Such a shame that ottomans destroyed masterpieces inside that church, it infuriates me and im not even Orthodox or Greek. It's not just religion, it's an important part of human history that was destroyed. Thessaloniki and Edessa have some of the most beautiful churches i've ever seen. The waterfalls and cave you've seen are so beautiful. Both cities are definitely worth to visit. Thanks for the video.

If the ottomans pissed you off this much curious how you feel about the crusaders sacking many. Many Greek churches including sacking of Constantinople. They destroyed relics and a lot of history throughout the region. Or how about the Roman’s and what they did to history. 🤔

@@Tosunce Ottomans came to our land, occupied, enslaved us and destroyed our places of worship like this church and you are here wondering why we may have shown the same level of respect when they finally left? But ok let's say it was wrong, you shouldn't have done that and we shouldn't done that either. It was in the past and mistakes were made, but riddle me this why in the year 2024 Turkiye decided that a world heritage monument like a byzantine monastery should be turned into a mosque?

There was a time in the Orthodox Church where iconoclasm was embraced and was later refuted. Iconoclasm refers to the belief that it's important to destroy icons or images, usually for religious or political reasons. The term originated from the Byzantine Empire, where there was a conflict between those who supported religious icons and those who opposed them. So, it's equally possible that iconoclasts within the church itself damaged those.

A monastery more ancient than the Turkish presence in Anatolia! The current Islamofascist regime in Turkey, turned a UNESCO world heritage site into a mosque!

Edessa is called the city of waters for obvious reasons and is one of the most beautiful cities of Macedonia region of north Greece.Sooo much of history from the Macedonian dynasty. You recorded for us to little of those beautiful waterfalls😢 Another beautiful city is the one of Kastoria.A city builded around a lake and since you are on your way to go there i cant hardly wait.I like to travelling to those cities during winter season because with christmas decoration and the swow is like a magic fairytale...

Happy to see you are going to show a little glimpse of the 80% mountains of Greece in following videos as I saw the Aoos gorge in your intro:) Also. The place Dispilio at tge lake of Kastoria in this video are much more important. Much more important For 2 reasons: 1. They found the Dispilio tablet here which is the oldest linear writing found on earth dated to 7300 years ago. Its predating ealiest Egyptian proto hyroglyphics and ealiest proto Cuneiform by over 2000 years. 2. And secondly. They found obsidian in this place from the period of 9000-7000years. And obsidiannis ONLY found in Milos island, 600km south in the middle of the Aegean. What this means is that 8000 years ago the peoples of Greece had extendsive trade that connected the people around the mainland and islands. So its 2 very importany things about then place Dispilio

Thank you for showing beautiful Edessa😍I was there in a road trip in 2017, what a nice city, I didn't even know about that gorgeous old church! The nature in Northern Greece is VAST as you can see from your road trip so far. The reason there's so few towns is because the population density in western Macedonia and Epirus is one of the lowest in Europe😆Since you're heading westwards I highly recommend the Dragon Lakes; Tymfi, but especially Smolikas. It is for the adventurous but your mind will be blown. There's many beautiful cities and towns all across Macedonia, Epirus, and even heading south towards Sterea Ellada, look up the city of Messologi, it has a very long (and very tragic) history 😢

The wall iconography in the second church is definitely new (i.e. probably 20th century). The temple looks glorious so it must be quite old. Good iconography today is next to impossible to find: it is all quite stylised and is mostly based on quick reproduction techniques, not original artwork. Old iconography, by contrast, has a living, eerie and very ethereal quality: its very purpose is to portray the world beyond the physical, ephemeral one.

The waterfall is not the only one located within urban area in Europe. There is another one in a small town of Jajce in Bosnia.

Back in 1990 the roads up north were in terrible condition, as in the whole country. The main pass from east to west up north was the Katara pass. The buses would go through this. So if I remember well the KTEL bus from Thessaloniki to Ioannina and subsequently to Igoumenitsa would go through Larissa, Trikala, Kalambaka and Metsovo. That means not through West Macedonia, but through Thessaly and then Epirus. There were minor roads from West Macedonia to Epirus but in very bad condition and we were passing through mountainous spaces with very few villages. I drove in the summer of 1993 from Zagori, north of Ioannina, to Kastoria and it took me more than four hours.

Hello Gabriel, you should go to Little Papingo village in Epirus, the route from Kozani Prefecture (not via Egnatia road) is amazing!!!

Gabe - Your video from yesterday seems to have removed from your site; am I mistaken? Thanks.

It is not true that the only waterfall is in the urban part of the city... In Bosnia, you have a large waterfall in the town of Jajce in the urban part of the city, the strict center....Jajce,Bosnia.
