Well done Krypto on bringing up Kafka’s tuberculosis. I think he may have even have reached a point where the process of eating any food become incredibly painful for him. Kafka’s fiction is so dark and horrifying at times that his Letters to Milena almost come as a relief. “In the Penal Colony” works well as a companion to Kafka’s question around “perfect” artistry and the union of artist and art it may entail. The Letters to Milena are something else. They give so much insight on who he really was, and what was going on emotionally with his distance toward relationships in general. Those letters read as if someone else, altogether, wrote them.

Today is Kafka's Birthday, and I just finished a book of his short stories. This story was interesting to me,but as most of his stories...sad. My take away from this story was that you're only as good for as long as "The People" deem your artistry as new and exciting. People become bored quickly,and are quick to move on to the next "Fad",as we so often see these days on "Social Media". Happy Birthday Franz...🎂

I'm doing a paper on hunger artist and I've read few journal articles and interpretation videos, but this one completely blew my mind. It was so insightful and it resonates with my interpretation... Thank you.

Social media culture is a great comparison with the hunger artist in Kafka's story. I think I included this quotation from Cynthia Ozick on Pae's Kafka video, too, but she wrote "As the ironist Kafka knew, the hunger artist in pursuit of less does not really practice a superior art." That blew my mind when I read it, but it makes so much sense (and again, definitely tracks with your social media comparison). Really enjoyed your discussion of this story! 🙂

The moment I heard you two were going to cover this, I have been looking forward to it. In my opinion, Kafka captures the human condition better than any other fiction author I have read. I am glad you found the comedy in this. Kafka was a comedian, at the end of the day. By showing the absurdities of life, at the core, is kind of funny. Life is over the top, in a way that cannot be explained. It is funny, but not at all. A very Hegelian negation. Ahhh! That bread crumb, I have been following for a while--it gets dangerous. Kafka, being Jewish, was most likely referring to the 40 days and nights Moses was communicating with G-d on Mt. Sinai. Moses went up the mountain, twice, as the first time he came down the Jewish people were worshipping the Golden Calf. This idol worship was more of a psychological pacifier, not a true belief, as the Jewish people had miscounted, such that when Moses didn't come down precisely at the time expected, the people were distraught. There is a lot more to 40 then meets the eye...

This story and the film "The Wrestler" starring Mickey Rourke have so many parallels. I give this one an 8/10 too.

Interesting discussion. Kafka was starving himself when he wrote A Hunger Artist because he was suffering from Consumption and swallowing was so painful, his death has been attributed to starvation. This was one of his last stories, he was editing it just before he died in Vienna. In Prague they make a big deal of Kafka because that is where he was from. In Vienna, they would rather you didn't mention Kafka as there is still a strong anti-Semitic element there. Kafka may have intended the humor you found in A Hunger Artist, he had a dark sense of humor, when he read The Metamorphosis to his friends he would often be in fits of laughter. K is for Kafka, I'm trying to think up a Kafka prompt for the K Tag. 📚

Hey I love you guys vids. Haven't listened in a bit but saw this while looking up Kafka. One question I have is do you guys ever analyze Cormac McCarthy or Herman Melville? Moby Dick is my fav novel of all time so I would like to hear y'all's take. Thanks for the info. Hope you take up my suggestions. Thanks. We haven’t done a novel by them yet. I’ve been interested in MD for quite some time and McCarthy has always been highly recommended as a fan of Faulkner. As for other social medias we have a Twitter or X or whatever it’s called now and Instagram but we’re not really heavy users of those. More like they’re available for communication if someone needs it
