Since ancient times in Japan, there has been a custom to purify sacred places by laying small stones. It is also said that the jangling sound made when walking on gravel keeps evil spirits at bay. Another architectural twist is that sunlight bouncing off the gravel softens the surrounding area and wraps it in light, which then penetrates into the interior of the shrine building, making it easier to see.

Kyoto, which flourished as the capital of Japan for 1000 years, has a different history. Kyoto does not impose building height restrictions or grant permission for unusual constructions so as not to disrupt the cityscape. In the basin, summers are howling hot and winters are bitterly cold. In summer in Kyoto, it is standard to cool off on the riverbed.

@@jadeandjason. I hear that many of the songs created by composers who don't know much about Japanese culture with an appropriate image are irrelevant. Even with the theme of Japanese temples, I don't think I can really trust songs made by non-Japanese.
So are you telling me all the Japanese girls that wear the shortest skirts I have ever seen have no morals? I saw people all over Japan including Japanese people wearing what they want so I assumed it was an old fashion thing and wouldn't apply to cities. It's rude of you to say I have no morals when it's just a cultural difference that's not even followed through by all the Japanese people. And from what I can tell Japanese people are kind and not judgmental or am I wrong?
