bit for a short time and you forget about it, as your body dealt with it already with the endorfins etc. However with that person it could persist far far longer, the pain from a simple bump against something that wouldn't even leave a bruise.

So many people have got addicted by taking doctors advice in fact 75% of all opiate addicts in the past 2decades started on prescription pain medication.

Then wait a year or two, and watch it again. That's what I do with the shows, and even RU-vid series I watch. Like PewDiePie's Five Nights at Freddy's series I watched when I was fourteen, or Markiplier's Getting Over it I watched when I was 17 and addicted to Adderall. Or Rick and Morty Season 1-3 I watched when I was 19, also addicted to Adderall. You don't want to rewatch them TOO often or you'll memorize them. So wait as long as possible and watch them again when you've forgotten enough of it. And make sure to be an alcoholic so you can impair your memory to the fullest extent when you turn 21. It'll never be as good as when you first watched it, but it is like you said, an element of nostalgia.

Everything good must come to an end, cherish the last two seasons even if you think they might be a bit slower than the others. I watched this show years ago and to this day I have yet to watch a show with so much interest and so much investment in the characters

I am playing around a bit... but give it some thought. He is physically dependent on hydrocodone and psychologically dependent on acetaminophen

@@universalrandomizer405 Both, if you watch the show you see many times he is severely hooked on opiates both mentally and physically. He likes to tell himself he's not mentally hooked on them, but he's in a denial and is clearly a very severe addict. We see him forge prescriptions, steal, and do many things that are classic addict behavior. Obviously he needs it for pain too, but it gets to the point where he becomes so addicted mentally it becomes just as much if not more of a mental addiction than a physical. Studies also show long term opiate use in some cases increase pain. People usually report a decrease in symptoms of pain after detoxing. House was probably in too much pain for that though. House was very far gone, he was all addicted to alcohol. We see his drinking problems in episodes too.
